A Suffolk County police boat sank Sunday afternoon at a Fire Island dock after a mechanical failure caused the hull to fill with water, the police said.

No one was aboard the 38-foot aluminum Marine Bureau boat when it sank at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, moored to the dock at Ocean Bay Park, the police said. The boat sank to the bottom of the bay, with about three feet of the vessel still above water.

The police pulled the boat from the water at around 9 p.m. and towed it to Marine Bureau headquarters at Timber Point.
