View Full Version : When Will It Be Enough $$$ For The PBA ?
ENOUGH IS ENOUGH ALREADY?

I like to read this site as it offers a brief respit from my daily routine and also an inside look at many Police Officers and thier views on just about everything. I am perplexed by the recent and ongoing debate with reference to the SC PBA contract bargaining, and the assertion by that union that by simply saying NO, the County Executive has been demonized by union officials. I am sorry that you all think this, but in all honesty your wages and compensation for the previous 20 or so years have been at the very top of the salary scale for not only this area, but also within your field. Many times it came to light that your rank and file had earned more than anyone else within Suffolk County, (Newsday covers in six of the last fifteen years). It is counterproductive to pretend that you do not recieve a most fair and adequate salary and benefits package. It is also counterproductive for your membership to continue in thier attempts to beat up Mr Steve Levy here and elsewhere. Who is stearing your ship? It is apparent that whomever that is simply is not reading any of the popularity polls curently bng conducted by numerous organizations and the News media. Mr Levy is recognized as the champion of the local taxpayer, BY ALL WHO ACTUALLY CARE! You however are currently viewed as the BULLY in all this, once again kicking and screaming in your attempts to press yet another County Executive into a corner for the sake of your contract. Ladies and Gentlemen; the cat has been out of the bag for awhile now - you cost way too much for the County to continue to be sucessful and for the consumer to remain here. So the fight goes. This is your year, likely over the next four or five years, the war will rage with the teachers unions as well. The average taxpayer is sick and tired of jobs that pay well above the county average and cost us millions in taxes for excessive benefits.
SPIN IT WHATEVER WAY YOU WANT TO, SUFFOLK COPS MAKE TOO MUCH - AND STEVE LEVY IS TRYING TO PUT A STOP TO YOUR EXCESSES - END OF STORY!
Just my opinion, let the cursing begin!

Your opinion and you are entitled to it. However your opinion here doesnt really matter much does it?
If it did lipa wouldnt be so high, your school taxes wouldnt be so high, oil prices wouldnt be so high.
We arent the downfall of the county, not when a tank of home heating oil that lasts 1 whole month is more expensive then our annual tax which is over our cost by 1/3. Or school taxes are 6x the actual cost of our services. Or a weeks worth of gas to commute, or 3 months electrical bill, or...well you get the picture

There are only 1.5 Million people in Suffolk County. So you would only have $1.5 Million. However, are you saying the SCPD are not worth it? I grew up in NYC and to see some of those nabes slide into anarchy and disrepair is truly disheartening. The SCPD has not allowed that to happen out here. I have lived here for 22 years and the quality of life is just as good now as it was then. Some people only notice the PD when things go wrong, but how about a little props for keeping the lid on things out here? I still feel pretty safe out here, and my kids can go to the public schools without having to deal with the dregs of society. Some of you don't know how good you got it!

Your argument is based on the pd taxes driving you out of li, well if the pd tax is forcing you out then so is filling up your gas tank, oil tank, school tax, etc etc etc etc etc etc.
You know the deal own real property pay taxes. You dont want to pay then dont.

You the singular troll have hit this line of thinking before, my landscaper charges me more then my police taxes, and again that is your option to have a landscaper, and a dry cleaner. You opted to own property you have to pay taxes. too bad

Its just the police depts fault...ok thats logical..The police need a wage to be able to live here, not be made wealthy especially upon retirement. You work less than teachers, you get paid a base of almost 120k per year, you get all the O/T you want, you don't pay for healthcare, you don't contribute to your pension, you accrue sick and vacay days and take a payout at the end of the year. Yes other costs are high. Police compensation is more than high, it's astronomical when you consider everything at the trough for you animals.

My landscaper charges me 120 a month for 6 month plus 100 for cleanup 2x a year., 920 a year...and its a option...my police taxes, 840, and a third goes elsewhere, so 600 for my police....
Having a landscaper is a option, owning a home is a option.

