View Full Version : Who's Buying the DSS Building for $50M
Newsday is Asleep

See the article in Newsday, in which Tommy Boy says he has a developer who wants to buy the DSS Building for $50M. I thought the building couldnt be sold because the County was obligated to provide parking for the Court House. So isn't the budget off another $50M dollars.... How many years has Suozzi anticipated the sale of this building. And is this building sale, and the costs associated with it another white elephant false balance sheet asset for the County?

Its been 6 years since the planned real estate consolidation and what do they have to show for it? An ongoing, expensive renovation at the court house which provides little real office space, long-term leases on Charles Lindbergh Drive for health and social services and the the sale of some small properties around the county. DSS moved out of garden city 4 years ago but they had to keep the building open because they couldn't figure out where to put probation, and even now they cannot sell the property because of real or threatened litigation. 240 OCR is a mess that they won't improve because they don't know what they want or can do (see the DSS building). The bottom line: expensive renovations and long term leases, services less available to county residents, and no offsetting sale of assets. Brilliant.

But see, the "sale" of this property to a developer for $50M is a brilliant one shot deal which Suozzi can carry over for several years as a revenue item. Creative accounting only a former CPA can appreciate

The fact is that the County has not included any land sale proceeds in its operating budget since Mr. Suozzi became County Executive.

Suozzi never factored in "savings" from real estate consolidation (including sale of buildings) in his budget projections and planning?

The old King Kullen is really moving along. Could it be that the county doesnt like giving the PCOs and FCTs extra sick days because they keep winning thr grievance. They work in a hole in the ground and have to move.
