Man paralyzed after crash, charged with DWI
: A Massapequa Park man who had been driving drunk was left completely paralyzed Monday night after his pickup truck smashed into a parked car then hit the steps of a building, the police said.
Joseph Fichtl, 63, of 424 Charles Ave., was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated.
He was hospitalized in critical condition with what the police described as "total body paralysis" and he will be arraigned on the DWI charge as soon as his medical condition permits, the police said.
Fichtl was driving north on Broadway in Massapequa Park at around 8 p.m. Monday when his 2004 Dodge Dakota truck struck a parked vehicle in front of 412 Broadway, then continued and hit the front steps of 412 Broadway, the Nassau police said.
Seventh Precinct police Officer Stephen Parry responded to a report of the accident, and saw Fichtl behind the steering wheel lying across the seat toward the passenger side of the Dodge with the engine still running, police said. The officer smelled a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage on Fichtl's breath, and arrested him, police said.
A Nassau County Police Department Ambulance took Fichtl to Nassau University Medical Center where he was admitted in critical condition.
