Do the chiefs in Nassau and western Suffolk have any idea how inappropriate it is to wear a white dress hat at the scene of an MVA or a fire? It is certainly a wonderful message that they are sending to the members: Wear your turnout gear, but I don't have to because I'm too important. Get with it chiefs, helmets and turnout gear for action scenes and dress hats for parades and installations - it is not that difficult to remember.

Why should the IC (chief) wear gear, he is suppose to be outside at the command post at all times. The white hat lets everyone, from police, utilities, etc, who the person in charge of the FD is.

That is one of those things that make us look like a$$hole$. The Chief in shorts, sandles, "the wife beater shirt", radio straped on and of course the white Class A on. You have PPE wear it. It serves two functions, first to protect you, and second to make look professional. I know the example is extreme but I have seen it more than I could count for myself besides what I see in Buff newspapers. Besides anyone that is on the fire ground is suppose to have there gear on. Nothing looks better than the Chief being interviewed by the news (or photos in the paper) with a white helmet and all his gear on (thats professional).

Where does it say that?
Here's an example: large commercial fire, weather is sunny and 90 degrees, now you tell me that it makes sense for the chief to be in full turn out gear for the duration.

I heard the Class A thing is a tradition, which is cool but, it's a impractical thing to do?! It's a Chief's job to be a leader...and God forbid especially being first due that they might have to make a grab or do any fire function that calls for them to gear up...the Chief should have at least the bunker pants with boots and his white CHIEFS helmet! The Chiefs look like jollie vollie clowns when they wear the class A hat out of uniform like that! I work for a great Chief in Gordon Heights F.D and he expects everyone from the Chief down to do the right thing starting with the gear! A Chief is still a firefighter and like I said if he is hot then he can dress down which is understandable(I've ran scenes in the summer) but at least do a 360 with gear or his size up with pack and gear like my GHFD and MIFD Chiefs do and at minimum just being the professional is key also!
Our S.O.G's state that everyone on a firematic alarm shall donn their bunker gear...so that's the first written guideline/rule and I'm not sure of the NFPA guidelines but,the District insurance also states the same so,even if the Chief ends up helping with flaking out hose or whatever if he gets hurt he will be questioned hard and possibly denied coverage!

Hey Jeff ...
If our Chief has to "Flake" hose .... and not have his head in the game as the IC, then maybe our department needs to hire some firefighters to take over the vollies job, just like they have done to run our EMS calls !
