View Full Version : Why do people respect Eminem?

I mean the guy writes a song with the words "Hate fags? Answer's yes" and then writes another song about how much it sucks to be called a gay-basher.

And I don't think that he even is a gay-basher. If he were, he would back it up; he would go on tv and talk about how homosexuals are the plague that needs to be swept clean from the Earth. Instead he pretends that all his rap is some sort of satire. Please...

The guy doesn't even know the difference between the words 'gender' and 'genr?' and we're supposed to believe that he can comprehend, much less write satire on the level of Oscar Wilde or Henrik Ibsen?

The reason he made up this whole bullshit satire story is because he's afraid, probably for marketing reasons, of bng labeled a hate-monger.

And don't worry, I'm not purporting that he shouldn't be allowed to say whatever he wants. He, like everyone else, has the absolute unlimited freedom to say whateber he wants. But the responsibility that comes with that freedom is backing up and standing behind everything you say. Conservatives in this country like to pretend that the political correctness movement has created a linguistic orthodoxy: an environment where people aren't allowed to say certain things. This is not the case. All the political correctness movement has done is create an environment where you are absolutely free to use the word nigger but if you do you had better damn well be ready to be labeled a racist. Before political correctness, words like nigger and fag were thrown around at the dinner table by otherwise respectable people, the words were popularly sanctioned in a sense. Now the only people who would use words like nigger are racists and hate-mongers, and that is how we have made progress as a society.

It's really a pretty nice strategy, the shock-value of his music sells CD's, and the record execs and even the man himself can pretend that he is bng x5-x5-x5-x5-x5-rized by the lefty intolerance nazis.

You know what fuels him more than anything? The endless Eminem specials that VH-1 loops every weekend. Each one paints a more romantic view of him than the last.

IMO, he doesn't hate gays. In the "Real Slim Shady," doesn't he say "There's no reason that a man and another man can't elope"?

Yea, that's what I'm saying. He's so confused about his own message. It's not about opinions for him, it's just about whatever sells CD's.

An advertising agency (Euro RSCG) did a poll about him and Bush and it turns out that 53% of Americans think that his lyrics are more believable than Bush's speeches.

Which says a lot about Bush and his speeches and even more about the average American, if they believe that ther of those hold any truth.

Both of them like to play the r, since Eminem is always "dissed" by his enemies, while George is under a constant thread from terrorists with invisible weapons of mass destruction.

To the fist comment: How the hell is that progress?! You're a faggot and a nigger for saying that! It makes no sense. They are just words, but people let it really get to them and they allow these WORDS to drive them crazy. That's a step backwards if you ask me.

That, however, is exactly what feeds eminem's popularity (in addition to the VH1 hype). His entire career is built on controversy. Why can no one see that? He says these crazy things to make people mad, and almost no other reason. Infact this very message board is part of it. So I'm sure Eminem thanks you ladies (I assume you're female) for keeping his name in conversation.

Also, that is why people respect him. His message is: Don't take him or any artist seriously. Just listen to the music if you like it, and don't if you don't. If he says something that is offensive, well, that's your fault for bng offended by it. Don't let him or anyone get to you unless they actually DO something wrong.

You people are WAYYYYY to uptight.

Inflexible people have been complaining about musicians forever. From the beatles, to Led Zeppelin, to Yanni. It seems like ever generation seems to loathe music trends of the generation after it. Rock and Roll was once the music of Satan, and Rap promoted murder. But before that, swing music was a tool of sexual pervesion, etc, etc.

I personally don't like Eminem that much, but I certainly don't think he's a bad influence on anyone. By the way, you seem to be taking those lyric quotes extremely out of context. I believe there's another song of his that says "there's no reason a man and another man can't elope".

So really, think what you want about him, but don't just continue this cycle of inflexibility and lack of understanding. Many people DO like his music, and I'm sorry to say they're largely not illiterate homophobes.

There is one redeeming value in gangsta rap "music". It is keeping the "rap artists" out of jail. Most of them are lowlifes (some are even rich lowlifes) who grew up doing stickups, robberies, murders and drugs. That is the very essence of rap. These "musicians" grew up trying to gain respect by bng violent and badder than the next guy. If you notice, every so often one will revert to his roots and kill someone for "dissing them". Hell, even millionaire Puffy got caught with a gun after a shootout in a nightclub in NYC.

