If you are bng driven a little crazy by the daily barrage of news of illegal aliens publicly rallying across the country on thr "Freedom Rides," and by constant attention paid to various congressional proposals for amnesties and gigantic guest worker programs while 18 million American can't find a full-time job ...........
Maybe this is a good time to be soothed by a former 4th grade school teacher from California. Maggie Art through an email campaign is gathering a growing group of groups and email lists and imploring them to take a deep breath, not panic and do a daily exercise that will reassure the soul and do a whole lot of good at the same time.
If an apple a day keeps the doctor away, maybe Maggie's plan of a phone call a day (to Congress) will keep the anarchist, open-borders crowd at bay.
At the same time that Members of Congress are hearing and seng the same apalling images of anarchy as we are, wouldn't it be great if thr offices are filled with the sounds of staffers talking to people on the phone asking for a unified set of ultimate goals?
Maggie thinks so. And I think she may be on to something here.
All of our groups have our own acute activism needs and messages. We will continue to push them until Congress leaves town.
But how about considering adding this exercise:
1. Once a day, Monday through Friday, until Congress leaves town later in October or early November, make ONE PHONE CALL to Congress. Rotate among Members of your own choosing.
2. THE MESSAGE: Maggie suggests we focus this one phone call a day on what we ultimately want rather than what we have to settle for in the real politics of the moment. In these one-a-day phone calls, tell the staffers that you want immigration cut by three-quarters or 80% (you choose the proportion) back to around the average during the first 200 years of this country (from 1776-1976, the average was around 250,000).
Maggie likes using Rep. Tancredo's H.R. 946 (Mass Immigration Reduction Act of 2003) as a focal point. If enacted, it would slash legal numbers to around 300,000 and then cause them to steadily fall after that.
So, the message might sound something like:
"Hi, I'm [name], and I just want you to know that I agree with the majority of Americans who want our borders defended, immigration laws enforced and legal immigration numbers reduced in order to [deal with the outrage that you most want to correct]. I personally want to see legal immigration cut by XX% back toward our traditional American level. Please support H.R. 946, the Mass Immigration Reduction Act of 2003."
3. Maggie is saying that these toll free numbers into the Capitol are currently available:
1-800-648-3516 or 1-877-762-8762
4. I suggest that you also call local offices. We have all the DC and local phone numbers for every Member of Congress at:
www.numbersusa.com/congressinfo/
5. Maggie suggest that you look at the immigration records of a Member before you call the office. You can click to see the grades and the entire list of immigration actions by using links on the right side of our Home page at www.NumbersUSA.com.
6. You also will want to know that these Members are co-sponsoring the Mass Immigration Reduction bill:
Rep. Tancredo, Tom (CO)
Rep Bilirakis, Michael
Rep Cubin, Barbara[WY]
Rep Davis, Jo Ann [VA-1]
Rep Deal, Nathan [GA-1
Rep Duncan, John J., Jr. [TN-2]
Rep Goode, Virgil H., Jr. [VA-5]
Rep Johnson, Sam [TX-3]
Rep King, Steve
Rep Norwood, Charlie [GA-9]
Is this exercise too demanding?
Thousands of illegal aliens and thr supporters are taking a couple weeks off work and riding buses to hold public rallies and call attention to thr desires to basically do away with the concept of borders in our countries.
Maggie's call to arms to us is simply to make ONE PHONE CALL A DAY to attempt to drown out some of the noise from the anarchists. If most of you and thousands of other folks on other lists will do the same, we may just get the most ears of Congress -- without having to take a single breath of diesel fumes!
Send us some emails about your experiences that we can share to keep the momentum and enthusiasm.
Below, I have copied part of Maggie's email.
As always, check to see if there are any free faxes for you to send to Congress from:
www.NumbersUSA.com/fax
Thanks.

Excerpts from Maggie Art:
This idea came from Senator Lieberman on C-SPAN a few years back when he spoke of public indifference. Altho the issue was campaign finance, the message was that he heard little from constituents...a few hundred contacts on a subject would be unusual and a thousand might have him rethinking an issue. Let's give it to them.
The plan is simple I know, and I feel a bit humble proposing it. Please know I only taught 4th grade --- and yet students' letters to our state assemblyman caused him to drop into our classroom! Dramatic effects could come from our uniting in action. This only takes a couple of minutes a day and lets Congress know we're watching. If you believe working together is an idea whose time has come, please spread the word to your e-mail contacts and other groups. Or at l, make the personal effort to join in. Every voice counts.
Many thanks,
Maggie Art

I don't get this American "this is our country, everyone should get out" attitude. It's not your country, you stole it centuries ago and butchered the people who it belonged to. You put them in reservations. And now you claim it's yours. And you want the people, who are basically doing the same as your ancestors were doing all those years ago, out and removed.
The pilgrims are to be admired, these illegal aliens are scum. Yet there doing the same thing for the same reasons, only at a later point in time.
You incredibly selfish hypocrites.