If your landscaper is sub-standard and messes up a job, you may get a yellow lawn. If you go to a discount dry cleaner and he happens to screw the pooch one fine day, maybe you lose a dress shirt. If you lower the standards of your local PD, or understaff it to the point where response times are affected, maybe someone you love dies. Also, if, G*d forbid, someone you know is hurt, raped, robbed, or killed, if it happens in Suffolk, you can pretty much bet there are going to find the guy. Know why? They hire the cream of all those in the Tri-State area who are interested in law enforcement. You get what you pay for. These guys actually give a damn about what they're doing. The SCPD can afford to be picky. If Levy continues to destroy the present structure and corrode morale, this will not continue to be the case. I consider the money well-spent.

Having a landscaper is a option, owning a home is a option.Yes but paying cops appropriately is not an option - no market hand at work there. Just corrupt county executives that wanted voted and arbitors that followed suit after the corrupt county execs opened the flood gates. Yes, I can fire my landscaper. However, I cannot get rid of over priced and under performing police. That's why village policing is on the rise. It may have failed in Mineola, but where they failed we will succeed. The SCPD is going to lose more and more coverage each year they continue to gauge the tax payers.

So a 30% decrease in overall compensation, while still a very high paying job, won't have 30,000 people taking the test for 200 spots? Ok, how many people will be waiting to take the test, 20,000? Don't you think out of 20,000 we can hire just as talented young men and women for the job? Or are you saying all cops go for is the money and they wouldn't want to take a job in the county they group up in because they can make a few thousand somewhere else? Your argument has no merit and it's something you cannot win.

Funny My total last year was 220 days, 4 entire days less then my brother in construction.
and your point has nothing to do with the argument at hand. The issue was scpd taxes are driving people off the island, yet it less then about 500 other things in life, and it isnt a requirement to own property to live here.

Arguing about fantasies? Why bother. You know its not going to happen. Its impossible. Tell me how you are going to lower salaries...talk about a argument without merit, and something you cant win!!!!
You still havent explained how you are going to lower pay by 30 %??? While our contract is expired, both parties live by the terms within. You cannot change a thing. And please dont tell me how the arbitrator is lowering our pay. Prices have gone up, on everything. and there is a good chance we'll get a better deal then Nassau simply based on this fact. Don't take my word for it! You need look no further than the NYPD to see what the end result will be. Why lower the standard to the surrounding areas? Let them raise thrs! When did police work become lumped in with sanitation, landscaping, contractors, etc. as "just another service"? The SCPD has higher standards and it is evident in the low crime rates. All the more impressive when you consider the proximity to NYC (20 miles), the size of the population (1.5 Million, as stated earlier), and the huge influx of illegal immigrants with thr accompanying gang and poverty issues. And, they do it with only 1700 patrol cops. Maybe you and your family are content to take the risk of less qualified people becoming police, but I certainly am not.

The low crime rate has less to do with the police and more to do with county demographics. Even so, by decreasing total compensation 30% do you honestly think the lines for the exam will shrink below 20,000? Don't you think LI by it's nature will get more qualified candidates given many LIers want to work in thr backyards and not in the city? Don't you think suburban areas get more police applicants per open positions because the risk on your life is significantly less? Stop trying to cry wolf here... Its not just his opinion. Both ce's, both county legislatures, Newsday, NY Times, Matthew Crosson, head of the LI Business Council, and a majority of taxpayers.
Arbitrators don't have opinions, there forced to award raises based on the TL's section BINDING ARBITRATION FOR POLICE.

Oh ok, so you watching a mother crying and you want 120k a year for that? Sorry pal, sell your BS somewhere else. We residents of LI aren't buying it!
It'll be in the paper tomorrow, most likely on News12 tonight. I've seen plenty of peolpe cry, even for the likes of you. If your reading comprehension were above the elementary level, you'd realize I was relating a horrible story about the likely, tragic death of a child. It is not the first child I've seen die, I'm sure it won't be the last. How many times have you witnessed such a thing? How many times have you tried in vain to save ANYONE? You think my day ended when I went home from that?

Maybe only for dead end government employees SCPD is one of the only great jobs, but for anyone with ambition and intelligence there are plenty of great jobs in the private sector.

