View Full Version : We need a paid service

Volleys need to go!

This island is out of control. If we had a paid fire service we would save millions, and taxes would be down all over. So much money gets spent with out anyone to watch over it in who knows how many towns. If we had a paid service that would all change and the tax payers would be amazed at what went on before we had a paid service and be amazed that although we are paying people we are saving millions in tax money!

I have worked in the FDNY for many years and also have been in a few volly firehouses. In the FDNY I have NEVER seen granite or marble countertops in kitchens, bathrooms that look like they belong in a 4 star resturaunt, an endless supply of BOOZE, new trucks that get replaced after they get a scratch, multiple flat screen plasma TV's, a ladder truck for a 20 story building which I have never seen on Long Island! I can only imagine what goes on at the rest of the houses and how much more tax payer money is wasted beyond belief in these firehouses that look like they got a makeover from extreme home makeover. TOP OF THE LINE EVERYTHING!! Please people get involved and look at their budgets. This has to end!

Use it or loose it,,thats what the Departments do. I know a IAFF rep. in the Long Beach FD, one of the few paid guys.

What Tom Gulotta was in Office, the IAFF gave him a presentation on how the County would save money if they went with a paid F.D.

What did Tom The corrupt say to them,,"how many votes will I loose? Forget it"

Thats what it is about,,votes! I spent many years as a Volunteer Fireman and Paramedic, It sucked when I'd be in the back of the bus treating a patient and I knew the driver had a "couple" in him,,but he was the most sober, me, I never went on a call after a drink.

Then you're a moron. NEVER get in a vehicle with a drunk driver... what was that golden rule about making sure you and your crew are safe first?

A good provider and/or officer would always make sure there are people who are sober to handle calls. That's what my department did whenever we had a party.

You have to know to pay for service will save tax payers money. Besides...I think I would rather know I was paying high taxes for professionals...not some guy who is tired from working all day or he is like 65 with a 40 year old beer belly fighting fires. I would rather spend my money on some ones salary and not to stock some ones bar or pay for them and their family to eat drink and be merry. And you all get bent out of shape when this subject comes up because as it was put to me once ....you would be upset if some one took your twinkie away(from a huge asshole fireman...and vollie at that). Grow up and face reality.....its time for a change and a break to hardworking tax payers.....and besides...if you love fighting fires so much and hate leaving your family and friends to make your quota...then get a JOB as a fireman and get paid for it....your arguments over on here over paid and vollies is just unbelievable. Vollies get so bent out of shape over it...and why...you could always become a paid fireman....oh...thats right though..you'll lose your charter club membership paid by the good people of Long Island. You'll also use the excuse that you out protecting while putting your family aside and that is all well and good...but again...then why not do it for money....so hence no argument.

Blame it on the people at the top who continue let the money be wasted. Its THERE time and THERE sacrifice. Its THERE time and THERE sacrifce. Remember that.

Let see. How many fire districts are there on long island? A hundred?? How many commisioners? How many chiefs? How many fire tucks? How many chiefs trucks? Each district provides duplicate service and they each want to have all the toys! With each county havving their own paid fire department this can all be avoided. 2 commisioners, a handfull of chiefs and no duplicate different trucks in every town! All speding will be overseen as a whole and not a hundred different depts to keep track of. This whole system is killing the tax payers!!!

Maybe the county should start with a county wide EMS system. The NCPD cant handle the EMS load and the vollie fire department can't get out anymore in a timly fashion to save anyone.

A paid fire department will cost more then the Police department.

Leave the vollies alone. Even though they are a dieing breed.

Some volly departments already have paid guys called, housemen, lawn maintenance, building maintenance, district employees, fire inspectors, and so on.

Then again on the other hand, I guess having a fire truck at your front door in 3 to 4 minutes is better then 10 to 20 minutes.

OK go paid, you sold me!

Less than a dollar a day is killing the taxpayers? I think the Windex from licking too many windows is killing your brain cells.

Have a clue before you chime in.

The FDs can't get a bus out during the day and the delay is killing people. They hold the call and put it out two or three times before finally transferring it to the county. It can be a half an hour before they decide they can't get to the call. They do this over an over. Why not just pull out of 911? Trying to respond when they know they can't only hurts people.

We need a paid FD, it will be cheaper and maybe someone will actually respond, sober and in a timely fashion.

These incidents happen everyday. East Rockaway, Oceanside, Rockville Centre, East Williston, etc, etc. Simply listen to a scanner and you can hear it for yourself.

It has been going on for a VERY long time that the FDs can't get an ambulance out. Why do you think so many requested dual response? Really they should just drop out of 911. But, most can't even handle their direct calls.

FDNY gets drug tested. Vollies should too. They should get tossed from the FD if they are drunk at the firehouse.

I just looked at my tax bill. I pay $380.00 for the fire portion of my bill. Seems like a bargain to me. Is that a lot? Will it go down a lot from that?

No way... All you are going to get is aging FDNY guys with 15-19 years of service looking to retire here on Long Island. Of course, we will pay their retirement salaries. Do you think the City of New York will care. HELL NO.

Most of the Fire Departments you list here are not primary response agencies. They recieve the calls from 911 because the "paid service", the NCPD EAB didn't have a bus available.

The paid service CANNOT handle the call load now. Plus, the billing is not paying for the service, so us taxpayers will pay in increased taxes and increased medical insurance premiums.

Also, the system needs to be upgraded. While most calls are true calls for help, there are many calls that are merely a free ride to the hospital.
