Guy for whatever reasons the vollie departments drop motorized racing programs, it has to be dropped. We all know the costs asscoaited with it and this year with fuel pricing rising every day it's gonna be mad crazy. It's in the best interest of the departments and the taxpayers that we put an end to it voluntarily. Hey if we don't then the taxpayers and the towns and counties around NY will do it for us.
We're supposed to be volunteers, we can no longer hold onto racing teams as an R&R tool. Run old fashion, just as much competition and a fraction of the costs.
Bottom line is all the bad stuff that appears about us isn't all true, we know that. But the fact is there are a lot of things that need to be done better, smarter and cheaper.
Look I'm not talking down to anyone, but remember when we were kids and our parents would tell us to clean our rooms or they'd clean them for us. Well fellow FF's we're being told that now, but many of us don't hear it.
If we don't bring about change and clean things up the state and counties will step in and clean things up for us. Unfortunately the botom line is ultimately they'll screw it up also and it will cost a fortune in taxes, but if we don't make a real effort to reform and progress the volunteer service will soon be a thing of the past.
Not puttin down the motorized teams here, just stating the obvious.

These prior posts as well as most of the posts on the Fire Department threads are the exact reason why Suffolk County should go to a paid fire service. Eliminate all of these vollies that race around with the flashing blues lights nearly killing others on the road, eliminate all of the toys and bars and race cars and excessive trucks, eliminate the boys club with all of the chiefs trucks. A paid department would not only be far more professional but also a hell of a lot cheaper as well as providing some much needed jobs for a hurting economy. These different fire departments are like keeping up with the jones. Which department can out do which department. Who has the most toys at the taxpayers expense. I am sure that if the taxpayers ever found out how exactly all of their tax dollars were spent they would be looking to tar and feather someone as well as eliminate volunteer departments once and for all. And please spare me the "volunteers deserve to have a little something for their time". Volunteering means doing without expecting anything in return. Time once and for all to shut down these boys clubs and move to a paid department!!!!!!!!!
how 'bout this

You have hit the nail right on the head. The spending a certain few districts and departments do on motorized racing alone is obscene. I'm not lumping all the drill teams out there together in that statement, because there are some who have to raise a major portion of their funding in order to compete. But there are also the "elite" few who are handed almost anything they ask for, no matter the cost. THEY are going to be a big reason why motorized firematic racing comes to an end. I think it's called "going to the till one too many times". It's more expensive than ever to live here on Long Island, and it won't be long before "Johnny Taxpayer" figures out how much waste there really is with some of these fire districts. Every one sees the racing trucks and trailers, but they don't realize the other expenses that some of these "elite" teams incur. Sickening.
Shame too, because I find racing to be fun. But it's mere existence, and the "fat cats" that "keep on eating when they're full", is going to be the reasons it all comes to an end.

I agree. It would show a good faith to the public if the "speed" teams parked their rigs for this season because of the sky-high cost of fuel on LI. but we all know that wont happen. What will the "summer members" do without "THEIR" piece of the pie.
The we should have, or could have's will all be crying when the government steps in and takes it ALL away.
p.s. I raced for a long time, and still had time for drills, schools, and everything else. I guess times have really changed for the worse. Atleast i'll have my memories.
