Congressional Caucus on
India & Indian-Americans

Representative Joseph Crowley (D-NY) and Representative Joe Wilson (R-SC) were on January 8, 2003 unanimously elected Co-Chairmen of the Congressional Caucus on India and Indian Americans in the 108th Congress.

The objective of the Congressional Caucus on India & Indian-Americans is to push the Indian-American community's agenda on the Hill.

Expressing happiness at his election, Representative Crowley said: "The United States and India have convergent economic interests. Recently,
American companies have shown greater interest in India. There is great
potential in U.S.-India trade. India is one of the fastest growing emerging
markets in the world, one that presents opportunities for the export of U.S.
goods and services, especially in the infrastructure field. Numerous
American companies play an important role in India's booming high technology sector.

"The U.S. and India have cooperated in fighting terrorist threats to both
countries. The common bond of democracy and the rule of law have enhanced this cooperation. India is a strategically important country, and a force of stability in South Asia."

Equally happy, Representative Wilson added: "India is the world's largest democracy and is rapidly becoming a reliable American ally in South Asia. The U.S. and India formed a Counter-terrorism Joint Working Group in November 1999, and members of both governments are working together to coordinate counter-terrorism strategies. India's armed forces are the world's third largest, and both the American and Indian military have begun a strategic partnership. Last year, the American and Indian Navies conducted joint military exercises in the Indian ocean, the special forces of both armies conducted military exercises in Alaska, and Paratroopers from the American and Indian Armies conducted exercises in India.

"My appreciation for the people of India began when my father spent time
there as a member of the Flying Tigers during World War II, where he gained a great admiration for the people and thr culture. As a Colonel in the Army National Guard and member of the House Armed Services Committee, I want to see the U.S. develop a deeper military relationship with the people of India, as they are a crucial ally in the War on Terrorism."

The unanimous election of Congressmen Crowley and Wilson as Co-Chairs of the bipartisan Congressional Caucus on India is excellent news for the Indian American community. Both the lawmakers are natural leaders and the community expects a lot from thr dynamic leadership.

The Caucus was founded in 1993 by Frank Pallone (D-NJ) and Bill McCollum (R-FL), who served as a Cochairmen until October 1998. They were succeeded by Gary Ackerman (D-NY) and James Greenwood (R-PA).

In a press release dated October 9, 1998, Gary Ackerman, the then Democrat Co-Chairman, said he wanted to expand the Caucus further and to establish a series of task forces which would allow the members who have been active on issues of importance to the Indian-American community to assume visible leadership roles in the Caucus. He added, "I envision we will have task forces devoted to immigration, international trade, U.S. economic sanctions on India, international terrorism and other issues of concern to the Indian-American community and of importance to India-U.S. relations."

In the 107th Congress, the Co-Chairmen were Rep. McDermott and Rep. Royce.

Not too long after 9/11, Gary Ackermann went begging for federal money for NYC. I saw this begging on the TV. In arguing hiis case for more federal money for NYC Ackermann said:" there are more muslim arabs in brooklyn than there are medina". I guess the point he was trying to make was that diversity is great, NYC is diverse. so give NYC more money. He actually said this with a straight face. Here is what I think is obvious: if America had a national origins immigration policy in place since 1965 that excluded muslim imimigrants, it would have been impossible for 9/11 to happen. How could i?. There wouldn't exist a large legal immigrant muslim community in America with the financial resources to buy republican and democratic politicians who refuse to enforce our imigration laws. Here is something you will found chilling. On the Lou Dobbs show recently, a multimillionare Indian immigrant-legal immigrant- was on to discuss the H1B visa program. This very wealthy legal immigrant made a very serious threat to every native born white victim of the crimminal H1B visa program. The legal immgrant from India said that there will be very serious consequences if native born white victims of the H1b visa program are successfull in terminating the H!B visa program. These are the blessings of diversity. Thanks Peter King and Gary Ackermannn. you both are doing an excellent job representing the interest of India. Time is running out for America. Instead of wasting your lives consumming sports entertainment, save America, become an immgration reform activist. It's only a matter of time before a legal muslim immgrant from the middle detonates one of those missing russian mininukes in the lincoln tunnel during rush hour. The Titanic and the United States

Much like the Titanic that sank on April 15, 1912, the Unites States stands at a critical juncture in the history of our nation. Few realize it, but, like the Titanic, this nation smashed into a piece of legislation in 1965 that was never asked for or approved by the American public.

