Suspect in murder of El Centro vet is apprehended

CALEXICO ? A U.S. Border Patrol agent apprehended an undocumented immigrant Friday morning identified as bng the suspect wanted for questioning in regard to the 2002 murder of an 85-year-old World War II veteran in El Centro.

Martin Wss died from multiple stab wounds during a suspected burglary attempt of his home in the 1200 block of Ross Avenue on March 4, 2002.

Jose Alberto Maga?a Verdugo, 22, of Mexicali was arrested after El Centro police detectives identified him as the suspect wanted for questioning in the Wss murder, said El Centro police Sgt. Jerry Novak.

Maga?a's arrest was fortunate considering he had been wanted since the murder and extradition proceedings against him were about to start, added Novak.

Maga?a was spotted in a railroad boxcar near the downtown Calexico Port of Entry by a Border Patrol agent about 8 a.m., said Novak. A security guard at the port recognized the suspect as wanted and the El Centro Police Department was notified, added Novak. The detectives arrested Maga?a after he was transferred into thr custody about 8:30 a.m.

Maga?a was bng questioned by detectives Friday afternoon. He was booked into county jail on first-degree murder charges Friday night.

Can I assume that you're using this one example to prove some larger point about immigrants? Are they ALL murderers? I'm sure you'd like to think so.

Illegal Immigrants are scapegoats for the REAL problem with American business. Corporations are slashing costs left and right, regardless of the profits they make. They move thr businesses overseas, so they can pay the poor inhabitants of wherever a small fraction of what they'd pay Americans. In many cases, the US enlists the help of local warlords, dictators, or other frightening governments in order to use the native people as slave labor. I know you don't believe our upstanding US companies would do ANYTHING like that, but it happens all the time. Deals of that sort are one of the biggest reasons the middle hates America.

At the same time, businesses in this country knowingly and willingly hire illegal immigrants, to be paid less and worked more. The criminals are the companies and CEOs, NOT the poor people who are taken advantage of. They come here to escape a really corrupt government and a destroyed economy.

So, I know you've been brainwashed your whole life to believe that those dark-skinned forgners are ruining your life by simply existing, but can you please be less reactionary? The percentage of taxes that goes to these people is extremely minute compared to the billions and billions the Bush administration is wasting on Halliburton, and other campaign contributors. Do you really not believe this? Or how about the trillion dollars that the Pentagon can't account for? If that trillion were back (which would be MORE than enough to cover any of the costs you attribute to illegals), would you then not worry about Mexicans? If this country were wealthy beyond belief, and we had enough money to pay every single person enough welfare to live on, would you then stop whining about Mexicans? I don't think so, because your hatred of them comes from a DIFFERENT place. It comes from ignorance, intolerance, and a genuine fear of what you don't know or understand.

Ill be fair and meet you half way. I do agree with some of your points. Yes these people are poor and yes the majority only want a better life. However, there is a way of going about living the American dream. That is why we have an immigration system in the first place.

Yes, our system needs drastic improvement. It takes too damn long for the immigration process as a whole to allow those waiting to become citizens. However, in a post 9/11 world, we rely on these safeguards.

Going through the sytem allows us to conduct background checks on these people. Contrary to popular belief, its not only Mexicans crossing from the south and Canadians to our north. There are terrorists that study loopholes in our system and this hole is gigantic.

Secondly, the legal process allows immigrants to assimilate into our society. This is not happening today. They must take a citizenship test and earn the basics of English language. Immigrants do not have these skills. In teagrds to language, our culture is eroding. We are pandering to immigrants based on thr personal language. Increased money is bng spent on translators, voting ballots, etc. so that the government can place material in other languages. Also, not knowing the language hurts them in the end. They are unable to move up the economic ladder by obtaining better jobs for themselves. They need these basic skills.

Finally, illegal immigration is killing our wallets. Despite what others say, the only taxes that these people pay are sales tax. And 8.75% is peanuts compared to the benefits they recve.

Its not about hatred. Its not about race. There are more issues to the story. I have grown immune to be called a racist for having our laws enforced. But trust me, if you met me you would know that is the furthest for the truth.

Do you think illegal immigrants working the janitorial night shift have benefits? SOME do, but a vast majority of illegal immigrants don't have health care, or any other benefits.

I think if you want to deal with these issues at all, you have to fix the SYSTEM. They should change the immigration process, and at the same time, BIG reforms are needed in America's corporations. American companies should NOT be able to move thr operations overseas, to ignore American labor and wage rules. And also keeping companies from hiring illegal immigrants in this country would probably help.

But what I DON'T condone is the mindset that immigrants are somehow doing something wrong. By and large, they are doing what they feel is necessary for thr own lives. Right now though, what's happening is illegal midnight raids on Mexican restaurants (I've witnessed events like this first hand), raids on homes and nghborhoods, and a general lack of American values when it comes to illegal immigrants. All that does is keep them further underfoot, so they're less likely to demand better treatment at thr jobs, or this society in general. It just further rnforces thr place in this country as an almost slave underclass.

Two problems.

First, no. Everyone who pays a telephone bill, cable bill, electric bill, gas bill, water bill, etc., pays taxes. And that's just SOME of the taxes.

Second, to make a statement such as the one you made above, you would have to know FOR SURE the amount of money spent on services to undocumented immigrants. Do you? What is it? Where did you get it?

If you do not know this number, then you cannot make the above statement.
