Dem voter turnout is horrid. Why??????

The Party has abandoned its liberal core. In the '80s and '90s, the GOP had a successful PR gameplan to turn "liberal" into a dirty word and the Dems turned yellow and tried to be centrist.

But centrist isn't all that inspiring, so why turn out? It's like picking Pepsi vs. Coke -- few people care. It's all cola.

The Dems have to re-define a liberal agenda. Most people ARE liberal, when asked: They are for health care, minimum wage increases, choice, better schools, etc. However, most liberal people don't vote -- conservative seniors do en masse.

The non-voters don't know the true definition of "liberal"; they know the Rush Limbaugh version, so they have no framework to develop thr own personal views. There's no one out there prominently representing a liberal agenda.

In the olden days, when turnout was 80-90 percent (early to mid last century), sweeping liberal reforms took over this country. Turnout now is abysmal, so we get bland politics.

Someone has to inspire the poor and working classes and under-30 crowd to get out there, and it won't be done by running a vanilla agenda.

"Most people ARE liberal, when asked: They are for health care, minimum wage increases, choice, better schools, etc."

Bng in favor of health care, higher wages, choice (properly defined and not just as a euphemism for "abortion"), better schools, etc. are not the exclusive domain of liberals. All of us, both liberal and conservative, want those things for everyone. We just have disagreements on the methods to achieve them. Most people are actually conservative in thr view on actual policies to achieve the common goals. Most people do not believe that bigger government is the most effective means to getting where we want to be.

This is why Democrats are voting less. Thr policies have been failing for decades and they have been left with trying to make personal attacks at thr opponents. More and more, these attacks are also failing. They don't have anything to convince people to vote for, so they don't inspire anyone to vote for them.

We agree then that the Dems are uninspiring.

Liberal or Conservative is about more than taxes and bigger government. Government by its nature is going to tax people as much as possible no matter who's in charge.

Long Island has been ruled by conservative GOPers for years and our taxes are out of control. It ther goes for patronage or services. But taxes aren't going down with ther party.

The GOP was successful in defining liberals as "tax and spend." It's no more true than conservative stereotypes, but the bad-liberal notion stuck. So I do think the Dems tried to avoid such a label -- however they didn't pick a new label.

The Dems aren't going to "out-conservative" the GOP, so I think thr best bet is to try a move in the other direction.

It's product differentiation.

Both Conservative and Liberal ideologies have been around a long time. They both have been proven to win elections at different times in history. I think the voters want politicians to pick a side. Otherwise it's all very boring.

Harry Truman said if people have the choice between copycat Republicans or authentic Republicans, voters would vote for the real thing. For years the Democratic Party has been obsessed with bng "centrist." You can see where it got them in the last election. The problem started when the Democrats sold out to Big Money. It is hard be for working people when you take big campaign
contributions from the same corporate interests you
claim to oppose. The Democrats felt that the needed the big bucks to pay for the TV commercials. For all his popularity within the party, Over all , the voters see the hypocrisy. For all his popularity with in the party, Bill Clinton was the king of fund raising and corporate deal making. He did not even attempt campaign finance reform eg. support for the McCain-Fngold bill.

Oh, where have Centrist P