In 1965, our 'Captain' Lyndon B. Johnson along with helmsman Senator Teddy Kennedy drove America into an 'iceberg' of massive, unrestricted immigration that opened up the flood gates with the 'Immigration Reform Act'. At first, the flow of one million immigrants annually wasn't noticed. We were benevolent. Our country was big. There was plenty of room and resources.

However, the massive flow of humanity from that hit is still pouring into our country 38 years later and few seem to notice--much like the party-goers and dancing on the Titanic that kept up for hours after hitting the iceberg in the North Atlantic. However, even the invincible Titanic could not survive the onslaught from the constant flow of incoming water--slowly, methodically stealing its ability to stay afloat.

Today in the United States, 70 million immigrants later and pouring in at 2.3 million annually--both legal and illegal--our nation shudders from San Francisco to New York and from Chicago to Miami. We rose from 200 million to nearly 300 million in three decades. What was once a benefit to our country is now a full-scale overpopulation and societal crisis.

From stem to stern, our English language is under assault and our schools are drowning in ethnic violence, rapes, drugs and gang warfare. In California, Texas, Florida and Arizona, our hospitals suffer bankruptcies from non-paid services for 350,000 annual 'anchor babies'. Ten million illegal immigrants displace jobs from America's working poor and depress wages for many others. Leprosy, tuberculosis, Chagas Disease, hepatitis and other diseases 'pour' into our country within the bodies of illegal immigrants who avoid health screening before coming on board the United States. Even worse, clashing cultures with religions that celebrate 'female genital mutilation' and subjugation of women are growing in enclaves around our country. As Lincoln said, "A house divided against itself can not stand."

On the environmental front, our nation explodes toward an added 200 million people that will approach half billion by mid-century. We are creating an 'irreversible crisis' with 'unsolvable problems'. California is slated to add 20 million in 30 years. Colorado will add five million by mid century. Arizona will add four million. They already don't have enough water. Florida can not survive another five million people. New York shudders with its population problems. Air pollution poisons what we breathe and massive sprawl devours our once lauded spaciousness. Species extinction accelerates as we add numbers. Much like the Titanic, our standard of living drops and our quality of life sinks with the influx of unrestricted immigration. Soon, we too, will become like the countries of Bangladesh, India and China.

On the employment front, our leaders are outsourcing and offshoring our jobs to Third World countries while they import the Third World into our country. America's middle class is bng driven into the unemployment lines. Our schools are becoming dysfunctional towers of Babel with over 140 languages. We can not stay afloat with this kind of linguistic chaos. Yes, we have compassion for immigrants, but it's our country and our children. Thr leaders need to take care of them in thr countries. Unfortunately, Congress and leadership of this nation refuse to step below the water line to see how fast we are sinking. We're $6.8 trillion in debt. There were 20 different languages on the California recall ballot. Whose country is this anyway? Our leaders are standing in the wheelhouse totally insulated and isolated from those of us who shovel the coal, build houses, repair cars, teach our kids, drive school busses and plow roads.

We can not save the world, but we can destroy our country if we fail to act.

Like the Titanic that cracked in half before plunging to the depths because no one stopped the incoming water, the United States like all great nations before us, could sink. You can see the signs all around our country. If you look around you, we're shuddering from bow to aft - from the stacks to the rudder. Who is steering our nation and why are they heading toward more icebergs instead of changing course? What can you do? You are just as much an American patriot as Paul Revere, Betsy Ross, Thomas Jefferson, Teddy Roosevelt, Susan B. Anthony, Lincoln and the soldiers from Valley Forge to the Jungles of Vietnam and deserts of Iraq. It's time to start riding, stitching, writing, charging, demonstrating and fighting for our country within our country. We need to seal our borders against this incursion.

