I took a Nassau Civil Service test and the salary on the announcement said "Varies" and listed the position as paying 57-64k in Meadow. I recved a canvass letter with a salary of 35k on it. I am high on the list. Do I go on the interview and ask for more money if they want to hire me? Has anyone else had this experience? Why is there such a big difference? Thank you for any help... confused.

Thanks to those who replied- Unregistered and Steps, for honest info. Did not mean to start such a mess- the economy is in such poor shape and so many people are struggling, just happy to get something with such great benefits for now.

They do not wish to hire you, but you are higher up on the list than the niece, uncle, buddy, lover who they actually are trying to get hired so they are offering you such a low salary that they figure you will decline so they are free to move down the list until the reach the lower scoring, probably barely qualified or maybe even not legitimately qualified, political hack. This happened to a friend of mine who took a computer test in Nassau and was really great with computers but they offered a salary much lower than the examination announced because he was an actual real person and the examination was geared for hacks.

Crybaby. Don't you just hate it knowing that you have to pay my salary with your tax dollars? Me, a ged graduate with a BOCES education. I make more than you ever will. And don't go crying to Kate (whose 83 year old father works for the town and makes over $100K). Or to Tom (who will tell you to go complain to Kate). Just shut up and keep paying your town taxes. I'll be thinking about you whenever I get on my boat.

ASK FOR MORE MONEY

Ask for a higher salary...if they say no...decline.. Get it in writing or tape meeting. Then when they fill position with the "one" they want...foil salary. ANYONE can foil salary info..trust me. Then sue!

Sue for what?

What is he suing for? Its expensive to bring a lawsuit and for what - to get a job he's not wanted for? That'll be a miserable life and ultimately wind up with him bng set up to get fired for some made up reason that will probably affect his future credibility with legitimate employers. Better to take that information and peddle it to the NY Post or channel 5 news. Bad publicity of a corrupt government is now more harmful and more of a deterrent for future bad acts then anything else. Sux for the guy losing out to some hack but maybe next time he'll get the job.

Look at the female correction officer who scored high on the police exam and they didnt hire her. She sued and is getting the differnce between her salary and the NCPD salary for years to come.. the immediate award was 200,000.00. More to come. It takes guts to take them on...do your homework...get the lowball offer in writing, write back...ask for more $..document everything. Karl Kampe is nothing...spineless twit running a corrupt department.

Different circumstances

SHE has a discrimination lawsuit. That's different than bringing a lawsuit directly against the commission for basically failing to follow its rules and to do its job the right way. The real way for change is ther to get a class action - one lone guy isn't going to bring them down.

Thank God she wasnt hired or any female - do you really expect a 5' 6" female or shorter to subdue a male inmate nearly 6' 2" wghing 220 pounds. The women would put thr fellow male officers in danger. The NCPD needs to wake up and stop bng politically correct. If women want to officers, give them a specialized unit - like washing horses down.

As a civilian who works with cops all day long I can vouch for the MANY excellent female cops on the job...some better than thr male counterparts.
There is good and bad in all ...wasn't it a female who shot that 10-62(EDP) in the 7th a few years back. She did what she was trained to do so no innocent bystanders got hurt.

Crap

If this is a county position, the salary difference may be attributable to the step system. This is how it works. When first hired, you get only about 60% of the posted salary for 6 months. Then it increases to about 75% of the posted salary. After 1 year of service you recve the posted salary. This is referred to as step OA (60%) step OB (75%) and step 1 (100%). Each year thereafter you increase a step up to step 10. This was negotiated in the employment contract as a give back to the county by the union. You will also not be eligible for healthcare for the first 6 months. Hope this helps.

That's crap. People take the test expecting the posting salary. 60% of the starting "range" is nothing more than a 6 month salary lag which is not retroactively given back to the employee and any union representative that agreed to that should be shot. It is also false advertising and misleading. Finally, a new person hired for a job advertised at a certain salary was not part of the union contract and deserves the salary posted in the examination that induced them to take the exam in the first place. Sue for deceptive business practices.

Surface crap
07-18-2008, 11:50 PM
Crap on the surface but dig deeper. Its real shit. That 60% system - if that's true - discourages outsiders from applying. Someone on the outside won't take a job at low rate so they decline, passing down further to someone lower scoring. That person could likely be a political favorite, or a relative or buddy - someone that ther has an appointed job but needs security - a fall back position incase elections don't go well - or was working provisional or just needs to transfer from one agency to another. They get the higher rate and civil service can pretend its legitimate based on steps. Fact is the starting salary needs to be adjusted to attract the highest scoring people into the job on par with what the job is worth. And that is if the test was accurately and legitimately scored. These things based on past history are completely discretionary in thr scoring.

No surprise there

No wonder she won - with that kind of attitude she deserved more money. What do you do with the 5' 6" hispanic male cop that affirmative action says you have to hire? Gee - I would think the academy should know how to train an accepted cop to leverage wght to get the job done huh?

The Nassau County Department of Civil Service gives the examinations. Sometimes prompted by specific vacancies. You have to be aware that different jurisdictions (County, School Districts, Towns, etc.) pull candidates from the same lists. Different jurisdictions have disparate salary schedules.
Review your canvass letter again. Were you called for the specific job in Meadow you first read about? Probably not. Something else to be aware of - once you take a position somewhere, you are removed from the eligible list, so choose carefully.

This is what the hiring pool looks like

http://www.newsday.com/long-island/suffolk/dad-daughter-s-jail-stint-a-blessing-1.2708003?print=true

Here's the best part:

"Michael Smith, who works for a supermarket, said his daughter has been using drugs -- "everything but heroin" -- since she was 14 or 15. Drugs caused her to give up such hobbies as bowling and horseback riding, and curtailed what he said was a promising cosmetology career.

His daughter graduated two years ago from Newfield High School, Smith said. She has worked at a department store and baby-sat her stepbrother while working "odd jobs," he said. She had talked about joining the military or becoming a police officer."

I'm sure Levy will be happy to take her $100 test fee. She's got a shot.

Just like the guy who showed up to take his polygraph:
Examiner: "Have you ever used cocaine?"
Applicatn: "Yes"
Examiner: "When was the last time you used cocaine?"
Applicant: "About.....20 minutes ago."
(Examiner looks up when he hears this thinking the test subject is making a joke....he's not)
Examiner: "20 minutes ago?"
Applicant: "I know I shouldn't have but I was really nervous about all this."
Examiner: "Ahh.....wait here a minute." ( He then leaves the room to get this idiots investigator who will break the news to this moron that we really don't want him and his cocaine habit on the job.
