I'm glad to see that the Commack Chief's vehicle was in Bellport tonight parked in front a Ruby Tuesdays. Wonder how many beers or drinks were put away tonight? Glad to see that tax payer money was being put to good use by paying for the fuel that powered that vehicle all the way to Bellport.

Glad that vehicle is being put to good use if there's an actual emergency in Commack. Way to go Commack Chief!!!

It's not a matter of annoying the person or persons that are driving the vehicle. It's a matter of that person annoying the general public for his/her lack of respect for the community in which they are supposed to be serving. Explain how the Commack Chiefs vehicle is benefiting the people of the Commack EMS district by sitting in front of a Ruby Tuesdays in Bellport? My guess would NONE!! Try taking your own damn car or SUV out to dinner or to work for that matter. It's just a waste of, although minimal, public tax dollars.

enough already!

Each district/department has their own rules about Chiefs vehicles. If the Chiefs are following those rules, then fine. Many departments allow the Chiefs to use the vehicles at all times as long as they stay within a certain area (for many it is Nassau/Suffolk, others it's anywhere in state, etc).

As it has been said many times before, if you don't like the rule, then discuss changing it with your local district/department board. Get some supporters and start a petition. Complaining about it here won't do a damn thing.

How about the guy who has been a chief for close to 10 years, and brings "his" truck to Yaphank for work everyday. He doesn't even have his own car. Talk about bending the community over and giving it to them.

If he's been a Chief for the last 10 years in a Ambulance Company he deserves to drive the Chief's vehicle wherever he wants!

OK, so you're complaining that the Chief took his truck out of district to have dinner. Then you complain about the Chiefs who take their trucks to work...(which by the way is totally legal and permissable).

Lets break this all down. Lets say the Chiefs werent allowed to take their trucks to work or more than, lets say 5-10 miles outside of district boundaries. How much would the taxpayers really save????

Lets use the Commack Cheif, who works in Yaphank as an example:

Commute to work: Approx 20 miles each way. 40 miles total
Days commuting: 5 days a week
Total miles driven to work each week: Approx 200 miles
Total miles driven per year: 10,400 miles.
Subtract 2 weeks vacation and 3 days Sick: 9880 actual miles driven to work.

Now, take that number (9,880 miles), multiply by the current gas price (which was way less last year), $3.70/gallon.

Total cost of fuel (at the highest average), is $36,556. This number is actually less because the price of fuel hasnt stayed the same all year, it was significantly less. Even still, lets use this number...just to prove a point!

The following data is taken from the following website: http://money.cnn.com/magazines/moneymag/bplive/2007/snapshots/PL3617530.html

Taken from a census of Commack, NY in the year of 2007, there are approximately 38,000 people who live in Commack. Lets say there's an average household of 4 people. You now have somewhere around 9,500 actual taxpayers.

Now, take the $36,556 "wasted" in gas and cut it out. Divide that money up to the approx 9,500 tax payers.
That leaves a grand total savings to each taxpayer of $3.84.

Its probably even less than that, considering the municipal price of fuel being cheaper and a few less days at work, etc.

**So, how 'bout I give you $4.00, so you can shut the "F" up and quit complaining! Keep the change!

Your math is probably good, but I dispute your logic. Is is OK to take 2 cents from every bank account in the country? It is only 2 cents, after all. I promise to give the 2 cents back to anyone who figures it out and complains. I think the point is that chief's are leaders and chief's cars are very visible to the public. Some discretion is advised...

I thinks the truck gets better than 1 mile a gallon so the total fuel cost is closer to $2000 not $36000.

I_stand_corrected
04-27-2008, 05:57 AM
I stand corrected, good point! I totally overlooked that part.

Ok, so lets say the SUV gets 10 miles/gallon (probably slightly better than that).

So, 9,880 miles divided by 10 equals 988 gallons of fuel.
Multiply that by 3.70 and you get $3,655 for fuel.

Divide the $3,655 of "wasted fuel" amongst the approx 9,500 taxpayers, and you get $0.38.

So, each taxpayer that doesnt like it, can complain about their 38 cents going to waste each year.

*I like that number much better.

**To go even further, lets say the average taxpayer buys a house at the age of 25 and they live and pay taxes in Commack until the day they die. Lets use the age 85 as the average. So, thats 65 years of paying taxes.