I am a law-abiding citizen of the Unites States. I totally support our Constututional Republic form of government. The Founding Fathers were true geniuses and experts in human nature. Illegal aliens are not legal immigrants and all illegal aliens should be deported immediately. It was done in 1929 and 1954 and can easily be done again. In closing, I would like to sincerely say that if you don't like what I stand for "I DON'T GIVE A DAMN."

With the amount of money the illegals make without having to pay taxes, they do just fine. Or did you forget that? Plus, the employers that make out like bandits for are on the road with them as well. With the profits they make, they are also well-to-do. I know its tough for you to think, but try every once in awhile.

This is a trip to Washington for a rally. It's only about 900 people. It's not a twenty-five city concert tour!
And if you knew anything about undocumented immigrants, thr pay, and taxes, you would know that first and foremost, MOST don't make enough money to have to pay income taxes, even if they were documented!
Second, ALL undocumented immigrants PAY TAXES. Sure, many don't pay PAYROLL TAXES (although some do) - but do you think that undocumented immigrants somehow magically get food, clothing, gas, cigarettes, rent, utilities, etc. from the man in the clouds? The poor - and most undocumented immigrants in this country are poor - pay a far greater tax burden than the rich. You're going to come back and spout nonsense about income taxes, not realizing that taxes cover far more than income taxes!!
Every time anyone purchases something other than basic groceries (and many of those are taxed) they PAY TAXES, undocumented immigrants INCLUDED.
Undocumented immigrants even indirectly pay property taxes, since thr landlords pay a portion of the rent they recve in property taxes....do you really think that landlords, especially of undocumented immigrants, pay that out of the kindness of thr hearts? Landlords factor that in when setting rental rates. When undocumented immigrants pay thr phone bills, and electric bills, and gas bills, and water bills, and sewage bills, they PAY TAXES.
Do you really have such a limited understanding of an issue that gets you so worked up? Man, I can't imagine what that would feel like, but it CANNOT be good.

