View Full Version : Rising Fuel Costs

Outraged Taxpayer

Now that expenses are on the rise and fuel costs have hit an all time high why do we still need to have these race trucks. You say its for training but you have to get the regular trucks out first. Just as Corams 51 about that?

Right on, racing trucks not only use a lot of fuel.they use very expensive racing fuel!!!!!!!!!

Hmmm, diesel for fire apparatus, oil for heating fuel, or fuel for racing? Whats the priority?

Firemen may pay taxes, but it doesnt justify wasting (Y)OUR dollars on RACING trucks with no firematic value.

Serving your neighbor and family to the best of your ability should be enough incentive to volunteer.

Some people don't sit online all day watching "fat cunt porn", as you so well put it. They sit in firehouses and watch it there. With a few beers, making them too inebriated to respond. That's right, they do anyway.

Or they may be "serving" their community on racing trucks. Go "drill" in Old Bethpage or Yaphank. Unlike racing (oops. DRILL trucks), you might actually learn something.

Is there a minimum on the BAC (Blood Alcohol Content) I may need to join Riverhead FD? Or any for that matter?

Sorry dude but I'm a vollie also, I have almost 20 years in and to be hnest the days of the racing teams have come and gone. It's time to face reality, racing teams cost money that people just don't have. If it's a choice between racing teams and training, say bye bye to the C & B rigs. If it's a matter of better radios or safety ropes, I say can the race teams and the parades.

Let's face it the economy is a huge shit sandwich and we're all gonna have to take a bite. Trust me we need the taxpayers as much as they need us and I say if the parade pieces and drill teams annoy them, then they gotta go. Nothing personal dude but you should have joined to be a vollie and we both know that race teams have zero to do with training.

If we the Vollie Departments don't chnage the way we do certain things then eventually someone will change them for us and we may not like the outcome.

Racing was cool in itd day, but its time has passed. Way too expensive to fund anymore.

Fuel really isn't the issue. Funding is. I've not seen anyone ask where funding for FD racing comes from. Some thoughts on the subject.

Some of the rigs were built before most members were born. Mechanical work is probably done by members by moon light. No fiematic value? I have to beg to differ. Maybe the skills seen are extreme however they root in reality. They bring comraderie. They BUILD Teams! Not just a race team but teams that go into harms way to save life and property. They train side by side and basically know the skills of each other.

Let them have fun. Let the games begin, er-eh continue. This activity brings people together and brings some fun into the lives of others. If tax dollars are not wasted and personal bonds are formed I believe it's worth it.

Sure the hey day is over but not forgotten.

One good point, the rest is funny.

A pat on the back for those that do their own repairs. Or don't race because their board won't pay for it with taxpayers dollars. I've seen apparatus sit in a bay needing repair while a racing truck gets fixed. His answer? "We have 3 more engines to respond with." Maybe not your dept, but a lot of others.

But save me the rest. Been around too long to see that teamwork on a fireground. Many depts. carry members who just race and you never see on a fireground.

Cameraderie and teamwork shouldn't cost hundreds of thousands of dollars of taxpayers money. Soaring diesel and fuel oil for the apparatus and houses are going to take a big enough chunk out of budgets this year.''

Run old fashioned. Teamwork and cameraderie without raping the taxpayers.

What department are you with that's raping the taxpayers? Shame on you!

Your comments are just a valid as mine. I guess that makes them funny too. Amazing thing about the internet huh.

Sorry I may be wrong about the funding. I can't speak of present day activities. I was really hoping for someone to provide an answer that had substance to it. Not just I know of... I know of a lot of crap like that too. I can't substantiate it. If there is a department spends hundreds of thousands of dollars on a race team they deserve to be banished. I would really like to see data to support your statement.

Please don't forget my quote wich is not funny
" If tax dollars are not wasted and personal bonds are formed I believe it's worth it". I guess you missed when reading.

Certainly I am not for wasting tax dollars. The area I am in my rescue unit is neither tax supported nor a government function. Pure volunteer. We have trouble surviving as we are donation dependent.

Look I am not ridiculing anyone. Just commenting and looking for info.

Thanks for the belittlement.

I didn't miss it. Looks like you missed the line where I commended teams that run on their own. Go to firehouse.com and read about LI's fire service. Read about Islip spending $250,000 in 3 years on their team. (type Newsday in search. Make sure the search is on firehouse.com and not google.)

