A post from another forum about the state of the police in this day and age (so very true):

Remember those Utopian times when the policeman was our friend? He taught us how to safely ride bikes, use hand signals and when we were in high school and got into trouble, he would take us home with a stern lecture. Now the policeman has a military mindset of take out the objective with any and all force. He has the military mindset, but not the discipline. He travels through a world where anyone who is not a cop is a perp or a skell or a scumbag. In short, most of them are paranoid delusional and if you're not blue you're a target. Welcome to the police state, courtesy of the sheeple.

And where is the good respectful civilian? Find him, and you'll find the cops who still are your friends.
Not here, not while trolls bask in cops getting injured and have no repect for anyone, including themselves.

There are plenty of good, respectful citizens but the cops still act with the same military zealousness of a hezboulah terrorist whether the person running the red light was a skell or a little old lady.

Really so you have seen cops interacting with good people and hezboulah? and you've seen cops interact with skells and little old ladies?
Horseshit. I have good honest people and shitstains with no respect where I work, they are treated accordingly.
Save it.

Where did you go to college, Suffolk Community? If you went to college you would know to use "than" in that sentence, not "then". Typical pig with a high school diploma.

A police department isn't a club or a special interest group - it's a necessary part of government, one of many that helps to accomplish government's most important role, to protect the people. In our free & democratic society, we've placed a multitude of checks & balances into the functioning of this arm and to keep it functioning properly. There are few agencies that undergo the same level of scrutiny. There are internal and external watch dogs (IA, DA, SIC, US Justice, as well as the civil tort system). Most importantly, it's the citizenry itself that establishes how any police department functions.

Due to the nature of the work performed by any PD, there are going to be some people who aren't happy. Much of police work involves conflict, and when the police are called, it's likely someone is going to be sanctioned or disappointed that they didn't get thr way, maybe even arrested. Some go on to make complaints, post on anonymous message boards, or act out in some other way. That's just the way it is in a free society. I love seng this, for the same reason that I'm glad to see the Rev. Al, and other controversial persons- it's validation that our society is working and remains free.

A previous poster lamented about the nature of police officers changing over the years. I don't know about that, but the way police departments address issues & conflict has certainly changed, & I believe that that's what the poster is referring to. That is because the people, through thr elected leaders and the courts, have taken much of the discretion out of the officer's hands. Domestic incidents, accidents, pursuits, almost every incident that a pd is faced with has a set procedure. So yes, the days of officer Jones taking junior home & giving him a stern lecture about bringing his weed to school are over.

If you feel that your police department has run amuk, then do something about it. Educate yourself, dialog with IA or your elected officials, try to attend a citizen's academy, volunteer to be an auxiliary officer, apply for a ride along. Funny thing is, some people are satisfied simply posting nonsense on a message board. Suum cuique.

oh my yes

here you want to know where we are?
I pushed a disabled motorist off the road a few years back, slipped on ice and partially tore my knee ligaments. I was told that it wasnt line of duty and was given workers comp, as opposed to line of duty leave. I took a week off and went back, they didnt have a spot for me so i was back in a sector car, within a month I was chasing a felon thru a few backyards hopped a few fences and landed funny. Now my ligament was torn. Now I was out full line of duty for months. They could have done the right thing in the 1st place, I would have been back within 8 weeks and 100%, now i'll never be the same. I dont push cars off the road anymore.
Last year I changed a womens tire, it was a dark rainy nite... her son who looked old enough instructed me from the manual where the jack went. A week later i am bng investigated for property damage to the vehicle and the husband was claiming I should know better then listen to a 16 y/o. I dont change flats anymore.
Right now i'm bng investigated for a wrongful arrest and civil rights violation where a girl claimed her ex was harrassing her over the phone, threatening to kill her. I took a statement stating that she recognized his voice and phone #, and wanted him arrested. 2 days after the arrest she dropped the charges, ia investigated but didnt pursue crim charges agianst her...falsely reporting a incident. Last month I pulled them over together in a car.....
I was reported to ia last year for speeding...I was going lites + sirens to a true emergency call.
I used to talk to store mgt when they had a kid caught shoplifting if he was a 1st timer to let me talk to his parents, but nowadays if you do not press charges when they want you to, they have ia on speed dial and file a report against you for failure to take police action.
Kids today dont really want to talk to me, most dont even wave back.
So forgive us if we dont trust you all the time, its a two way street. Most of us want to be community oriented cops, but have been burned too often.

