I think this man has some good ideas and brings up more than a few serious problems that are within the District, mainly with those in charge. It's nice to see a canidate who actually has some ideas and says what they are as opposed to just bashing "the other guy".

Hi, there are some things I can not address now. But I can give my personal feelings based what I know. The first thing I would do if presented with this issue if while in office is provide an explanation of exactly what happened. I have heard rumors about this, but that's all they are is rumors? No one deserves to be judges soley upon rumor. The commissioners just like any of us and deserve an initial fair shake. There can be logical justifications for what they do and folks just don't get to hear them. Just because, even todays, BOFC does something I don't care for, doesn't make me right and them wrong.

Now, hypothetically, if I were a commissioner already, the first issue I'd have to address is why I hadn't been consulted about this. Just kidding. Assuming that I was privy to what had transpired though, for as far as I know all major decisions are made together, I would be happy to offer a direct and honest answer to you as to why what transpired had happened. Perhaps there was a mitigating financial justification, perhaps the BOFC was obligated to Civil Service in some manner, perhaps it is so temporary a job that we needed help ASAP and the easiest answer was a quick very short term hire. I don't know but would find out and unless it would involve divulging personal information about an employee, there is no reason not to answer anyone directly.

As for my own personal feelings if I could I would offer the position first on a OFD Department "Job Board" which we could set up on our web site. We have a lot of kids in the district looking for gigs these days while they attend college or in some cases try to save enough to attend school. I'm not a big fan of patronage, but if we want to keep our younger membership in place we should try to help these kids as much as we can. This is part of what I meant about a changing demographic.

The "Job Board" would also let other district and/or department members who know of jobs or tests for jobs to post on the Job Board and give our nghborhood kids a leg up on any competition. In the case of the various tests that are given our brother and sister members at the FDNY or other paid FD's, the PD's, Federal, State, County and local jobs could post exam notifications and maybe we could give our young members a forum for study groups.

I hope this helps, there isn't much I can do for now, and that includes judging the BOFC's actions with out facts. I do hope I have given you an example of what I would try to do in the future.

The chief of the Oceanside Fire Department and ght firefighters from the Salamander Company have been found guilty of departmental charges stemming from an alcohol-related incident at a block party, according to fire officials and sources close to the probe.

Six of the firefighters recved 60-day suspensions and three were given 90-day suspensions, fire officials said Wednesday.

The suspensions are retroactive to the date the firefighters were suspended. Time served for six firefighters means they can return to duty next week. For the three others they will be suspended for 30 more days.

Anthony Iovino, counsel for the Board of Fire Commissioners, said the board sent a strong message.

"These nine members have been outstanding volunteers," Iovino said, "who unfortunately appear to have gotten caught up in making momentary bad decisions."

Fire officials would not confirm whether Department Chief Tommy McDermott was among those suspended, but they acknowledged that Assistant Chief Daniel Sabatino is acting chief of the department. McDermott could not be reached for comment.

All nine members have been out on suspension since October, after an internal investigation of the incident by Sabatino. A series of hearings were held last month, and on Tuesday a decision was reached by a three-member disciplinary board of veteran firefighters.

Christopher Devane, the Mineola attorney representing all the suspended members, could not be reached for comment Wednesday.

Residents along Oceanside Parkway who attended the August block party reported that at l 12 firefighters, returning from a parade and competition in Freeport, barreled down the street in a fire truck.

Three male party guests confronted the firefighters, some of whom, residents said, were waving around a first-place trophy and holding beer bottles. A fight broke out and one resident's hand was broken.

Witnesses said McDermott arrived in his department vehicle and told the firefighters to leave when the fight started.

The days suspended from active duty will not be credited toward the firefighter's pensions, the amount of which is based on points accumulated while on active duty.

The Oceanside Fire District has not released the names of those involved or the specific charges, citing department bylaws that give members two weeks to fight the information's release.