Did you read Snoozeday recently where Farmingville's Commisioners voted down paid EMS but bought a new $50,000 racing toy, and to spend $260,000 more to redo their "lounges"? Fire depts were formed to put their respective communities needs first. The above contradicts it.

Yes, like you and many others, I seen, I heard, etc etc.

But your teamwork remark was funny. Some of those guys you never see on a Class "A" rig, but never miss a run with a "B" or "C" rig. Their "teamwork" never leaves the track, since you know "B" and "C" toys don't go to fires. And depts tolerate it. If you feel thats belittling, oh well.

Reminds me of a time awhile back I heard FDNY Battalion Chief John Salka speak at a seminar. He lives upstate, and mentioned 2 depts near him that received grant money.

One dept built a training center. The other redid their "lounge". I know what town I'd rather live in.

Shame of it is, many depts and corps like yours in and outside this state would love to see the money mentioned above that was wasted. I've seen them. Especially with diesel hitting $4 a gallon and rising. Last thing they worry about is $8-10 a gallon Cam 2 for racing.

And what could your "donation dependant" dept do with almost $600,000 that was wasted here in the data you requested?

I could only imagine.

Thanks for the response. Unfortunately from distance I will not see everything you do right there. Your last post was a bit more detailed than the first. I really appreciate the information. Especially pointing me to references.

I was not trying to be funny. I have a hard time believing that those charged with the reponsibility for the preservation of life and protection of property allow that service to deteroriate in while extravagance and expensive recreation continues in their charge. It sounds like the politicians on LI need overhaul as much as the FDs.

As far as reading the Snoozeday or other papers I can not say that I do. I've been disappointed by the papers because more often than not the stories are slanted. Somewhere between the endpoints lies the truth. Unfortunately the truth is difficult to find.

As far as FD Racing my dad and my grandfather built a truck many years ago. What class I can't remember. I remember watching the hose teams drill. These were the same guys that were on the lines in the line of duty.

With regard to my squad yes 600K would go a long way. 60K would go a long way. 6K wouldn't hurt either.

I apologize for getting angry. I just made an innocent comment unaware of abuses that you've pointed out. As ar as the teamwork and comraderie comment Several other posts I've read in other forums the "drill teams" consisted of regular members and officers. I can't argue to keep a ball player or racer on the rosters just because they are good at that. They need to be regular members serving in the same capacity as everyone else, being a volunteer ff first and foremost.
Thanks agin.

No apologies needed. Just hearing (other) people justify this waste is what makes it worse. Sounds like you have been off the island for awhile.

Like you, my dad also raced. But with the economy getting worse, members of depts with teams have no problems with wasting money. While it may be "their" tax dollars, not every cent is. And Fire Commissioners elected are usually firemen as well, so nothing changes.

And when our dads joined, it was an honor. Today, it's what do I get out of it. Also a problem with society, so not as much a problem unique to the volunteer fire service. And "volunteers" have justified this waste with how they get up at night, and they can stay home when your house burns. As posted earlier, many of them already do.

While Setauket and Lindenhurst voted down new firehouses at $13.9 and 7.5 million, resepectively, no doubt firehouses are needed more than racing teams. Granted, Setauket has no racing team and Lindenhurst does. But taxpayers have spoken, and the volunteers will suffer. Lindenhurst HQ was built in 1923, and the rigs have gotten too big for that house.

Maybe its time more people took the time to get involved in their fire districts affairs, and know the difference between a "drill' team, and a racing team (none). Maybe volunteers should step up and build their own firehouses. Sounds crazy, but it has been done before. They don't need palaces. Basic and simple (Relax, people, I know it won't happen).

But having room to store apparatus , and room to safely put on gear is a priority. Racing toys arent. And it looks like fuel may go much higher. If Joe Taxpayer has to tighten his belt to stay afloat, then it's time to sell the toys. And maybe put that money towards a new firehouse, which is much more important.

And you are correct, Newsday is not always right. But not always wrong.

Who paid for the insurance on all your racing only vehicles? I'm sure it was covered under the umbrella for the district, it still costs a lot.

Who paid the Workers Comp for the racing team? Again, covered by the district, but would be a lot less if there was no racing team.

As a previous poster said, why not just go to Old Fashioned Drill Teams. Way way cheaper.