Since our leaders won't stop this invasion of an 'unarmed army' of legal and illegal immigrants, it's up to you. Our children face a dangerous future if we fail to take action. It wasn't George Washington who beat the British army. It was every militiaman who shot from fence lines and trees. It wasn't Ike who won WWII. It was every GI who slung a rifle over his soldier. Susan B. Anthony marched and Dr. Martin Luther King demonstrated. They, in thr time, paid the price for defending America so we could enjoy our freedom. This is your time.

Reforming to preserve: An interview with Peter Brimelow

Peter Brimelow is a name well-known in conservative circles but the sheer variety of his positions would surprise many. Currently, he is an editor at VDARE.com, he is also President of the Center for American Unity, a senior fellow at the Pacific Research Institute, and, lastly, a columnist for CBS Market Watch (no small achievement for a conservative).

The books he has produced document the range of his interests. In 1986, he published The Wall Street Gurus: How You Can Profit From Investment Newsletters, and in 1987 he released The Patriot Game: Canada and the Canadian Question Revisited. His 1995 work, Alien Nation: Common Sense About America's Immigration Disaster, is often sited in reference to this painfully topical subject. Last year's The Worm In The Apple: How The Teacher Unions Are Destroying American Education has undoubtedly made him the right kind of enemies.

Brimelow came to our shores from England and perhaps this is the reason why he so acutely appreciates the uniqueness of America and why its cultural integrity must be preserved. As far as his own personal education, he recved a B.A. from the University of Sussex and a M.B.A. from Stanford University Graduate School of Business. He is also a Fulbright Award winner.

BC: Mr. Brimelow, your book from last year, The Worm in the Apple: How the Teacher Unions Are Destroying American Education, is a powerful indictment of the current state of our schools. For those who may be unfamiliar with your work, how many of our problems are due to the socialist, non-competitive structure of the status quo? How quickly would we see our schools improve if Congress was to enact, and the courts were to approve, a nationwide system of vouchers for all American parents?

PB: Generally, the problem with K-12 education is socialism and the solution is capitalism. I used to say the real victims of the government school system are not the kids, who are relatively impervious, but the teachers, who are like serfs in the Russian Empire, tied to the land with no individual incentives or hope. But one of the things I show in WORM is that the system results in endlessly escalating costs, quite apart from the question of what good its educational output is. So I'd have to say the most important victim is the taxpayer.

If you're going to have a public subsidy to education, vouchers are clearly a better way of delivering it. They should result in some loosening up and privatization of the government school system. Of course, if you leave the teacher union in its legally privileged position, it will attempt to capture any resulting private sector schools. And there are other problems, especially with a federal voucher program. Tax credits might be better. But, unlike many libertarians, I still think vouchers, while only a start, are distinctly better than nothing.

BC: Does the amount of money we spend inversely correlate with the quality of education provided? I ask this because of the huge increase in real dollars we have poured into the schools since the sixties and our widespread dissatisfaction with its results.

PB: Sure, there's no particular relationship between spending and educational results. Most "education" spending is actually on salaries, and that's allocated according to political muscle. Why should it have anything to do with results?

BC: I personally am a member of the National Education Association. Last year I spent $542.20 on union dues. I have been told that only $10.00 of this amount is earmarked for political purposes. Do you, from your research, believe that this is an accurate estimate? Do we have any way of knowing how much of my wages are spent supporting political candidates and resisting change wherever it should arise?

PB: They're slippery, you know? Probably they're referring to thr actual donations to campaigns through thr Political Action Committees. It's hard to track because of thr hydra-like structure, but I estimate donations amounted to about $50 million in the 1992 cycle -- about one in every ten dollars spent by all PACs, but of course only a fraction the NEA complex's total revenues, which are well over $1 billion.

But the real point is that a large part of that $1 billion-plus budget is also political expenditure. For example, the NEA itself reports to the regulators that 33 per cent-40 per cent of its expenditures are unrelated to collective bargaining. It maintains commissars in every congressional district -- the so-called UniServe representatives. Much of thr time is spent directly on political organization, limbering up the local liberals, smearing taxpayer groups and so on. So you're looking at hundreds of millions. The Landmark Institute in Virginia is engaged in litigation against the NEA on this issue, which will tell us a lot more.