Oh let me put this out there...none of this is a complaint I am happy bng a cop.

Officer, why bother trying to educate an idiot? He'll just try to drag you down to his level and beat you with his experience. Throughout the 70s and 80s I was a cop in northern New England it was the same thing cops were: fascists, brutal, arrogant, overpaid, always breaking the law, etc. etc. If you charged a puke with resisting arrest AND assault the judge would fine the moron 50 or a hundred bucks for resisting and tell the officer that getting roughed up or spit at was part of a cops job and throw out the assault case. The public felt the same.

The only deterrent for fighting cops was "falling down the stairs at the station", improperly applied cuffs, waffle stops and becoming the "special project" of all the cops in the small city. Cops had to live in the city and your average carpenter, electrician and auto body tech were better paid. I loved the job. Fellow cops were brother officers.

We gave other cops breaks on motor vehicle, and minor-beefs where there was no victim. Your first DWI with NO ACCIDENT got you a ride home. The second time usually got you a ride home and an appointment with the chief. Any cop doing any felony was not given any break and was treated like any other criminal who was hiding behind a badge.

We would usually hire 3 cops at a time and even then, despite the low pay, lack of respect, spending your day off in court for a $30.00 witness fee-etc. we always had at l a 150 applicants. Hell, even the informants working off cases were buffs.

Now, even the cops up here are making 70 or 80K per year still get 50% after 20 years with health benefits for life. Where ever you go in this country and Great Britain you are part of a very exclusive brotherhood. A cop's job is interesting, vital and generally respected. Who wouldn't be jealous of that? The people on this site that are ridiculing and criticizing the job would gladly take your place behind the badge for 25% of what you are bng paid

On your 20 year, you'll rnjure your knee and get 3/4 tax free for the rest of your life which will be about $100,000 a year. Up and until then you'll make about $140,000 a year for practically doing nothing. So forgive us for not having any sympathy for you. We the taxpayer also have been burnt too often.

Really I make 140k? Funny I've yet to clear 120k. Why would I wait for 20 years, when I could go out right now?
No one is looking for sympathy. I was attempting to engage in a mature conversation about the differences between policing now, and back when society was utopian, not setting up a spring board for you to go into your jealous, ignorant and hateful rant. Oh crystal ball loser
Yet another difference between the utopia and our reality.

I say hi to kids, they say nothing back.
A eyar ago I had 2 kids(17y/os) who were driving and the passenger threw a firecracker at a 5 y/o on his bike with his dad. The 5 y/o fell off and recved a small burn from the firecracker. When dad caught them, he was a nyc corrections he held them and myself and him had a long talk. He ididnt want to press charges. I didnt trust the kids for shit, so after the talk and they left i took a statement from him supporting a assault 3, and a reckless driving, sure enough within the hour both sets of parents were at the pct talking about thr sons rights and lawsuits and ia complaints. They made no allegations of improper conduct, just that I didnt have the right to detain them, etc etc.
My desk was fully aware of what happened, and called me in.
When i entered the room, I got the typical indignant liberal asshole act from the parents, let them get it all out and thats when I informed them the victim's dad changed his mind, and I had to arrest thr kids. I informed them the victim has the right to press charges for up to a year, cuffed them both and left. You could hear a pin drop.
When cops try to be "nghborhood cops" and not follow the rules we get shit, when we do our jobs correctly we get shit. So if i dont know you, or trust you, I'm sorry, there are too many angles I can get it from.
Wake up and smell the coffee, its a different world. kids arent sneaking cigarettes between classes, they are sneaking heroine. Kids arent fighting in the bathroom, they are bringing guns.
If I arrest a kid for shoplifting parents arent coming down, lawyers are.
If i read your kid the riot act for driving like a idiot, you are coming down with it on your cellphone and filing lawsuits and complaints.
Thats were we are now. If you want old school cops turn back into old school people.