Immigration policy stupid, evil and hurting Americans
By Peter Brimelow
COMMENTARY
IN AMERICA, WE have a two-party system," a Republican congressional staffer is supposed to have told a visiting group of Russian legislators some years ago.
"There is the stupid party. And there is the evil party. I am proud to be a member of the stupid party."
He added: "Periodically, the two parties get together and do something that is both stupid and evil. This is called -- bipartisanship."
Our current mass immigration policy is a classic example of this fatal Washington bipartisanship. It is a stupid policy because there is absolutely no reason for it -- in particular, Americans as a whole are no better off economically because of mass immigration.
It is an evil policy because it second-guesses the American people, who have shown through smaller families that they want to stabilize population size.
Michigan Republican Spencer Abraham called the Senate immigration subcommittee hearing to rally support for lifting the current 115,000 per year cling on H-1B visas. Even though the cap was nearly doubled just last year, it was reached in June.
Unfortunately, our current immigration policy is consuming the environment with urban sprawl, hurting the poor and minorities with intensified wage competition, and ultimately threatening the American nation itself -- what Abraham Lincoln called "the last, best hope of earth" -- with cultural and linguistic fragmentation.
And, of course, the current mass immigration policy is bipartisan. Both major party leaderships have tacitly agreed to keep the subject out of politics. No single figure is more responsible for this than Sen. Spencer Abraham, R-Mich., chairman of the Senate's Immigration Subcommittee.
Abraham was a key figure in sabotaging the most recent chance of reform, the Smith-Simpson immigration bill, in 1996.
Ironically, this was a truly bipartisan measure, proposed by Republicans but based on the work of the Jordan Commission, headed by the former black liberal Democratic Congresswoman Barbara Jordan. She recommended almost halving immigration, in part because of its impact on the poor.
The economic stupidity of current mass immigration policy is illustrated by a brilliant new book, "Heaven's Door: Immigration Policy and the American Economy" (Princeton University Press).
The author, Professor George Borjas of Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government, is widely regarded as the leading American immigration economist. And he is an immigrant, arriving here penniless from Castro's Cuba in 1962, when he was 12 years old.
Borjas has every reason to favor immigration. He writes movingly about his own early experiences, and compassionately about the immigrant waves that have followed him.
But, as a scholar, he recognizes what he calls "accumulating evidence" that immigration has costs as well as benefits. "My thinking on this issue has changed substantially over the years," he admits. Borjas argues that the United States would be better off attempting to select a better-educated class of applicants, as Canada does. This, he allows, would change the ethnic mix of immigrants. It would be attacked for bng discriminatory. But all systems of screening applicants are discriminatory, he writes, including the one we have now.
--Peter Borjas
Professor Borjas' devastating findings:
The current wave of mass immigration is not benefiting Americans overall. "All of the available estimates suggest the annual net gain is astoundingly small," writes Professor Borjas, "... less than 0.1 percent of the Gross Domestic Product." Roughly: less than $10 billion in a $7 trillion economy.
Note carefully what Professor Borjas is saying here. Sure, those immigrants who work do raise overall GDP. But the bulk of that increase goes to the immigrants themselves, in the form of wages. The benefit to native-born Americans, after everything is taken into account, is infinitesimally small.
Current mass immigration is not benefiting Americans overall -- but it is transforming thr country. For nothing.
L-skilled Americans are bng hurt. Borjas estimates that almost half of the increased wage gap between high school dropouts and high school graduates can be attributed to immigration.
Again, note carefully what Professor Borjas is saying. Mass immigration is not making Americans richer overall. But it is, in effect, redistributing income between Americans. Specifically, because immigrants tend to be unskilled, they compete with American unskilled workers and have forced thr wages down.
Of course, profits for employers of unskilled workers have correspondingly gone up. But the employers' gain, according to Professor Borjas' calculations, does not cancel out the workers' loss.
And it's not just unskilled American workers. Any group of workers could be displaced. It's already happened in the computer software industry. Employers prefer to import cheap young immigrant programmers rather than retrain and pay older American programmers.
Current mass immigration is hurting key states badly. Because immigrants tend to be unskilled, and because we now have a costly social safety net, immigrants cost taxpayers money in the half-dozen states where they concentrate.
A lot of money. For example, immigration has raised the taxes of native households in California by a stunning $1,200 a year. Overall, this fiscal loss easily cancels out any small benefit immigration brings to native-born Americans.
Not only are Americans seng thr country transformed, they are actually paying for the privilege.
Oh, in case you're wondering: The amazing fact is that Borjas' views are the consensus in his profession -- see the National Research Council's 1997 report "The New Americans."
Evil? Or stupid? ther way, immigration policy is broke. And it needs fixing. Now.
Brimelow is a financial journalist and the author of "Alien Nation: Common Sense About America's Immigration Disaster." His e-mail address is pbrimelow@ forbes.com.

Yes we should unite, not only to save our own hides but those of future generations here in America...namely our own children. The Balkanization of America has begun and shows no signs of stopping. If we do nothing then we are just as guilty as the coyotes who smuggle the illegals in, the "gone scared" politicians, and the greedy business that hire them or others who look the other way. We have a HUGE problem that is boiling over now. For those non believers just watch your tax bills go up to pay for the free services for illegals, while you watch your nghborhoods be overrun with overcrowded houses, non insured- non licensed drivers on the road, and most of all you can be sure that when the baby boomer's retire thr will not be enough money paid into SS partly due to illegals taking jobs here and not paying into our system. That is only a short list of the problems we are about to embark on. Wanna here more...Check this out.......The coming nightmare of Balkanization