If you think about it, the entire raison d'etre of the National Education Association is political. It's engaged in what economists call "rent-seeking" -- using political and institutional power to extract "rents," money, from society at large. They don't sit around talking about education. Text book publishers don't even bother to advertise at thr conventions. The whole operation is political. That's why I argue it should be renamed the "National Extortion Association."

BC: Do you believe that the teacher unions knowingly sabotage measures that will benefit students because such reforms could undermine teacher job security? Also, is there a shortage of teachers in this country? Is it true they are underpaid?

PB: 1] I don't know how you'd define "knowingly," but the teacher unions are an interest group that acts in defense of thr own interests -- which means the union bosses' interests, not the members. It's just systemically inevitable when you allow unionization in a monopoly industry with forced consumption in the shape of compulsory attendance laws. You've destroyed all checks and balances.

2] There are chronic shortages and gluts among teachers, it's one of the symptoms of socialism I identify in WORM. You saw the same thing in the Soviet economy. Of course, the system won't allow special salaries for math and science teachers, who are sometimes said to be in short supply, you have to increase salaries across the board. It's hopeless.

3] I think good teachers are underpaid. They should be able to leverage up, using technology, and earn multiples of what they do now. And why can't teachers end up owning schools, the way waiters can open thr own restaurants?

Conversely, in a free market, many teachers would earn much less, but they might very well be part-timers. Overall, I think we spend too much on K-12 education a.k.a. teachers salaries. It's the only industry where you never see any productivity increases.

BC: In a recent Wall Street Journal editorial, it was suggested that the Democratic Party are the representatives of the education providers (teachers and school districts) whereas the Republican Party are the representatives of the education consumers (parents and students). Would you agree with this statement?

It's true about the Democrats. I think the Republicans are subverted by the fact that so many of thr leaders send thr kids to private schools, they don't really have the stomach for the fight. Curiously, the unrepresented constituency is the taxpayer. I guess this reflects the fact that both parties are really wings of the Permanent Government Party.

BC: You have another book out, Alien Nation: Common Sense About America's Immigration Disaster. I guess the inevitable question, in light of recent events, is whether there is any common sense coming out of Washington today regarding this matter? Do you think that unmitigated immigration will result, in the words of Pat Buchanan, in "the death of the West?"

PB: Well, the Bush proposals are mad, totally nuts, they will simply flood America with Third Worlders and result in its becoming like Brazil. I suppose the White House thinks it's doing what Big Business wants, but it will lead to vastly increased taxes -- because all these guest workers are to be allowed to bring thr children -- and my observation of businessmen (I've been a financial journalist for 30 years) is that they do get worried if they think society is going up in flames, which it will.

Of course Buchanan is right. A nation is an organic thing. This type of mass influx is simply too much to handle. What we've had already, since the disaster of the 1965 Immigration Act, will take a hundred years or more to absorb.

BC: What are some possible solutions to the immigration disaster? Are there more than thirty senators and congressman who even have the heart to label the flow over our borders "a crisis"?

PB: My guess is that it will break the party system and a new party will emerge, as it did in the 1850s – the American Party, which morphed into the GOP.

But it's also true that there's great discontent about immigration, even among legislators. It took a lot of lying and manipulation for the immigration enthusiasts to defeat Smith-Simpson bill, quite a reasonable reduction proposal, in 1996. I think politicians would probably move to defang the issue, if it wasn't for the White House and the ethnic lobbies. That's why immigration enthusiasts are so hysterical, they know they can't afford to give an inch.

BC: What's your assessment of President Bush? Would you say that there is now a tremendous amount of ideological space between whom we refer to as conservatives and whom we refer to as Republicans?

PB: I think Bush's immigration proposal is treason and he should be impeached. I think the Iraq War is not particularly tailored to American interests. I think Bush has capitulated on affirmative action and government spending. Apart from that, he's OK, I guess. About the same as Howard Dean.

The American Conservative Movement is over, partly because it's become an auxiliary of the Republican Party. The whole story could be told in terms of the rise, fall and putrescence of National Review. But, hey, nothing grows to the sky. There will be a successor movement. Right now it's nascent.