I've been reading this thread with utter dsigust. I am amazed at the general nature of the SCPD Officers who continue to demand these huge increases. No it's not JUST your fault, it's the gas prices, the economy, the teachers salaries, etc. It's all of that, but yes it most certainly includes YOU! Don't sit back pretending that you dont know how much better off you are than most of your nghbors because that would simply make you a bad liar. You guys have been riding a gravy train for over 25 years, and I for one am very glad to see Mr Levy giving it to you in spades. I want you off the highway, out of the water, out of the air, and back to doing what we actually need from you - fighting crime! If we can do all that, then you won't need the 300 or so more Officers who are waiting in the wings to fill those empty slots created by retirements etc.
You guys are gonna get hurt in this next arbitration and most taxpayers cant fu#king wait.

Oh spare us, read theses threads dont you know the private sector is the place to be? We are all these things we are bng called...
If you follow the thread, you'd know we lose over 100 cops a year, and the divisions you are speaking of make up a whopping 75-85 cops total. Levy isnt giving it to us, hes giving it to you. You are the one whos serivces are bng cut and not replaced. We still have our jobs. Marine and aviation I wouldnt get in there if i caught bin laden.
We arent getting hurt, Look to the west see what nassau got? Expect about the same +or- a few cents.

A gravy train for 25 years? Levy giving it to us in spades? You have certainly had a big cup of the kool-aid, haven't you? Think ON YOUR OWN for a few moments...here, I'll give you some tips:
-Off the Highway * Levy's 1st deadline for transfers came and went, second deadline for transfers came and went, ...no transfers. Oh and criminals don't travel the LIE?
- Out of the water* YOU LIVE ON AN ISLAND YOU DOLT !!
- Out of the air* Who will transport you and yours when you are seriously injured? Lost? Sinking in your boat ON THE WATER?
Should we also do away with our police radios and go back to the call boxes? What other facets of a modern police dept. would you like to dispense with? What will happen when the cops you want transfered retire? How will you cut costs then? Security guards?
Your final statement defeats your own arguement... we are in arbitration. Levy is no longer involved. He failed. Our next raise (and there will be a raise) is bng decided by an independent, objective third party that will discover the County is not broke like Levy impLIES, and we will be granted a fair and adequate increase. At the L.

Hey dipshit knock it off, if you want to say "li is too expensive for me" Thats fine, but please dont pretend that the difference between staying and going is your supposed police tax. Because it isnt. If you were refunded your police tax for 08, and that was enough money for you NOT to move, well what about next year? Horseshit, if you were on the verge of leaving, and got 700 bucks, how long would it keep you afloat ?Or when your car breaks down? When you want to go on vacation? Oil burner goes? Refrigerator? Washing machine? If that money is the difference YOU'VE ALREADY STAYED TOO LONG. Your house is worth shit compared to last year.
Where I live I'm middle of the road, there are people doing better and worse, never really concerned myself with that. But I dont go to my nghbor and claim he is overpaid and shouldnt take the money hes getting paid, or request some of it back.

Median family income for Suffolk is $74,000. Top pay for a 5 year cop is $96,000 throw in nsd, holiday pay(whether you work it or not) uniform allowance(free uniforms) no pension contributions you're looking at $120,000 a year without OT. Thats $46,000 more a year than the average tax payer makes. Statistically about 90% of the taxpayer is doing worse than you and there paying your salary. I say there is something wrong with that scenario.

Your figures are accurate but you missed a few things; like 26 paid sick days each year, free medical -(no % pay in at all), 6 personal leave days - paid, grievance days at 3-5 per family member lost and again fully paid days off, the list goes on and on and on.
On my job we get 7 sick days, we get straight time on hloidays, (if we work them), but we are allowed to leave 2 hours early, we contribute 20% of our medical, (currently $922. for a family plan), we are allowed to use up to four personal days a year when we lose a loved one, no more than 2 at a time, and the list ends right there. I work 46 hours each week, and I work two shifts, (10 hours), at the local Stop and Shop and I currently earn just over $58,000. a year. When added to the $27,000. my wife earns as a medical office receptionist we are just over the suffolk county average median income of $77, 560. We continue to count ourselves lucky as we have been able to raise all three children here and put them through college. The concern most of us at my age have though is this - "How am I going to afford to saty here after I retire"? A Suffolk cop may think his $135,000. salary, (after overtime), is worthy of his expertise and the risky nature of his business. But it's hard to gauge it properly when you consider that since 1980 an average of 6 NYPD cops are killed in the line of duty each year. In comparison to only .042 SCPD cops. SCPD currently earns $30,000.+ a year more than NYPD. So the basis for your salary is obviously NOT how often you get shot at or how many of you perish during each year. So when you continue to post these ridiculous comments on here you only look foolish.

