No more parades so the FD can waste thousands of dollars of tax money on gas! This overspending has got to stop! These parades are completely pointless.

Sure thing, do you actually think we like getting dressed up in a cheap 100% polyester dark blue uniform in 90 degree weather to march through a friggin town like circus monkeys for the residents.
I agree bag all parades I volunteer to protect my community not act like a trained circus chimp...

Don't say no to parades we should continue to have them.
Instead make sure you go to the parades and spray silly string on the trucks.

Parades, races and drills have got to be the #1 cause of high fuel prices.
Ya I'm sure the dot heads are sitting over in Saudi Arabia saying lets raise the cost of fuel so we can screw with the FD parades and drills on Long Island.

yea sure they are. i love how everyone blames the fd for high fuel costs but says nothing about nascar or busch or craftsman truck racing. they go through an insane amount of fuel that is higher then the highest we can get at the pumps. c16 racing fuel. think about it for a second 42 cars in a race. 4 or 5 tanks of fuel per car per race at 18 gallons a pop. thats alot of racing fuel that they could have refined not as much an boom hey we have regular gas lower the prices

Had a wonderful time at the Port Jefferson Fire Dept Annual 4th of July Parade. I haven't marched in this one for a long time. Mostly sat on the side lines watching my other half. Well Everyone was cheering and thanking us. Don't see anyone saying "not to parade" Parades not only show Dept spirit but town spirit.

Just Vote

There's 2 ways to stop the parades. Vote on the Dept. floor to stop parading or stop the drill teams from racing(another useless waste of money). The teams that race MUST parade.
Either way I'll see you on Saturday at the Parade...LOL.

the world has changed, the 50's & 60's are gone this is the age of two or three job families, working weekends, $5 gas, higher taxes...
the day of the small town parades are gone
not saying it's a good thing but it is reality
parades & drills are a thing of the past, let them go quietly

No one is blaming the FD for high gas prices. They fact that they use tons of gas which is completely wasted going to and from parades is the issue. The reason no one is complaining about nascar is b/c sponsors pay for gas not TAX PAYERS!!!! You are all wasting tax payer money and that includes your own tax money. Hundreds of thousands of tax dollars can be saved by not letting the dept vehicles in the parade. You want to go march...take your own car and walk!
wahhhhhhh
07-11-2008, 08:02 PM
wahhhh wahhh wahhhh they're wasting gas! That's hardly a waste when you consider the amount of false alarms the FD responds to, usually due to the homeowner's negligence or the "taxi service" ambulance calls that anyone could have driven themselves to the hospital for. Your tax dollars aren't going to change and if that's what you gripe about your local FD spending it on, go to your board of fire commissioners meeting and voice your opinion.

If your Board is smart they are either in a locked in State Bid Contract for Diesel delivery or in a Co-op within a Township with similar pricing. Other than racing fuel, which is two drums a year, price is locked. Yes there are increases in the contract due to market conditions, but they are way lower than John Q Public is seeing at the pump. And parades, even in the gas crisis thirty five some odd years back they were limited, yet continued. Remember when those of us with round "V" stickers in the window could jump lines and not abide the "odd plate", "even plate" rules at the gas station? Boy everybody signed up to join that year!
I hate to sound like my Dad but, "you kids haven't experienced $hit in the way of heartache" You have been protected for over 38 years, living in a protective bubble all that time. So go back to the simple life, take the kids to a parade, let them wave a cheap flag or wave to a friends Father or Mom marching. Maybe their own. Cheap night out on the lawn chair, old home talk to your townsfolk for one day we don't do that anymore. Short of the coins just buy them one Ice Cream each or better yet Bring your own for them in a lunch bag. For God's sake! Bring back the simple pleasures of a family / community evening out!
It's stupid when the complainers are missing the very value of bringing people together as a community, during hard times and just letting the pressures go away for an hour or two.. You can't avoid it, but you can forget about it for a little while, where has the fight gone out of us all as a culture? Just me me me me me.
It's not the parades, stop them now, and the High School football games, cancel them, send your jobs to India to answer consumer calls. A Japanese carmaker is larger than GM? We have lost the only thing we had people.. In our past we never quit no matter how hard it got or how long we had to work to make that dream. We got together and figured it out for generations. We never handed that down to this generation evidently. That's what you should be blogging about, not how much fuel they are using, figure how much fossil fuel you are using on this stupid rant site....

i am not good at this, but that said it all. I remember just bieng excited about smelling the new cut grass in the fireman's field when the carnival came in. Wasn't much. Mom helping at the gate, Dad in one of the booths, big sister taking us around with just a few tickets each, had to really decide what was the important ride or game, did not have too many chaces to play. none of us had much. But it was fun, and i sure didn't and nobody else seemed to mind either. Smiles and crowds all around. Good times.

and i am certainly not one of the ass holes newsday rips apart and proud of that
i feel that a fire dept is a brother hood and even a sister hood...we are all family and need to be able to trust one another in or out of a fire...so i would never represent my department by being an ass hole...i can understand the upsetment of the motorized drill team but not parades... i say go back to the old fashion drills and keep parades around

Unregisteredstatebid said a lot, that we tend to forget in the volunteer service. It's the best part of small town America, so much of which is being lost, or exported, or forgotten. I don't really like parades, but I realize they bring a community together, so I march when I must.
It's nice to read something positive in this part of the nnnnnnnnreport, for a change. Well said, brother.

A parade (also called march or marchpast) is a procession of people, usually organized along a street, often in costume, and often accompanied by marching bands, floats or sometimes large balloons. Parades are held for a wide range of reasons, but are usually celebrations of some kind. In Britain the term parade is usually reserved for either military parades or other occasions where participants march in formation; for celebratory occasions the word procession is more usual.
Protest demonstrations also sometimes take the form of a parade, but in such cases are usually referred to as a march instead.
The parade float got its name because the first floats were decorated barges that were towed along canals with ropes held by parade marchers on the shore[citation needed]. Today, parade floats are traditionally pulled by motor vehicles or powered themselves.
Since the advent of technology, it is possible for aircraft and boats to parade. A flypast is an aerial parade of anything from one to dozens of aircraft, both in commercial context at airshows and also to mark, e.g., national days or significant anniversaries. They are particularly common in the United Kingdom, where they are often associated with Royal occasions. Similarly, for ships, there may be a sail-past of, e.g., tall ships, as was seen during Trafalgar 200, or other sailing vessels as during the celebrations of the 60th anniversary of World War II. The longest parade in the world is the Marksmen's Parade that takes place in Hanover every year during the Schützenfest. The parade is 12 kilometres long with more than 12,000 participants from all over the world, among them more than 100 bands and around 70 floats and carriages.
