I drive on Southern State all the time around 80 mph. Rarely ever see a Trooper out there. I'm not insulting the Troopers, I figure they are probably understaffed. If they take over Sunrise and the LIE, it will be like Daytona Speedway out there. I bet you any money that fatals on both roads go up at l 30%.

Highway Regrets . . .
04-01-2008, 03:17 PM
They might "say it every year", but no County Executive has ever requested it in writing before! This is a first boys and girls, and frankly this one aint going away. Add this to the rumors about PIB, Pistol License Section, etc. and we have a lot of people in cushy jobs going back to the precincts soon. This is going to suck.
Every so often the cty supv's from both Counties cry about getting more money from the state to cover the cost. However the truth is that the State Police cannot provide the coverage that Nassau and Suffolk provide.

L.I. has 10 nys troopers assigned to it at any one time. I dont see that increasing. sorry.

Will the State cover HOV and Construction? Who will respond to the PCTs to conduct dwi ( Intoxilyzer 5000 ) tests? Accidents and breakdowns on the E-way and Sunrise? You think the State of New York will pick this up? With what manpower? 50 Troopers will need to be reassigned to Suffolk to just maintain the current level of service. If the County abandons 495 and 27 it will become a real mess. Welcome to your new commute. The good news is you will be able to drive like an ass without fear of getting a ticket

For every 5 County Hwy cop = 1 NYS Trooper. Sorry, but true.
Welcome to your new commute? Yeah, like you guys "help the commute". Lets monitor W/B traffic at 6am so theres a slow down for people trying to get to "real" work...meanwhile E/B is doing 80+ behind your backs. Good job.
Drive like an ass without getting a ticket? I don't think so. Troopers don't take crap. But they're also not brainwashed jerk offs like Hwy, who will ticket thr own mother and others on the job.

The commitment to leave has been made by your apparent pal Steve. No commitment to cover the "roads" have been made by the State.
The reality of what happens during the "drive" seems to be lost on you. I would say that anyone I know would be happy to write the (fairly rare) bound 80's you describe. Thats if they are not already assigned to a breakdown or accident.
Or the fact that Highway Patrol Officers have all been in the Precincts and are good guys and gals who for the most part are helpful to precinct units.
Unregisteredgetrealpiggy on Troopers: they're also not brainwashed jerk offs like Hwy, who will ticket thr own mother and others on the job. Who do you refer to? Be sure of your facts.
The Troopers I have known are no better or worse than other Police Officers and are no more or less likely to take "crap". You can place them on a pedestal if you want. Don't be disappointed if your heros are imperfect.
The last time the Precincts were trained to conduct breath tests there were "problems". Thats why they don't do it anymore.
The State standard for Troopers is something like 1 trooper every 60 miles or so. With 3 or 4 accidents every morning you can expect to wait several hours for your police report.
You might get your wish so be happy

and don't forget, by thr contract, troopers ride double on the midnights which means - 1 car on 495, 1 car on Rt27. great coverage .

You can see there is not a lot of troopers here. As people posting are actually showing them love. After 2-3 months, if they do cover the roads, that'll change. There are troopers who will write thr mothers too.
Right now there is no plan for the state to cover the state roads. They do not have manpower for it. If you heard Tommy terrific he and stevie would also entertain rmbursement or ticket revenue. Thats a little more likely.
whats going to happen, who knows. I do know that the current outside agencies that work in Suffolk area are woefully understaffed, and a high % of thr calls are handled by us anyway. I'd imagine when a accident occurs on the lie and you call 911, scpd is going to end up responding anyway.
Highway isnt going to be disbanded, just reassigned to suffolks highways. All those county roads.
I understand what the dynamic duo are trying to do. I'm all for getting more funds or less work for us. Without sounding condescending, I hope no one gets hurt because they want to play hardball

I was a trooper prior to scpd. We did not get any of the "play nice" training that county cops get. People are not going to be happy with the military, arrogant, 1000 mile stare, attitude the troopers will have. A rookie trooper will make the worst version of scpd highway look like a sweeheart. If you think a trooper wouldnt write his own mother, or yours you are mistaken. Every job has thr share.
Right now there isnt a surplus of troopers available to just plug into L.I. Ask any cop in any li jurisdiction, our communications and thrs are not compatible. Most communication would have to be done by telephone. Additionally there would have to be extensive work to get 911 calls routed to the troopers dispatchers.
This sounds like a game of chicken bng played at taxpayers expense. I hope it works out for the best for LI.