Why thank you for sticking up for him.
Taxes are going to go up, but the only tax you want to worry about is scpds??? ok thats believeable..... however what none of you seem to care about is where are the supposed police taxes you've paid for 500 additional cops going? Right now our union is showing how that money can go to our raises for 6 years without costing you a additional penny, and leaving room for additional hires at a rate almost equal to retirement. So if it is a ball that keeps rolling or whatever it is the counties doing.
I dont know where you get i told him to stop posting, Never said that...please reread and quote where I told him to stop posting, my actual words were "Hey dipshit knock it off, if you want to say "li is too expensive for me" Thats fine, but please dont pretend that the difference between staying and going is your supposed police tax" Knock it off as in dont blame scpd for your money problems.

Not one cop compares scpd to nypd,...that is a issue you and others "like" you visit. nypd is underpaid. They work in a area that is horrible to work for. That is why they are underpaid.

Also, the Suffolk exam is open to anyone who has US citizenship, a NYS driver's license and a HS diploma (or even a GED) plus the $100 test fee. If you think they make such a ridiculous salary, why didn't you take the test?

That my fellow taxpayers is the best post written by any cop. It shows not only a complete disdain for the taxpayers burden but a cavalier and public be dammed attitude of Suffolk's finest. Who would be "worried, concerned or anything but happy" to make six figures a year, be off for most of it, while taking the taxpayer to the cleaners with benefits that the taxpayer can only dream of and all of this with only a modicum of danger which of course gets magnified to great lenghts on this thread.

The taxes may be somewhat less, but your fat salaries and benefits would be the same, along with your arrogant and condescending attitude towards the public. And your next contract would still be 4% a year for 6 years, even with no money in the budget. In any event , the public is still getting screwed.

Modicum of danger? I guess you only read the parts of the paper where Levy tells you what to think. You must have missed the article a few days ago about the SCPD drug search warrant where we were shot at by a drug dealer that was subsequently put down by us. Does that meet your definition of modicum of danger?

So if your taxes could be less, what do you care what the cops make? Or is that the REAL issue?
Btw If you were a normal person I'd treat you as such, but you are gutter trash, and angry jealous trash at that. That is how you are treated. I'm sure you are used to it...
You claim there is no money in the budget, yet the police tax is in surplus. It is every year there is a contract talk. There is our raises right there.
The public is getting screwed you are right, you are paying the county 33% more then you need to. I'm certain its bng used somewhat properly, elsewhere... but you really cant blame scpd for that situation. Your taxes would still be as high as they are now, your police taxes would be lower, and something else would be higher...

The real issue IS that you make too much damn money, and due to the trickle down effect on the taxpayer, we get to pay more for you. I understand all that's been said, written and written over again about the 1/3 of the personnel not even on the job stuff. I appreciate all the information you and your co workers have so generously supplied to me with reference to the amount of your staffing levels as opposed to the actual taxable amount the County is claiming when producing household tax numbers, however;
YOU GUYS STILL MAKE WAY TOO MUCH MONEY FOR THE CURRENT CLIMATE AND I HOPE THAT STOPS SOON!

Talk to your local govt and demand to find out where the 200-400 bucks of your so called police taxes are going, and be sure its not going to a special interst you do not want to fund. Why should I get killed? I have a gun, I have every right to shoot if I feel my life is endangered. I've been t-boned rear ended and purposely struck by a drunk, a fleng perp and a self centered moron. But saw it coming and recved only minor injuries, and minimal time missed.

so the mortality rate is essentially 0 yet you trump how risky your job is? Here's your cake now stuff your face...
For starters I've yet to see a post from a cop discuss how "risky" our job is, other then to rebutt a person like yourself claims there is not danger whatever. The mortality rate is 0 because of the training and deployment of the training we've recved. Our police work is no more or less dangerous then police work done thruout the U.S. We still get hurt, we still are exposed to diseases, hit by drunk or careless drivers, spit on, assaulted, shot at, etc etc. Those who have been shot survived because they were wearing body armor, and thr major organs werent hit. There is more risk in this world then just dying you know, you can be hurt, infected etc etc.
I'd agree with the cops who have posted stating if the mortality rate was higher, it would mean our training was suspect, and it is a negative, not a positive. I dont think the nypd has bad training, when you look at the number of cops who were killed compared to the total gross number of cops working and population, its not really that bad in the nypd.
by the way, before a troll chimes in, I'm not complaining by stating the various dangers I've faced, and yes I knew it when I took the job, save the lecture.