These "artists" may beget the misguided admiration of people who are attracted to thr badboy image (not to mention thr fame and money), but that is not respect. Of course, respect can be demanded through fear, but true respect is something one earns by bng a law abiding, moral, decent and caring human bng. I doubt many (if any) of these so called "artists" deserve respect.

People like Eminem are a symptom (and one could reasonably argue a cause) of the decay of our society. Foul mouthed lyrics depicting the degredation of women, murder and mayhem, drugs and the like is not something that any decent parent should allow thr child to be exposed to. I realize that free speech allows these people to spew thr venom, but hopefully it will all come to an end when the public has had its fill of this crap and realizes what type of message this is sending to impressionable children. Like it or not, these lowlifes are becoming role models for inner city children. How sad.

You seem to have very definite opinions about Eminem's music. Good thing you DON'T have to listen to him, if you don't want to.

But you also don't have the right to decide for other people, what they should listen to. And you're definitely not an authority on interpretting his music. I know people who DO like Eminem, and they would very much disagree with your interpretation of his music. Some of them are women, some are gay, some are black, etc. Your condemnation falls flat on its face if you restate it to be more accurate, "Eminem SEEMS like this to ME!" When you realize your own opinion is NOT reality, there's much less to get upset about.

I know plenty of people who like Eminem, and they are NOT racists, or biggots in any way, nor do they think he himself is one. That tends to contradict your views on the subject, don't you think?

Eminem has a criminal history that includes convictions for assault and weapons possession. He's an abuser of alcohol and drugs and spins vicious, nasty lyrics that have absolutely no redeeming social value, and rely on shock value to appeal to impressionable children. Not exactly my idea of a role model, but hey, like you say, that's only my opinion.

Eminem is only part of a long line of lowlifes who have cashed in on America's youth and others with identity problems. The message they send is hate, greed, violence and drugs. You cannot dispute that...the lyrics spell it all out.

This is America, and Eminem, et.al. have the absolute right to churn out all the filth they want to. And....you and your wife are certainly free to adore him if you want to, but answer me this...would you want your child listening to such trash? Actually Billybob, I'm very surprised that you stick up for the likes of Eminem, he stands for everything you dislike about society.

As far as a lot of people liking Eminem and the so-called gangsta rappers, there are people in this world who think feces qualifies as art too.

I somehow doubt you've analyzed the lyrics on your own. I have already serious disagreed with your analysis of his message (and no, I'm still not a fan of his). Just because you state it in fact form, "...nasty lyrics that have absolutely no redeeming social value, and rely on shock value to appeal to impressionable children" doesn't make it TRUE. Those are your opinions. Perhaps his music speaks to people's frustrations? You're making a judgement call, and my point is that we should all be smarter than criticising art (and yes, it IS ART!).

But anyway, at l you acknowledge that all of this is your opinion.

And I wouldn't give a crap WHAT my child listened to. If my child were stupid enough to do something bad because of a song they listened to, then that would be MY fault as a parent. But the problem would lie in the child's inability to make an intelligent decision. That's why this is a free country. You are free to express yourself in any way you choose. Or has that changed?

Reality, you have every right to think what you want, but don't assume you have a handle on some kind of cosmic truth, while everyone else is a moron.

And by the way, George W. Bush has a criminal record as well. AND he's committed crimes he was never even charged with, like defrauding shareholders, going AWOL in the National Guard, bng a party to election fraud, etc. All well-documented of course, although I'm sure you still believe that if he wasn't convicted, it doesn't exist.

Tell me, what's the difference between your intolerance of this music now, and the intolerance of rock and roll 50 years ago, or jazz before that? The people back them said the same things; it causes violence, bad behavior, etc...

All this really just seems like complaining to me.

WHy is it such a big deal that SOME people like Eminem? Because YOU don't find him socially relevant? Are you God? Are you so locked into your point of view that you can't accept that other people like something about his music that you don't?

And try this. Don't respond by saying what Eminem "IS", or what his music "IS". Those are interpretations, made by you.

