Run in?? If I ever got stopped by one of these wanna be cops, I would just keep on going. They cant do anything to anyone. They are security guards, plain and simple. No gun, no authority. thats how it works dude. Not that I disrespect them, but I dont shy away like a I from a real cop. I ripped out in front of an public safety guy once and he did nothing, just looked at me.

If I ever attempted to pull you over, feel free to run, the end result would be the same as if you ran from scpd, ncpd, suffolk park pd etc... I'd get on the air and request an assist from suffolk, with whom we have a good working relationship. As for bng a wannabe, I have my job and I do my job, I don't try to be a suffolk cop, I my job of Park Ranger. You "ripped out" ifo an guy, thats great, what did you accomplish??? As for the gun thing, I'm not going to debate it with you, it is what it is, the towns send us out for our yearly requals, sign our c forms but in the end make you leave it in your locker. Not our decisions, yet I still go out and do my job, not try and do someone elses.

you wish you could be SCPD but could not make it, so you get this do nothing job where you dress up like a cop, but the towns know enough not to trust you dummies with a real gun. How sad. If you wanted to be a real cop, why not get on the airport police or harbor police. They are REAL cops who carry real guns

Regardless of what some people on this board think of the Park Rangers, the bottom line is this... If you took the test and get called by one of the two toms that have full time rangers (Smithtown, ) its not a bad place to start your career in law enforcement. You will be able to learn to deal with people, and get a general understanding of the law, encon law, vtl and the town codes. More importantly, the way things are with todays economy and job market you will have that steady pay check, health benefits, and a retirement, which a lot of people would really like to have right now.

These jobs are not without there down sides, but they are what you make of them, take the good and the bad and just keep taking tests till you get on somewhere else, and know that if all else fails you have that pension at the end of it all.

Don't even bother taking the Park Ranger test, just take the Deputy Sheriff test, this way when the Park Police come over and merge with the Sheriff's Office you'll at l already be there!

top pay for Smithtown is about $80k but they don't carry. They have to qualify yearly. They do V&T's and summary arrests. As peace officers they cannot execute warrants. There Geographic Area of Employment is Town Parks, Beaches, and municipal property/buildings.

Do Rangers have pay parity with Smithtown ?

Is your union ( or Smithtown) of any help in going the way of Brookhaven with armed rangers?

Park Rangers are Peace Officers and thr arrests are not civilian arrests. They use a generic PID when making arests. Contrary to what the other guy posted they can issue UTT's/TSLED's for traffic infractions. The make DWI and BWI arrests as well as drug possession arrests.

Peace officers are cover under Article 2 - (2.10 - 2.30) PEACE OFFICERS of the Criminal Procedure Law. Check out the state website http://public.leginfo.state.ny.us/menugetf.cgi

It is a good entry level law enforcement job until you gert on another job or if you stay it aint a bad job. My FOP lodge has a few park rangers in it. Here is the website: http://fop_lodge53.tripod.com

They are good workers and perform jobs that frankly the County PD shouldn't be doing for the town. You'll notice that Smithtown doesn't have any bad areas like nghboring Brookhaven. Thr presence allows the PD to focus on street crime and patrolling the community, instead of the town parks where most of the skells hang out.

Question ??? - Why does the county police make park rangers and other paid full time peace officers use the generic pid and they give Suffolk SPCA officers (volunteers) a personal pid number and the ability to call HQ for warrant checks.

The rangers can run data through HQ, as far as the PID I don't have that answer, but since when is the spca running and collaring for warrants as peace officers, unlesss that warrant is specifically issued to the spca?

LOL And they will be the first to complain!

Most of the time it's not even them that drives the vehicles, it's the security guards from the Public Safety Department! I hardly ever see a real RANGER driving one of the trucks.

Why the unarmed and untrained security guards are given vehicles to drive that say "Park Ranger" "Law Enforcement" is beyond me and beyond belief! Isn't it the same as giving a civilian a that works for the Suffolk PD a squad car to drive?

Whoever runs the department must be a clown, and they even advertise on craigslist for people to work there! Wow! What's next, canvassing homeless shelters? My guess is that they cannot get enough decent people because they apparently don't pay well, and anyone well qualified won't do that underpaid job unless they are truly community minded.

Ha haaa, don't know about that but saw one arresting a drunk and disorderly guy at Tanner Park with the Suffolk cops a few weeks ago. Same guy was giving out a ticket in front of my house for somebody speeding down the block. To me, the damage seems to be done by kids who graffiti everything and tear things up.

Wow, I haven't been on this site in over 5 years, and it's still them same crap. I'm a cop, you're not. I can do this, you can't do that.. Now we're discussing PID Numbers in a forum? Get a life. All of you. You have to realize by now, that most of the posts in these childish forums are by kids and young rookie cops who are out to prove that they are somebody in law enforcement. Real cops, no matter what title (peace officer or police officer) do not troll forums and discuss PID numbers. However, since the question was posed; PID numbers are Police ID Numbers, issued by Suffolk County PD, to thr officers to identify who an arresting officer is. They issue a generic PID of 59999 to outside agencies under the alias "Timothy Wilson". Now, does that help whoever decided to go to a public, anonymous forum to air out police business? Who cares which rangers carry firearms and which do not? This forum has become a dick measuring outlet since the day it was formed. Stop the public bickering amongst yourselves, it really makes all of us look bad.