I've been let off of 80mph tickets twice by SCPD highway in the last 2 years. One guy was a d!ck while doing it, but...he still didn't give me a ticket. Good luck with that with State Troopers. As long as you are respectful and don't make up crap stories, you have a chance of bng let go with SC...even without a PBA card.
If you get pulled over by NYPD (they don't inforce traffic much, but when they do)...forget it, ticket is already written before your car stops!!
Also, you will not see as quick response times to accidents.
Come ON !!

A disgrace to the uniform and a scurge on decent people everywhere. The stories of you yokels writing other cops on the way home, writing family members, etc. go on and on forever. You have more enemies within the job than anywhere else.

There shouldnt be more then 1 story of highway cops running wild. 15 highway and a sgt facing charges? Thats a 1/6 of your dept, almost 15% on this one scam. Thats the equivalent of about 200 patrol cops getting busted in one scam...

No problem. You do know that the Sgt. in question was not assigned to 4210 (and if the rumors are true, created even more scandal while still assigned to the Precincts). And the number of POs involved is greatly exaggerated. Knot heads can be found in all commands. You should already know this. To paint everyone in the Bureau with the same brush is more than just a little unfair. Interesting to note that more than 90% of the problems are created by less than 1% of the personnel. This applies county wide.
The "dumbass" comment was just to mirror your post. It was without apparent cause, or justification. In other words it was gratuitous and unnecessary.

Just wanted to rterate that you have no idea what you're talking about. Don't you think a story involving FIFTEEN cops taking from county coffers would be ALL over the news media? Take a look at who got transferred, of those THREE names, only TWO were directly involved in what you speak of, the third is back at his job.
Since you seem to know everything, I guess you know that the sgt in question has a long history of troubles, most of it during his Pct days. Since he got away with so much in the Pct, I really wonder just how squeaky clean it is in patrol.
You were sworn in, not ordained. Quit Preaching.

Lets be honest, the only people going to highway are the ones who are misfits. I was one of the guys forced to hiway from the 2nd class of the 99 test. Who stayed? Losers. The guy with the tranny b/f.
Last year we had a guy in my squad who had seniority but was passed up for 3 cars, which he thought he should have his pick of. 2 of them were filled, one was left open, with him and the rookies rotating through it. He got so fed up he accepted the exiled cope now highway sgt,( who seems to have screwed up some ones personal life. )....to go to highway.

04-04-2008, 10:58 AM
I work in the 4th, we got a guy from Highway last year, the guy was a royal screw up over there, complaints from numerous females about his language, insinuations, etc. The guy is known to have written other cops families from other jobs and more. He finally gets the boot from highway, goes to the 4th and what do our bosses do with him? They have him doing radar, etc. and the guy picked up where he left off in highway. The point is, what do you do with someone who shouldn't be here in the first place? You cant fire somebody for little BS like this, so what do you do? The guy bounces from one place to another until he gets jammed up or the word gets out before he is transferred and he egts banished to whatever spot he's in when the word gets out. So it's not highway or the precincts that are more at fault than the other, it's just the nature of civil service that people like this come along and survive here.

Most of the guys who work highway are ok guys/gals, but there is a quotent of Highway guys that are just so over the top that they make the remaining Officers look like sh!t. I am friends with two Deputies I went to the academy with, one had a Highway guy write his daughter for 1180, talked to my friend on the phone while at the scene and still wrote her, (18 yrs old). The other had his wife stopped by the same highway guy and "detained" for speeding, 20 minutes and no summons. He was actually happy with the no summons outcome but his wife still swears the highway guy was making a pass at her. I don't know what to say about this whole issue except that there are hundreds of 511 speeders in my precinct when I need one. I don't belve there is any reason to write any decent people at all. Write the sh!tbird 511 a whole package, but never write a decent working stiff! Why bother? Unless you get a line of sh!t or the person is completely disrespectful, I find no reason to write - as long as they know what they did wrong. Whatever>

And this is why so many of the top 10 deadliest roadways in NY are in Suffolk County. If nobody wrote summonses, there wouldnt be any 511's, would there? The "working stiff" that speeds down the block is just as likely to kill somebodys kid as anyone else.
Do you also let shoplifters go as long as they know what they did was wrong? What about CPCS 7Th? Is that ok as long as they're sorry?
Does EVERY person that gets stopped deserve a utt? No, we all have those days, but to only write 511's is the other extreme and serves no one but the cop who is too lazy or scared to go to TVB.

