No, the drill teams are killing racing. The cost to maintain, fuel, and run thos 60,000.00 rigs is outrageous. The sport is DEAD, the stands used to be packed, now its only members of the team and family members watching. Time to hang it up boys.

Okay agreed. Now stop demanding chrome wheels and $400K + pumpers with custom cabinetry and "whizbang" crap you will never use and demand replacement in ten instead of twenty years. Stop going to all the "buff" shows and "training" events all over the state, stop going from turnout gear, to the next level turnout gear, to the next level in five years. Stop asking for all the radios, with multi channels half the time outdated by the time you get them. Stop asking for the computers you never use after the first month, the renovations, construction to the firehouses, the insurance ad ons, the added insurance from AFLAC, the softball uniforms and equipment, everybody has to have a SUV otherwise rescue can't do it's job and the Fire Police can't use just any pickup. Buy all the drugs and the insurance but nobody can keep track of the expiration date let alone muster up when needed. Nobody told us you were hiring paid people to do our jobs? New flashlights, ranger boots no good anymore, give us all leather and LEDS. Gloves not good enough, get new ones, I never go to parades but I need a badge, a uniform, and now a new one, it does not fit, buy me dress shoes, my pager does not work, I want more radios, my car has the wrong lettering, the AC isn't strong enough, I want the hall fixed up for my kid's christening, buy new software this one does not work. The best is, "I need hose, but it has to be colored and I have needed it for months now but just found out." And they get pissed when the question was asked "Last working fire when you needed it or was that the last time you checked your rig with the company and emptied the bed?".
Long Island Vollies are probably the best trained and certainly the best equipped in the Nation and you all still bitch.

Racing is just one component of the system of Me, Me Me Me.. Stop bashing each other and look in the mirror...

And that's coming from up the ranks the old way and finally seeing it from the other side. You are all spoiled and it's time for some tough love.

lets cut the bullshit plain and simple. When race season starts, all else is put on hold. THe world revolves around you and your croonies. If the taxpayers could only see all those 12 ounch training seasons, the trip to Deerfield, the steaks, hamburgers, and all those little incidents that are sooooooo well handled. Did n't one team get booted from a hotel upstate, and maybe they could explain for what?

Cut the bullshit, newbiew are recruited to race, and if those "drill team captains" though of firematics, they would make these yokels attend the training drills.

Oh, sorry, forgot, you had to work again

You my friend are 100% correct, however fire/ems comes 1st not drill team. time to start at the drill teams then work from there.

If fire/ems really comes first, it is time to start there and the the drill team, softball, hall use, lounge, flat screens will go away or be merged in as inexpensively as possible if at all. You certainly can't say that a $60K expenditure as someone quoted for a race team compares to a $450K over budget ALS program that does not reach it's attendance or manning goals or an engine that could have been had for $250K on an economical commercial or low end custom chassis that balloons to $400K? It's what percentage of a multi million dollar budget when you put all the numbers together?

Again, look in the mirror, you have in every department power groups that push and get what they want eventually. And the ems groups push and get stupid crap, just like the engine/hose companies, the ladder companies, the retired groups, the sports groups and the racing teams. Some actually succeed in their missions and do well, Kudos to them. Some fail miserably and waste the same if not significantly more tax dollars in the name of "public saftey" or "we save lives". It's how you look at it, some may bring a wood award home, hopefully some will save a home or the owner's life. That's the purpose in the end.
All should stop trying to deflect any constructive critisim regarding personal goals.

I'm telling you it is crap from all sides, believe me. During my tenure, honestly, can say I have diplomatically made new arrangements and smoothed local feathers for racing teams that had incidents as well as those attending FIREMATIC AND EMS conferences, so don't go there. Don't be like Newsday and just go for the dirt your looking for. Each group in these firehouses is a PAC, they learned it from our govermental system. No sooner the racing team left my office, rescue was in there pusing, then the softball team, after them the the new truck committee.

Please.. Again, look in the mirror, all of you...

Are you paying for it? NO - are you paying for your booze? NO - are you paying for the fuel it takes your van or pick up to bring you up there? NO - are you paying for the hundreds of hotdogs, hamburgers, steak, chicken, and the rest of you feast? NO. However, you get credit for calls you miss while your there which is totally unjustified because you propbably wouldnt be there anyway, and how about all the underage drinking that goes along with it? Just wait its all going to come to a screeching halt very soon.

You found a new brake guy? Is he good? What's his name? We'll trade him some old hot dogs and gas from our van for a $25K set of awesome brakes?

What a dolt!

Guys for whatever reasons the vollie departments drop motorized racing programs, it has to be dropped. We all know the costs asscoaited with it and this year with fuel pricing rising every day it's gonna be mad crazy. It's in the best interest of the departments and the taxpayers that we put an end to it voluntarily. Hey if we don't then the taxpayers and the towns and counties around NY will do it for us.

We're supposed to be volunteers, we can no longer hold onto racing teams as an R&R tool. Run old fashion, just as much competition and a fraction of the costs.

Bottom line is all the bad stuff that appears about us isn't all true, we know that. But the fact is there are a lot of things that need to be done better, smarter and cheaper.

Look I'm not talking down to anyone, but remember when we were kids and our parents would tell us to clean our rooms or they'd clean them for us. Well fellow FF's we're being told that now, but many of us don't hear it.

If we don't bring about change and clean things up the state and counties will step in and clean things up for us. Unfortunately the botom line is ultimately they'll screw it up also and it will cost a fortune in taxes, but if we don't make a real effort to reform and progress the volunteer service will soon be a thing of the past.

Not puttin down the motorized teams here, just stating the obvious.

Good thoughts

Think of this:
Fuel is probably the lowest cost of the entire enterprise. Maybe two drums of racing fuel that have been overpriced for years, and diesel for the haulers and other vehicles. I'll be kind and say $3K for the season. So don't use that as one of the planks for your grandstand.

Yes we should clean up our rooms, however I would say at least over half the active racing departments fared quite well with the recent Snoozeday spectacular.

Will local and State Govenment clean it up for us? Yea, right. Let's see, are there State Troopers patrolling 495? Did the State Legislature enforce any of the rules on Fire Districts and Companies that they wrote into law? Did any of the audits proove any misdeeds that snoozeday said happened? (Besides those couple of groups that evidently rode on the little bus to school and now grab headlines.) How about the foundation that is building a museum to honor and educate generations about a former President? Oh the fireman's field now has to be relocated or it's a deal braker under the current design? How come snoozeday is not all huffing a puffing about this, actually supporting the supervisor in editorials to FIND A NEW LOCATION for the track? I say Kudos to the residents and the supervisor that all feel that it is part of Long Island and can't be wiped away..
It will be here as long as it can and survive as many challenges as long as there are youngsters that want to team up, learn the trade and become so close they are an asset..
As to Old Fashioned, excellant sport, also part of the history, alot of departments run it, more people involved, heck the kids run it, don't tell me it's cheaper. The insurance bill is the same if you are in a mutual insurance throughout the State, weather you run it or not.
Either way, the practice is not going away anytime soon.
Sorry to give you the bad news.