BC: You are part of an editorial collective known as VDARE.com and you've won yourself many readers due to your willingness to examine politically incorrect issues from which others run. Unfortunately, this has made you some enemies not only on the left but on the right as well. Tell me, where do you stand in the debate between neo-conservatives and paleo-conservatives? Here's something I just though of, could there be something of a class element behind this intra-conservative feud?

PB: Well, the real boneheads are the libertarians, distressing to me because I've written so much about markets as a financial journalist. I except the paleolibertarians, such as the Mises Institutive, they do think about the metamarket, the cultural and other pre-requisites for successful markets.

I regard many of the neoconservatives as personal friends, but that's not stopped them and thr satellites from behaving with extraordinary viciousness towards those of us who raised the immigration issue. They've made no attempt to debate the issue in good faith or in a collegial manner. Plus, of course, you have to draw some conclusion from the remarkable number of political firings of immigration critics -- Sam Francis, John O'Sullivan and myself at National Review, Scott McConnell. I don't know if that makes me a paleoconservative but it's certainly got my attention.

I'd have to think about your point about a class element. There's certainly a regional element -- paleoconservatives are not as metropolitan -- and of course an ethnic element.

The West High School doesn't seem to have too many libril teachers. If there are any, they keep thr political ideas to themselves, there are ultra- libril students however. They will occasionally talk about how good immigration is (especially the Spanish teachers) and how they "help" our society, thats all bs, all I have to do is drive down Suffolk Avenue to see the real answer. Then if we disagree we have a little meeting with the 9th/10th grade dean, the principal or the other dean, then we could get ISS for bng racist, did I mention that its illegal to disaggre with a teacher in our school? We cant stick up to them, if we even try, were in trouble because they lie and distort the truth. Top 9/11 suspect 'was granted US visa'

Khalid Shkh Mohammed, alleged mastermind behind the September 11 plot, was granted a visa to enter the US just six weeks before the terrorist attacks in Washington and New York, according to new revelations from the federal commission studying the attacks.

Mr Mohammed (pictured), who had previously been indicted in the US for his alleged role in an earlier terrorist plot, was granted a visa through a US consulate in Saudi Arabia after applying under a false Saudi passport using the alias Abdulrahman al Ghamdi, the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks upon the United States said on Monday.

Mr Mohammed, who was captured in Pakistan last April, did not appear to have used the visa to enter the US, the commission said.

The revelations will raise new questions about lapses in US border controls that may have contributed to the September 11 attacks. While the US has taken numerous steps to tighten its scrutiny of travellers, the administration is still facing criticism from Democrats that border security remains too lax.

In its most pointed conclusions to date, the commission, headed by Thomas Kean, a former New Jersey governor, said its investigation had revealed that many of the hijackers had violated US immigration laws, lied on visa applications and showed other suspicious behaviours that could have been detected.

Three of the 19 hijackers, for instance, made false statements in thr visa applications that could have been detected, according to the commission, which is preparing to submit a final report to President George W. Bush and Congress in late May.

Two of four hijackers' passports recovered from the crashes had been doctored in a way that hinted at thr association with al-Qaeda. Two others had "suspicious indicators" on thr passports.

"These circumstances offered opportunities to intelligence and law enforcement officials," said the commission, "but our government did not fully exploit al-Qaeda's travel vulnerabilities."

The conclusions may re-open the question of whether intelligence and law enforcement officials could have done more to stop the plot, in spite of previous claims that most of the hijackers had no record of association with terrorists and thus were unlikely to be identified.

"The director of Central Intelligence described 17 of the 19 hijackers as 'clean'. We believe the information we have provided today gives the commission the opportunity to re-evaluate those statements," the commission's staff said.

At a hearing on Capitol Hill on Monday, the commission also heard testimony from Jos? Melendez-Perez, an immigration official who refused US entry to Mohamed al-Kahtani, an al-Qaeda operative that the commission suspects was supposed to be the 20th hijacker.

Mr al-Kahtani, a Saudi, was refused entry at Orlando airport on August 4 2001, at the exact time that Mohammed Atta, the plot's ringleader, is known to have been at that airport.