I love it when you Suffolk County guys talk sh!t about CPCS 7th, and other very petty crimes like it's a major drug collar you "have to" make, BS. You DO have discretion on petty offenses, even that big ol' CPCS 7th you know. I also get a kick out of your NEED to write the common joe who passes a stop sign etc. Yeah, the guy who just tore down a residential street could kill a kid too, But, he's actually far less likely to kill anyone than someone who is currently 511. That's right out of the Highway enforcement handbook joker. In addition, your asertion that ANY cop would be "too scared to go do V&T is so absolutely stupid I wont comment. This is just the usual, "we're better than everybody else because we make more money". Not so, the best cops are still here in the city working hard. They are not the best for any other reason than because they are forced to be 8-10 X more experienced than you within three or four years on the job. Not your fault, but please - just shut up!

I also get a kick out of your NEED to write the common joe who passes a stop sign etc. Yeah, the guy who just tore down a residential street could kill a kid too, But, he's actually far less likely to kill anyone than someone who is currently 511.

Hey mister tough guy, who ever said CPCS 7th was worth the sweat off our nose? I worked the precinct which has Wyandanch for 24 years. They still process 1,000 arrests a month. That's without any ADA holding our hand and aiding in processing. With Suffolk's population of over 1 million in the western townships and only 7 precints, I always wondered why NY needs dozens of precincts with just 8 million population. Suffolk residents are getting more bang for the buck through efficiency. Then you suggest no discretion with stop signs. That's like me saying your recruitment unit picks up clowns from JFK's Immigration Terminal. With 3 yr detectives no wonder why you've lost credibility with all your nghbors. Every year we see more CCRBs from city cops who think they're somebody. The free test and open filing didn't help any ther. I read in the NYPD Rant about city cops wiping thr noses on bathroom walls. Lots of pride there in the great job.
You have a roll call man? We don't even have roll call. If you're so smart, then why so miserable? Have a nice commute. Maybe study next time for a test, cause you're shot.

Couldnt have said it better.
When and where did he get cps7 as a big deal? I could do a check point at most high schools and get half the student body with cps7. And the staff too.
I wouldnt be so quick to brag about letting a person committing a crime go, imagine how the people you are supposed to serve and protect finding out the guy you caught with a little bundle of rock today and let go, because you are too cool a cop to do anything turns around and sells 20 bundles to thr 12 y/os.
But thats the difference between many city cops and us. You talk a lot about arrests and calls, you just dont make them. I dont blame you, every arrest you dont make is one less potential ccrb.
You forget, many guys out here spent some time in there. You can talk about the real crimes and drugs all you want. All the real arrests you could make, could. But at the end of the year, a seasoned city patrol cop will have 10-15 arrests, most of them for 511 and domestic assault or vop.
Out here a rookie cop with zero prior will have that, plus at l 10 more.
Big deal? no. Just the difference between a dept thats scared to do anything ( and face a disciplinary action) and one who just does it. Thats why you are posting here about the "real job" you do.

There's nothing more comforting for a cop in knowing that he has a partner sitting next to him. This isn't just for safety, but also to get things done expeditiously. Suffolk cops don't have that luxury. We collar up by ourselves, we don't involve a supervisor cause we don't see him for a week at a time, and we transport and process by ourselves. There's no ADA holding our hand or central booking to share duties.
No matter how much courtesy we extend to other depts, there is always some miserable city cop talking trash about us.

How about this; in the last 25 years has there ever been 1 Nassau/ Suffolk cop switch over to the city? They don't want to work with whiners like yourself.
Any truth to the rumor that Nassau has backed out of the showdown over who patrols the highway? I heard they will remain on the Big Road as a result of wording in thr contract...