How sad that because you are so frustrated being raped by oil companies who are the ones charging the $3.50 a gallon that you take your frustrations out on vollies. People are mad at what they can't control, heating their houses and taxes so they aim at who they think are having fun. Try aiming at those 4 billion a year CEOs not the "I get up in the middle of the night to take your 80 year old mom to the ER vollie." All the FD dept waste combined wouldn't add up to 1% of what we are getting raped by big oil, pharmacueticals etc. But it's so easy to attack neighbors who are real. Spend this time demanding that our do nothing politicians deal with these real money issues not the petty crap you are complaining about here.

Yea, government never does. Of which a fire district is part of.

So it's ok to waste money on racing because it is still cheaper than a paid service.

Waste is waste. Did you miss that chapter in the economics book u want us to read?

If you really think that your local tax burden will be less by getting rid of racing you are just wrong. Like I said last night government never does anything cheaper. As for waste.....Look at your tax bill when you get it in a few weeks. Then we can talk about waste. Believe me Putting more people on the payroll is not the answer. Large scale tax reform for all of long island is the answer starting with the school. Which is over 50% of my tax bill. There has been talk for years about changing the structure of the local school system. There is your waste. Talk about duplication of services. School buses from 3 towns pass through my neighborhood every morning.

So even if racing fuel went to $20 a gal nothing would change. How about this? Come by our racing tent and we will give you a free burger and wash it down with a cold one...On us......You won't get that from the your local town government now will you?????

Yes, I own my own business and I pay the one employee (me) as well as a I can. 80 hours/week is about right.

I can agree unions have gotten very greedy, but not all. But look up where I broke your balls about Wal-Mart. It's ok for the family to make billions a yr, but pay the employees crap? Might be capitalism, but unions have negotiated wages, pensions and other benefits so you didn't make pennies a day working 100 hours a week.

You pay a decent wage, you can get decent workers. Politicians lowered the standards for civil service jobs, not the unions.

I fully support unions. Where/when did I state otherwise?

Pension after a puny 20 years? You are an asshole. I'd have you ask a pal of miine, Suffolk County Police Sgt. Timothy Henck what he thought of your asinine remarks, but he was killed line of duty on the LIE in "safe, secure Suffolk County".

Even with City time, he never saw 20 years. So Fuck you.

Again, what does Henck have to do with anything? Your inability to stay focused makes it difficult to converse w/you. What's your point w/this comment? Do you think you're the only one who has lost a friend or family member while serving in a honorable role? Who gives a rats ass what Henck would think of my opinion? Are you suggesting we lower the number of years required to retire? Again, I don't know what point you're trying to make here.

BTW I volunteer out of the kindness (not kindest) of my heart as well.

You can't even use English properly. You must have failed a few tests, I'm certain.

Wow, you caught a misspelling. I guess you think that makes you a genius? It doesn't. And what tests are you talking about? Again, more senseless dribble.

I wonder what's worse. Your ignorance or your stupidity. If they ever go paid out here, you would probably fail that test too.

You make the assumption I have failed some test in the past. What test are you speaking of? If they go paid, I may or may not apply but I'm guessing those w/a greater number of years of service would get the first offers. But if there were a test I'm sure I would do fine. I'm a college grad, an EMT, blah blah blah. How hard can the 'test' really be?

But thanks for volunteering out of the "kindest" of your heart.
You're welcome.

But glad you would let the place fall apart just so you could get a job. Don't we all need to work to make a living? Oh that's right, you're still riding the coattails of mom & dad. Despite working 60-80 hours per week, I still volunteer. So again, I don't get your point here.

You're a disgrace to the volunteer service.
Coming from you that statement really breaks my heart. Not.

Listen who-ever you are because you don't have the courage to state your name or where you're from, forgive me if I don't respond to anymore of your diatribes. There are plenty of intelligent people here on the board for me to converse with, and you're not one of them. If one compares my original post to your original post it becomes obvious that you are an uneducated and immature person. You cuss, you insult, and make unsubstantiated statements and assumptions... and then you probably wonder why so few people on the planet take you seriously.

But I'm curious about one thing: Are you a violent drunk?

Do you actually give to them when they show up at your door? I don't and I don't see why anyone would.

It's refreshing to hear a volunteer speak with find judgement and with character. Some of you are wannabee's gansters in uniform and the public is really starting to resent your BAD ASS attitudes. How did the fire system get so corrupt. It will come to an end just like every other crook eventually does. Thank you for sharing your views - your sensibility is appreciated

The taxpayers. Fund raising is too much work for them!