"The coming nightmare of Balkanization"
This wasn't supposed to happen here
[Reprinted from Issues & Views November 17, 2003]
Professor and writer Victor Davis Hanson offers his knowledge and insights on the subject of Mexican immigration and its impact on our society. In October, he spoke to students and faculty of Hillsdale College. Following are excerpts from what he had to say.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------What we see going on with Mexican immigration today is a tragedy, and it is not simply a result of the federal government abdicating its responsibility to control our borders (although the federal government has certainly done precisely that). The citizens of my state of California and others are also complicit in this tragedy. For instance, millions of us who used to cut our own lawns and clean our own houses now consider such tasks beneath us, as if America's middle class has embraced as its birthright the culture and lsure once confined to an aristocratic elite. Suddenly our young people, our poor and our unskilled find jobs picking apples or laying tiles somehow demeaning. So-called dead-end jobs are no longer a rite of passage for our youth, but are deemed proper only for unskilled laborers from Mexico, whose toil, we are assured, keeps our produce, restaurants and hotels inexpensive.
Related to this trafficking in human capital, a serious social and moral dilemma looms a mere decade away, when the Baby Boomers of California finally--and nearly all at once--reach retirement. Influential, affluent, informed--and not shy about self-interested self-promotion--these retirees will demand that Social Security and state retirement programs remain funded at promised levels. But these benefits will remain possible only with a complacent majority population of younger Hispanic immigrants with larger families, working for wages that are less, on average, than what is bng paid out to these aging white retirees with no dependents.
Data alone cannot decide for us whether California is saved or ruined by illegal immigration. Liberal economists, for example, offer models that demonstrate that illegal immigrants bring in $25 billion to America in net revenue per annum. Other statisticians employ quite different models showing that these same immigrants cost the United States over $40 billion a year--indeed, that the average California household must contribute at l $1,200 each year to subsidize the deficit between what illegal immigrants cost in services and what they pay in taxes. Who can sort out all the wildcard effects of cash income, fraudulent Social Security numbers and politicized research?
Tragically, political correctness makes it nearly impossible to discuss illegal immigration in any kind of rational way without bng labeled racist or nativist. Indeed, even the legal term "illegal alien" is now politically incorrect, and is bng replaced by "undocumented worker." But most know that not all illegal immigrants are workers, and that the problem of illegal immigration involves more than a lack of proper documentation.
We are told that blanket amnesty and a grant of legal status will ensure assimilation and prosperity. But statistics suggest that after 20 years, even legal Mexican immigrants have double the welfare rates of American citizens. And in one study, students surveyed at 13 years of age and then again at 17 were 50 percent more likely at 17 to identify themselves as "Mexicans" as opposed to "Mexican-Americans"--this despite, or perhaps even because of, having spent four years in American high schools.
We now ponder honoring identification documents from Mexico (alone of forgn countries) as legal American identification, even as we read of endemic corruption among police and bureaucrats across the border. In response, aliens from myriad other countries now demand that thr own forgn IDs be honored, and the other 49 states of the Union are not so sure they should accept California driver's licenses, given how promiscuously they are granted, at intrastate security check points. Thousands of immigrants from the Punjab, Korea and the Philippines wait patiently for five years or more to become naturalized citizens in the proper and legal fashion, only to watch hundreds of thousands cross illegally from Mexico in the expectation of a periodic and privileged amnesty designed only for them.
Almost everything stern and uncompromising that for two centuries has helped other immigrants to the United States--entry under legal auspices, language immersion, autonomy from government assistance, rapid assumption of an American identity and eager acceptance of mainstream American culture--has ther been dismissed as pass???r carried on halfheartedly.
Most Californians of all backgrounds understand the growing social and cultural costs that flow from this situation. Yet the Orwellian alliance of many libertarian-leaning conservatives--who embrace the idea of a perpetual supply of hard-working, unskilled and inexpensive workers--with the race industry of the Left--which envisions an endless influx of unassimilated potential voters who can be appealed to on the basis of group rather than individual identity--tends to demonize any discussion of the issue. Opposition to massive illegal immigration is customarily and cleverly equated with disdain for immigration per se, hence characterized as un-American.
Meanwhile Mexico, a richly endowed but nearly failed state, continues to refuse to do the political, cultural and economic restructuring that is needed to turn itself around. Indeed, why should it bother making these reforms when it can export potential dissidents from its hinterland to the U.S., gaining in the process $12 billion in remittances from expatriates? (These remittances constitute the second largest source of forgn exchange to the Mexican economy.)
A full 50 percent of real wage labor losses was recently attributed by the Labor Department to the influx of cheap immigrant labor. While we continue to import this labor, millions of second-generation Hispanic and other legal laborers are making not much more than the minimum wage. Of course, few of the professors and politicians who support illegal immigration--whether for continuance of cheap labor or for the sake of the entitlement industries--live in California's new aparthd communities like Orange Cove, Mendota or Parlier, communities where Mexican immigrants make up the vast majority of the population and struggle with dismal schools, high crime, little revenue and other social problems akin to those in Mexico.
In a country where there may be anywhere from ght to fifteen million illegal immigrants, is there any hope for avoiding the nightmare of Balkanization? Perhaps. After all, we got into our present mess only during the last 30 years, and then only by doing almost everything wrong. Thus we need not do everything right, but simply return to what we used to do so well: insist that immigration be measured and legal, do more of our own unpleasant work, enforce all of our laws equally, emphasize assimilation and return to thinking and speaking of Americans as individuals rather than in terms of thr racial or group identities
