This is an article I wrote for a local paper supporting military recruiters bng permitted to enter high schools and universities-Ms. Croke took another view that would make any Vet sick--hope you enjoy it!!!!!
-----------------------------------------------------
Freedom isn’t free…or is it?
Last weeks article “Opt Out” by Shla Croke confirms one of our Founding Father’s views regarding the American population. He believed ‘the masses are asses’ and nothing proves that point better than last weeks article by Ms. Croke.
Her article supports the notion that parents should keep thr children as far away from military recruiters as possible.
She said, “The military is about killing and dying, and all else is secondary.” She concluded her article and said, “The bottom line? Nothing less than your child’s future.”
The toughest job associated with any military is the duty of a mother to send her son off to war knowing she may never see him again. It is just as tough if not tougher than anything her son will see while in combat, but it is a vital and very important role.
Our military is not about killing and dying; we are not crazy fools! Our primary mission is to defend the Constitution of the United States, We are about defending the liberties that people like Ms. Croke take for granted, We are about doing whatever it takes to prevent another September 11.
After reading her article it made me realize the severity of the situation, what my mother must have felt like over the past 6 months while I served overseas in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom? I now realize what an incredible woman she is and all the women alike.
The ancient Greek city-states of Athens and Sparta, although very different in the type of political rule were similar in that both states knew that in order to be a strong, vibrant state it was essential for individuals to put thr nation before thr own interests. The political philosopher Socrates himself stated this concept. But as the citizens of these societies started to become selfish and greedy, the states’ power reflected these attitudes and eventually they became weak and vulnerable.
Although maybe a clearer picture can be made by understanding President Kennedy’s statement, “Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.”
All of my boyhood dreams of going into combat and fighting the enemy went up in smoke just like the first missile did after it exploded near my base in Kuwait. But those are just dreams and I can find others, the lives that went up in smoke on September 11 are not so simple to replace. Those lives are gone forever.
It is our job to protect the living now, to beat terrorism and to make our country safe again. Freedom isn’t free Ms. Croke. Our nation needs your sons, or perhaps you would find it more appropriate for my sisters to stand in your son’s stead?
