Westchester Democratic chairman to step down

David Alpert, who took over the leadership of the Westchester Democratic Party
six years ago as it was beginning its ascendency in a county that had long been
dominated by the GOP, said yesterday that he will step down as chairman when
his term ends in September...

Alpert has suffered from poor health, but he was facing growing discontent over
what critics said is his autocratic leadership style...

Local Democratic leaders also expressed discontent over what they said was Alpert's acquiescence in a so-called nonaggression pact among the two parties
that ensures Westchester's top elected officials - including County ExecutiveAndrew Spano, County Clerk Leonard Spano, state Sen. Nicholas Spano and
District Attorney Jeanine Pirro - do not face tough challengers...

"There are many people in both the Democratic and Republican Party who
recognize that the leadership in both parties participated in allowing a cozy
arrangement that deprived the voters of real choice in the last elections,"
White Plains Democratic leader Adam Bradley said yesterday. Alpert yesterday
denied there is a nonaggression pact, as he has insisted throughout his term...