Potential for patrol shortage on LIE, Sunrise

ALBANY - The State Police doesn't have enough officers to patrol the Long Island Expressway and Sunrise Highway if Nassau and Suffolk counties go ahead with thr threatened pullout of the county highway patrol, the new State Police superintendent said yesterday.
Harry Corbitt, who was confirmed yesterday as the first African American to head the State Police, said its Long Island contingent was the smallest in the state and couldn't immediately take on more road patrols.
"Where do the troopers come from, where would they live," Corbitt said. "We wouldn't be able to do it if it happened tomorrow. We don't have the resources to accommodate."
Corbitt's comments were in response to a question posed by Sen. Carl Marcellino (R-Syosset) during a confirmation hearing. Marcellino expressed concern about traffic safety if Nassau Executive Thomas Suozzi and Suffolk Executive Steve Levy pull thr respective highway patrols in response to state budget cuts adopted last week.

And without Civil Service what would the makeup of the PD look like?

Yes, first we will have to wake the sleeping marine bureau cops, then find the ones that are out driving around in the cars to 7-11, get them to the boats, and get them out on the water. You dont have a clue, do you? There is no cut, no reduction in police or police budget. Its about making the state ther patrol thr roadways like everywhere else, or compensating l.i. for the local police doing the state's work. If anyone thinks its more then just a ego blow to scpd, they are kidding. Its not going to affect thr rank and file other then bng reassigned.
Someone else stated that there will not be any reduction in taxes, and they are correct. There are no cuts in services by scpd. And in the long run, there will be additional taxes, as the state now has to reassign troopers, and state civilian employees. I'm not sure how the 911 system works, but I'd imagine ther the 911 dispatchers now will have to reroute calls on state roads to state dispatchers, or something to that effect. That means a longer wait for service. There were almost 6000 accidents last year. That means the state has to increase thr workforce.
The good for the public, more county police assigned to county roads. The bad for the police, 1 less detail. Less job security. But the reality is there is job security without patrolling state roads.

Horseshit. There are only 300 deputies, and they ride double, just like the troopers, as opposed to alone like scpd. Do the math base salary of 2 deps, at 85k (not including o/t) vs 1 scpd (110?)

Wrong again. WE ALWAYS ride double when working. We have about 20 recruits, but about 7 retirees since the last class, and a bunch of sgts and special detail promotions, I'm thinking about 15, so its a push .

Sadly since the accident was handled by another officer, I couldnt file a report on thr behalf, I advised them to call the officer and request a mv104. Troopers have about 2 miles of the extreme end of the LIE and have rt. 27 of CR 111...and they alwys have. Balboni, who may or may not have the authority to make this deal, has stated that the troopers will assume duties on lie and 27 w/ no additional staffing to the overall number of state police. So insteasd of at L 8 suffolk cops ready to respond at any given time, (usually more) you will probably have 2 or 4 troopers responding. And when the snow falls or theres a really bad mva, you will be SOL if you need a cop. Its a bad idea all around, and LEvy and Balboni don't care that the public is bng left unprotected and under erved.

Normally, yes. Its dependant on the type of incident. If its a crime, it has to be written up by the investigative dept. If its a mva requiring a state mv104 likewise. But non-criminal, non-litigious types of incidents, that occurred on a state road, can be written by us. I think, thats the way it used to be when I worked the sector that has Stonybrook campus. I'm sure the dept will have guidelines worked out soon.
It is going to take a significant amount of calls off the patrol section.

If it is under $1000.00 and there are no injuries or tow NO MV104A is required, unless asked for by the parties involved. I guess the State follows that, but they also issue UTT's at an accident scene without witnessing same. The insurance company wants a report? Oh well. Maybe Stevie will have civilian do it.

Thats the issue the person wanted a 104a and was talked out of it,on scene by the trooper. He flat out told them he doesnt do one unless he thinks there was 1000 of damage(no injuries involved).
Now the insurance company wants a report and a case number, the troopers arent cooperating.
Then they come to us,(I'm Riverhead pd)and we cant help them. The involved parties have to drive out to the barracks to get anywhere. If all troopers are going to do this, its going to be a nightmare for the taxpayers.....

Lil Stevie will not get his way,no matter how long he stamps his feet and cries, and holds his breath.
The state wants no part of the big road. They know it probably is too much to handle. No offense to the troopers, it just wont be staffed properly and they will be overwhelmed.
Richie D will take the fall. Lil Stevie will blame him for bad info, and promote richie p to commish.
Notice how Tommy boy in Nassau is backing way way off from lil stevie.
Wants no part of this train wreck.

