Digg Del.icio.us Facebook Fark Google Newsvine Reddit Yahoo Print Reprints Text size: Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy has vetoed a bill calling for an outside consultant to take over the county's nursing home, saying it would lock the county out of pursuing other options like selling the 264-bed Yaphank complex.

But Presiding Officer William Lindsay (D-Holbrook), the bill's sponsor, called Levy's veto "unfortunate," but said he believes he will have the votes for an override at the June 10 legislative meeting.

In his veto message, issued late Thursday, Levy maintained the county will lose from $54-million to $76-million over the next three years and will require county subsidies to keep up operations.

"A number of blue ribbon studies have already done critical analysis of the nursing home and have urged the county to get out of the nursing home business," Levy said.