Wrong, less of your money goes to our salaries then in the past 15 years. You do not pay more for "us"...you pay more taxes to your county for a theoretical # of cops. It isnt our fault that you are taxed on the maximum # of cops and not getting a fully staffed dept. It is not our fault you are paying 33% over the actual cost of our dept.
My salary isnt dependant on the climate, it doesnt go up or down based on the economy. When the market was booming a few years back, not one cop posted anonymously here or on any other webboard how we should be making more because the rest of society is doing well. So now the climate is bad? well, you dont get a refund, and you cant ask to get our salaries cut.
This isnt the real issue, its your issue.

If your mortality rate was higher, it would mean that your job was more dangerous than it is now. Not always. Why is the mortality rate higher? Is it accidental discharge? Fatigue, mental errors, human error, just because more employees are dying doesnt equate more danger. In the case of the nypd detective killed a few years back, it was determined had they worn body armor, they would have lived.
In the case of the nypd cop shot at white castles it was determined he couldnt hear the orders from the police on the scene to drop the weapon, it was also a error in communications that the police arriving on scene didnt know there was a off duty officer involved.

Our people serving in Iraq and Afghanistan are surviving attacks and injuries that caused fatalities in past conflicts. Why? Better equipment, better training and advances in medical care. Does that mean that because thr mortality rate is lower they're facing less danger than soldiers in past conflicts? Tell that to some of the horribly disfigured people coming home. The same goes for police work. The Nassau cop injured on the Expressway might have died just a few years back. I'm certain that advances in medical care have something to do with his survival. The same goes for many other cops injured in the line of duty. Better equipment, training and medical care have reduced the mortality rate, but the dangers still exist. Gee, we don't face enough danger. How much is enough? What does our "mortality rate" need to be to justify our salaries? Not enough of us are dying? You think differently as do your fellow pigs, but you don't matter. It's the tax payers that matter and we are fed up with the li police bull shit. Me afraid of you? Puhleeeeze. If you were a real tough guy you wouldn't be hiding behind your mommy's skirt. You're a pathetic, limp wristed impotent pussy. You'd NEVER have the balls to face a cop on or off duty. What I'm concerned about is my family. I can certainly see an impuissant asshole like yourself picking on women and children. An obvious psychopathic coward like you would wait until I'm not home and then do something stupid. Arson comes to mind. That is your vocation, isn't it? All you need to do is mouth off to the next cop you see. Maybe it'll be me...
You just don't matter, you're powerless and it kills you.

Yup, you're off your rocker. So, you want me to give my address to a raving lunatic that wishes misfortune, pain and death on every cop and his family? A lunatic who takes joy in the suffering of a cop injured in the line of duty? A lunatic who thinks that not enough of us are killed to justify our salary? The only one advocating any type of violence is you. You are unquestionably insane. You must think I'm almost as dumb as you. I'll tell you what. I'll meet you behind the swing sets after school. This post is actually from Achilles wanting to make up because he knows he won't go through with it. And why do you use arson in everyone of your threatening posts?
And yes Achilles there are other people who think you are overpaid, besides both ce's, there is the Suffolk/Nassau county legislatures, Newsday and Matthew Crosson, the influential head of the LI Business Council who thinks your salaries are "out of control" as well as the majority of LI taxpayers to mention a few.
Doctors and most lawyers make more then cops and deservedly so, because they are not civil servants paid by the taxpayer. They are in the private sector where the market determines pay.
And why do you cops get so touchy when challenged about how dangerous your job is? Why should you care if you police one of the lowest crime counties in the nation and face very little danger. You should be exhalted by the fact you're making more money than any other pd in the nation while working in relative safety.