There arent any spare troopers lying around to take over highway on the island. The state has repeatedly advised they will not pull troopers out of areas where they serve a patrol function to supplement our county highway patrol, because Levy has a bug up his ass.
There is a trooper class that just left the academy a few months ago, and there is no current plan for a new class within this year. The state is not going to give in because its going to set a precedent. Who is going to bully them into patrolling what next? Think about how many state roads there are on the Island, 25,24,25a,25b, 24a, 27, etc etc etc.

not likely, because 1. they will then get PERB or whatever its called for doing the same job -so a big raise for them isnt what the little gu(a)y wants
2. they have less people than the troopers

Ignore it, apparently when you answer a attention seeking troll once, for the next few weeks he will repeatedly post the same crap, over and over and over. Its hard to screen a initial post and determine if its a waste of time(like this guy), or worth discussing.

Sherriffs would perpetuate the problem levy is trying to solve. No - it'll be the state or the pd, and the state will decide the matter, not the counties.
There has been a lot of talk about governors and executives in this debate - but legislators hold the purse strings

Wont work that way, if highway is disbanded, and there are 911 calls from the lie, patrol will handle them.

the old Sunoco-colored cars
Frayler calls the LIE and Sunrise two of the most dangerous roads in the State. How can this be when we have the highest paid cops in the world patroling them?
Sounds to me like moving to responsibility to the State is a smart move for that reason alone.
SCPD has failed. Bring in a relief agency!

Hey chum-The reason for fatalities bng up has nothing to do with salary. You can put the blame where it belongs...Levy and Dormers downsizing as population grows. There was a time when Rt 495 had 9 patrol cars. Now there are 5. Levy wants 3 and that is exactly what the Troopers will give us. ther way we're paying whether it's to the county or the state. It is also in the Trooper contract that they must have 2 man cars after 11PM. So you tell us where the savings is. Levy just wants to get it off HIS budget and does not give a rats a$$ about the public's safety. When will u wake up?
U R CLUELESS

Its not just the LIE and 27...in 2006 Suffolk led all of NY State in vehicle fatalities and injuries. Nassau was 2nd.
its not the cops, its the drivers, congestion and roadways.

Dmv and drivers ed has failed. L.I. drivers are reknown for thr lack of driving skills, courtesy and intelligence behind the wheel.
What you are saying is that cops have failed to stop people from speeding driving recklessly and carelessly...well who are those people? Is there anyone here who doesnt commute? Most of us are supposedly driving with a license, sober, and in a vehicle that passes all the tests needed to be on the road.
Yet your statement is exactly the same you would post for a area bng hit by criminals stealing, robbing etc...you may or may not realize but that is what your comparison is saying. That people without big brother watching, will break the law and act in a criminal manner. If that is true then the problem isnt the police, its you.

Get real. patrol is patrol, u drive one way, turn around drive the other. The issue is manpower. If you see a trooper, by the coliseum, on nsp you are clear to Suffolk. If you pass a trooper on a accident, likewise. If the state is really shortchanging suffolk by 3-4 cops per tour, oh boy!!

Elmont man charged in street race that left driver dead
A driver involved in a race on a residential street in Elmont that left the other driver dead in a crash was bng held on $1 million bail, authorities said.
Jose Desilva, 38, had his 2-year-old son with him in the race on May 1 that killed Jeffrey Jean Louis, 27, of Queens Village, Nassau police said.
At an arraignment hearing Friday morning, a judge ordered Desilva held on $1 million bond, or $500,000 cash. As of Friday afternoon, Desilva had not posted the bail. The name of an attorney for Desilva could not be immediately located.
Desilva, of Elmont, was arrested Thursday night and charged with reckless endangerment, leaving the scene of an accident with serious physical injury and endangering the welfare of a child, police said.
Desilva, in his Lexus, was racing against Jean Louis at 5:15 p.m. on Dutch Broadway when Jean Louis lost control of his 2004 Mitsubishi and hit a tree at the corner of 238th Street, police said. He was pronounced dead an hour later at a hospital.
Nassau homicide detectives arrested Desilva, of Lghton Road, at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in connection with the fatal accident.

Nah, he lost to the state. The offer of manpower was too low. It seems Levy is ok cutting his highway but wanted more from the state. Anyway he will get compensation.