***If the "wasted fuel" wasnt "wasted", that would save the average taxpayer about $24 in their entire lifetime (over approx 65 years). Looking at the stats for Commack, the average household makes over $100,000. I think the 38 cents a year wont break their banks!

Why don't you just get another job and earn you own gas money instead of taking in from the taxpayers? You try to justify the theft since you are only wasting a "small" amount of money on yourself. Probably don't pay taxes on this freebie either, I bet.

Chief's cars for AMBULANCE chiefs are a total waste of money. There is no scene size-up like fire chiefs. Fire chiefs are in charge of big MVAs. People who call 911 for an ambulance need an ambulance. They don't need a responder and they don't need a chief. Real EMS agencies that do this for a living do not have all these cars and certainly do not routinely send responders to the scene. Quit serving yourself and start thinking about the community!

The difference is that you don't see FDNY boss vehicles at a restaurant way outside the city. You won't see any private ambulance boss vehicles because they don't need them at all. Only in Long Island do we convince ourselves that a chief's SUV way out of district has any possible benefit to someone who calls 911 with an emergency.

you sir, are a tool. I've worked and still do work in a lot of different departments and the fire chief might be at the scene of that big mva wearing his shiny white hat, but its always been the emt or medic taking care of the pt that called the shots. Sure the chief or capt. gets to tell the trucks where to go and where to spread speedy dry, but not a post gets cut or a door popped unless the medical personnel states that it needs to be. I've always had a good on scene rapport with the firemen in the different places I work and not a window was popped unless I deemed it necessary. Once the pt was out I could care less what they did to that car.

That Commack has not only and AMBULANCE CO. But A Fire Dept too!!! Sooooo to the Mathmatical poster........Change your numbers you have at LEAST 3 Chiefs out of the FD and at least 2-3 Chiefs out of the Ambulance!!! Dependant on how they run their Boards!!! DO THAT Math!

Here is a good solution for the Chiefs car problems. Buy 1 marked Chief car and keep it at EMS Quarters (never use it just so you keep the public or PUBICS happy) and buy unmarked Chiefs cars so nobody would know where they are and what they are doing. See situation resolved. Enjoy you dinner Chief and keep up the GREAT job....Oh and by the way...THANK YOU and your MEMBERS for getting up at 3am in January to pick up some complaining bitch resident who can't understand why she has a REALLY bad headache... But the bottle of wine she had with dinner had ABSOLUT..ly nothing to do with it.

OK, retard! You want me to do the math huh? I guess its kinda difficult to multiply the 38 cents by however many Chiefs cars there are. And that would have to imply that every single fire chief and ambulance chief works in yaphank 5 days a week.

The FDNY EMS Chief Officers and Medical Directors are indeed allowed to take their vehicles home, because they are required to do a certain number of on-call off hour shifts, etc. The SUV's are driven by field supervisors only while on duty.

While were on the topic, you may also want to consider that Ambuance Corps run on average three times the amount of alarms as their fire-only counterparts. Barring a few exceptions throughout LI. So that very same responder vehicle to which you refer (being 10 years old itself) has seen more "jobs" and done more "scene assessment" than the very same fire depts vehicles (which are also routinely replaced at less than five years).

That staemnet is completely incorrect. 1) FDNY EMS bosses do get vehicles and do take then out to dinner, sporting events, etc... The only diffrents is that they have specific rules they must follow when using a city car/SUV. The departments out in suffolk and nassau may have diffrent rules, but as long as the chiefs follow them then there shouldn't be a problem. If you have a problem with a departments policy then write a letter to the board of comm. or the directors and ask them to make a change and ask for a written response. 2) "Private Ambulances" bosses do have cars; Transcare, EAS, Hunter and Life Star, there senior manigers have vehicles.

Okay, sorry you tool bag, it's in Medford. Close enough to Bellport. If the chief of Commack EMS wants to eat at a Ruby Tuesday's, there is one that is located in Commack. How about staying in your own district with the vehicle.

There is a complete and total disregard for the use of vehicles. There is absolutely no reason that a Chief vehicle should be used to go back and forth to work, or to eat, or to shop. It is an emergency vehicle and should only be used as such. Not a personal vehicle. I don't give a rat's a** how long a person has been in the EMS company or the Fire Dept. The car or SUV should only be used what it is intended for.......emergencies......not shopping or going to work.