I'm getting tired debating over whether or not Eminem is a lowlife, so this will be my last post in this thread. He is what he is. To some of you he is a gifted artist. To me he is a poster boy for the punks of the world. Just a difference in perception among us.

And by the way Billyboy, pretty much everything anyone posts on these boards is thr own opinion, and after reading hundreds of your posts, not many are more opinionated than you. For some reason you seem to delight in taking the "devils advocate" position on almost every issue. You defend the indefensible and attack the obvious. On the one hand you ridicule people who label and demean others, and on the other you defend the likes of Eminem, who has bashed gays, women and African Americans. And please don't tell me it was a youthful indiscretion. Eminem only denounced his own lyrics when he realized it was going to be a major controversy (and still is) and that it would cost him money and bad press coverage.

Billybob, I know there's a term for people like you, but it hasn't come to me just yet.

LOL Reality. That was a good analogy...
i AGREE WHOLEHEARTEDLY

Too bad that Eminem doesn't use his talents for the GOOD of society instead of "cashing in" on helping to corrupt Americas vulnerable youth. There's alot to be said for good role models and mentors. Emenem is cashing in on his own past sick and painful life(which is regrettable for sure), while infecting others with his rage and get back at society attitudes. Venting is one thing, but when it comes at the expense of others, then it's not OK He is just "passing on" his pain to others.

reality you are so right about sillybob! he would argue any comment that had a shred of logic, morality or redeeming values. to him there is no wrong or vile or profane only the dirty rats who have the nerve to pass judgment on behavior or art etc are wrong. for people like him OJ Simpson and M Jackson are the model Americans who are harassed by the oppressive police and other racist bigots. to sillybob the real enemies of society are those who define right and wrong because that is only an opinion. he is of the same ilk as an ACLU attorney. he is so liberal that he couldn't even take his own side in an argument. maybe he is a college professor who would give the Shadey M&M fan an A on his spelling and assign your children porno and group sex for homework. yes to him right is wrong and wrong is right and those of us who still believe in traditional values are bigots and unevolved.

i respect all of your opinions... however, i myself love rap, and i also enjoy eminem. eminem is not only famous for his lyrics, he is famous for his beats, and his ability to rap. he is a very good rapper, and to the people who disagree with me... do u even like rap? if u do... then listen to eminem rap and ignore the lyrics, wouldnt u agree that eminem's sound is like no other? and also, what is this reference to niggers? eminem never portrays blacks in a negative way in his lyrics, that i can remember. another thing... im gay, and in no way does eminem's lyrics offend me, they are just lyrics.... also, i am a teenager, 18 actually.. and i have listened to eminem since he came out, which means i was an 'impressionable child/teenager', and i also listened, and still listen to it with my friends... have i/we killed anyone? have i/we hated myself because im gay? have i/we dropped out of school because i/we listen to eminem? and as billybob says about rock n roll portraying satan, why dont people bash thr music like people easily bash eminem's. and to the reference about people doing stupid things because of the music listened to... well my dear, music has nothing to do with what anyone does, unless they are that screwed up to actually do it, if eminem's music or any other rap music wasnt here to influence 'impressionable children', something else would be because people would find something/someone else to blame. what about children watching movies, playing video games, learning about war school? war is violence, teenagers/children learn about war, what about hitler dressing up inmates from the boardering country so he could say they attacked him first and then attack that country? what about individuals who faught/fight in war because of patriotism, well... that 'impressionable child' may let thr imagination run and say "well, im gonna go shoot up my school, because i believe that i am not bng treated fairly, which i dont like, so i am going to do something about" or "im going to go shoot this person because they call me names", the child may think they are defending thr right to be who they are, and that society is against them. so why not blame something else that is stupid like war, or movies. if parents are so worried that thr child is going to be influenced to do stupid things that are against the law, then the parent should be there for them and teach them right and wrong, thats what parents are for... to teach u right from wrong, left from right, to teach u your morals.
some people are just messed up and blame thr problems on something else instead of themselves.

now people... do not get defensive against anything i am saying, or lash out... like i said at the beginning.. all of what any of u said is your opinion... however... i have my own views also... and there is no need to get all pissed off about it.. just debate in a NON rude way...everyone has the freedom of speech and shouldnt be hated on because of thr opinions...