Because Suozzi did it in Nassau and an arbitrator would be hard pressed to impose it on Suffolk. Remember BA laws; surrounding counties contracts must be considered as well as past contracts.

OOOOOHHHH THATS SOME WAR HES WAGING...LOL.
He could have used that as a bargaining chip when we enter arbitration, this is seperate from our labor contracts, as it is for retired cops as well.

Wow, interesting line of discussion, discuss the same 3-4 lame opinions 100s of times, over a few years, throw in some insults to feel better about yourself, a few shock value statements, to really get some attention, and when someone is gullible enough to answer your post, claim the poster is touchy and it must have struck a nerve.

Wrong as usual, its not part of our contract it is seperate and simply could have ended in 09.It isnt a issue that can be arbitrated. Levy called the pba in and discussed it and within a week it was extended.
Dont believe everything you read. Levy needs the police to be a hardnosed anticrime pol. Of course he wants the public to believe hes fighting against the salaries blahblah, but thats all part of the game....

6) I didn't wish death on anyone, I just said if you are going to use the riskiness of your job as a reason for your pay, then lets see some proof of that.
You are grasping for straws. What I think would be funny is if you associated your real identity with this achilles character and let your bosses see all of your posts, especially the ones where you spoke of raping my wife. You never used that term, but you said you would do sexual things to her. Bng as though she'd never let a loser cop do that to her willingly, that's rape. So stop threatening to rape my wife.

5) I didn't demand anything. I said once for you to post your address, you refused. I then said invite me over and we'll talk. I also said that I know you would get violent and I would let you because it would only make my argument stronger.
Should the name of the previous poster read "achilles therapist" or "achilles the rapist"? ther way it's hilarious!

Thats not true, when your skank slut wife shows up at a different relief point every nite begging pleading and crying for some cop cock.... offering to pay for sex, (after we turn her down for the 100th time) dressed like a common street ho, there is implied consent. YOU cannot speak for your wife ged dropout.
We usually let the vollies drop a train on her ass, I think they film it too, plenty of evidence of her consent. Check her pocketbook for the flavored and rainbow colored condoms.

Carrying on a conversation with yourself again, I see. Your wife? You've already posted that you are unmarried. Obviously not by choice. You simply have not found a proto-human that is willing to spend more than 3 seconds with you. Needless to say, I would not go any where near any semi evolved female that would choose to bed down with you. Again, here you go making up your own "facts" to suit your needs. And responding to your own posts. That is simply pathetic. You're crazy, you're dangerous and you need to be locked away somewhere so that you are unable to harm anyone. Oh, you're also a spineless, powerless, cowardly pussy. Have a nice weekend.

The content of most nof the posts on this thread wirtten by supposed Police Officers is terrible. If you are indeed PO's then you are the very bottom of a very full barrel and I can only hope you are found out. Everyone has a right to an opinion, even the guy who says that SUFFOLK COPS ARE MAKING WAAAYAYYYYY TOO MUCH MONEY!
I agree with those posts, the cops out here make way too much. Currently with gas prices as high as they are, those who drive County cars to and from work are making out quite well.

Post are made here attacking police. They attack thr job, salary, benefits, union, wives, kids, education level etc. What kind of responses do you expect. You attack and they defend, its a normal response. Maybe you should post what you do for a living so they can give you thr opinions.

Because the job titles would read.....
"I drive a ......"
"I am a ........."
"I work for......"
"I deliver........"
"I have a......."
and the last part of each sentence would read......." and I did not get a passing score on the SCPD test !"

Sure. Its ok for trolls to come on here and wish us dead, laugh at cops seriously injured, and threaten to mail fecal matter to his family. You dont say a word about them, and its obvious they are gutter trash.
But if we give it back, all of a sudden a meek sensitive taxpayer emerges for about the quadrillionth time who is "shocked" at the contents. Dont be a hypocrite, if you want to be taken seriously and not as another failed personna here.

Don't you mean you concur with "yourself"? Wishing for terrorist attacks on NCPD Headquarters? Laughing with glee when a cop gets hurt? Wishing for pain, inury and death to LI cops? Hoping that our families suffer? Watching me and my family burn the next time my house is on fire? Responding to your own posts? If that's your definition of sane, then call me crazy.
