Big Brown owners to help son of injured Nassau cop
Big Brown's future in the racing history books remains unclear for two weeks, but the colt's owners are making sure the financial future of a Nassau police officer's son will never be in doubt.

Michael Iavarone and Richard Schiavo announced Friday that they will donate a portion of the thoroughbred's potential Belmont Stakes earnings to help the 6-year-old son of Kenneth Baribault, the police officer injured Sunday when his cruiser was struck by an alleged drunken driver on the Long Island Expressway.

The police officer remains in critical but stable condition at Nassau University Medical Center in Meadow and may undergo another pelvic surgery next week, a hospital representative said.

Iavarone said the donation will "secure the security" of Baribault's son, Christopher, "for the rest of his life."



He declined to say how much would be donated, saying that would be discussed with the family in private. A first-place finish of the Belmont pays $620,000. But after the news conference he added, "We're going to be doing a lot more than Belmont. That's why I didn't want to release [that information]. Because it's not about the money."

Baribault's sisters Danielle Rella and Jennifer Baribault, his son, who donned a purple Nassau County Police Department baseball cap, and the boy's mother, Kendra Sauvola, attended the announcement at Belmont Park but declined to speak. Baribault's parents were with the officer at the hospital.

The event also was attended by Nassau County Executive Thomas Suozzi, Police Commissioner Lawrence Mulvey, Nassau police officers and Big Brown's jockey, Kent Desormeaux, who will wear a Nassau police patch on his uniform during the Belmont Stakes.

Well stated and I would agree. I'm a cop, and I know that the officer who was hurt was early in his career, so he isnt set for life. But it happened while he was working so he will get some type of compensation, in addition to his bills and rehab bng paid. The owners of the horse are exceptional people to think of the family of the officer and to help them.
There are people who are victims of drunk driving who do not have medical insurance, were not working and ther the drunk had little or no insurance or finances to pay the victims bills.

OLD WESTBURY, L.I. -- The police officer nearly killed by an alleged drunk driver on the Long Island Expressway was promoted today. Officer Kenneth Baribault is still in the hospital but his son accepted the promotion. His family also recved a special gift from Big Brown.

Long Island reporter Rob Hoell attended Tuesday's ceremony in Old Westbury.

Still hospitalized, Kenneth Baribault, 30, continues to recover from a severe brain injury after bng slammed into by a suspected drunk driver on the shoulder of LIE last month.

The horrific crash happened just moments after Baribault pulled over another driver suspecting of bng drunk.

At a Nassau County Police promotion ceremony Baribault moved up to the Bureau of Special Operations.

"I'm very proud of him for moving up a level," said Baribault's 6-year old son Christopher.

Also on hand at Tuesday's ceremony were the owners of Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Big Brown, who presented the family with a $50,000 check.

The owners also promised a portion of Big Brown's next purse towards little Christopher's education.
