Calling All Lindenhurst Residents (03/18/08)

On 03/18/08 There will be a vote for a new fire house. The village is telling you that it will only be a cost of $78 a year but that is if you pay $450 in taxes, I dont know about you but most people's taxes in the village are from $600-$1200. The cost of the fire house is set at 7.5 Million. This cost is be for they have broken ground or even did the final specs on what material the construction company will use, it also is the price with half azzed furnishing, and no back up generator.

The Village has also left out the fact that one piece of land has not been aquired yet one seller is refusing to do business with the village so there will be an expensive and lenghty legal battle to condenm his piece of property.

God only knows what it will cost, us after all is said and done.

Now factor in if the library renovation passes, and the normal annual increase and we are looking at an increase of god only knows but I know now is not the time.

Living on Long Island is tough and I just paid $600 to heat my house, and the economy is taking a dump. I can not sqeeze my annual income any further. This is not the time for an increase in taxes.

Get a life. When your house is on fire or you need an ambulance who do you call? We bust our asses trying to help yours all the time but if we do something wrong we get bitched at, if we do something right we don't get a thank you. If you call 911 because you have a fire and the equipment we have isn't good enough because the newer vehicles don't fit in the current firehouse and we have to call another department that is just another 20 minutes that your house is burning when we could be helping. Just for the record, although I agree that Lindy's main house is antiquated and too small (for a paid or vollie department). The present proposal is fatally flawed; location, the village doesn't own the land and must seize it via condemnation; secondly they need to scale back the proposal the fire house as designed would be awesome and the envy of everyone around, but is a waste of tax money. A larger truck house with modest living quarters and meeting room is all that is needed. Not a $7.5 million dollar two story castle.

Finally, just what is wrong with the present Lindenhurst Library? Seems like a fine facility to me. Just bureaucrats looking to spend more money, seems like the village should look long and hard at the elected officials that put forth unneccessary proposals just to spend money.

Volunteers that get tax breaks, pensions, free trips, free entertainment, food, facilities and the rest. Volunteer my ass. The biggest lie being told on LI IS the Volunteer Fire Service. Just by eliminating all of the districts, and going on a Battalion or even broader county based system, You would need a fraction of the membership that exists, fewer trucks and firehouses and a fraction of the Fire Districts that spend all of your tax money. Hicksville has 3 firehouses within a mile of each other from the days before elevated train tracks, all recently built, rebuilt or refurbished, with all new equipment. Gotta be in the billions by now in the last 10 years... Make 'em paid, make 'em accountable and get it under control. Instead of a 35000 sq ft firehouse, that cost 8 million and 5 million in entertainment and comfort features now you need a 10000 sq ft house with 2-3 bays, a realistic kitchen, dorm and ready room. Go into any FDNY house for examples...

I didnt reliquish my right to hold my government accountable and question its excesses because I have to work 2 jobs to live here on LI and have no time to volunteer. It is admirable and excellent that you have time to do something as rewarding as volunteer to serve your community. Perhaps I was defending my country overseas in combat or I am a Firefighter or Police Officer and already serve society. It is what it is, and you all hiding it only makes it worse. Tax dollars pay for everything but the people - the buildings, all of the stuff in the buildings, bowling alleys, shooting ranges, equipment, trucks, everything in and on the trucks, racing rigs, and any maintenence or expense for any and all of this stuff. When they knock on your door with the taxpayer paid for 1 million dollar truck idling burning $4.00 a gallon diesel fuel outside your door for that $20.00 donation - THATS for the Free company trips with spouse and/or kids to Hawaii, or the Caribbean or Disney- the booze, the beer, the company picnics, the food. Hold the FD's on LI as accountable as any other part of the government. Transparency is the goal. If not then they must have something to hide.

Although much of what you say is quite true, it is not the case for every department on Long Island. And quite frankly it is not fair to just group all volunteer departments together and say they are all that way. I could go on a long winded rant about the many costs associated with paid service pensions benefits etc, and go on and on about the theories thinning the fire departments out versus response times and limited resources because they are now spread too thin and were done so as a cost saving measure. However this arguement has been beat to death. You are obviously very anti volunteer, almost to the letter a pro union statement. but again I will concede there are many good points in your post, but remember not all are like that.

Truth is - most FD's on Long Island are just like this. I'm sure there are a few low budget departments, perhaps in very small communities or something like that - but none exist in Nassau like that, and frankly the whole thing stinks to high hell. Make it a County administered agency so there can be oversight and elimination of duplicated services. What I said about Lindy stands on its own. How much property does the Firemans Park and the snail house/racing team waste. What does that little thing cost the district every year in maintenance, insurance and equipment?

My friend, you all get painted with a broad brush because of how the vast majority behave.

I've actually even waved to the chiefs as I've passed them on the roads... why don't you get your facts straight before coming on here acting like yer some hot shot person with all the details... i already explained myself, in the other thread, MONTHS ago, what happened. I failed to have paperwork signed by a patient, after a chief ordered me to. Therefore, according to the bylaws, because I disobeyed the chief, and put the department at risk I was suspended...

what ive never mentioned, until now, was that during my appeal hearing, a councilmen asked chief mccloud that, if i had not pursued the appeal decision, would the chief have pushed for explusion, the chief said he would not have asked for me to be expelled and the suspension would have been all the punishment...

i find that to be a little odd... basically i was given additional punishment because i appealed a decision...

but i didnt bother to pursue it even though many people told me i should.. i just thanked the counsil members for the meeting, and left, handed in my supplies...

my family still supports the department during fund raisers and all those events that help them raise money... i continue to support my friends in the department

so why don't you get your facts straight before you and the others come on here acting as if im some rat talking trash about the lfd, because im not... and its people like you who put black marks on the LFD, for coming on here acting the way you do.
