Enclosed is a link to an article that appeared in the Long Island
Newsday 8/12/07.It describes how Legislator dave Mejias (D-North
Massapequa),has personally paid for minorities to take this police
tutorial. The minorities that were targeted for this free course were
black and hispanic,only. I am a man who has paid for every police test
and dreamed of becoming a police officer. When I apply and take the tests I always
cringe on answering the demographics question because bng female or
male ,or white ,black ,asian,or hispanic shouldn't matter,but why does
the civil service ask? This test should be based on the correct answers
not who answered them. Is this" demographics survey" that appeared on
the civil service test application where Dave Mejias recved the names
of his hand picked minorities? Since when is it legal for a legislator
to fund a course given to one or two races? This seems like a total
abuse and misuse of power !!! It also is reverse discrimination !! If a
legislator ever did something like this and targeted whites only there
is absolutely no way that he would be able to get away with it,so why
did Mejias?

What would be in it for Dave? Is this his personal money going to pay for these courses? Is it money from the government? If these officers pass the test, would they feel that they owe Dave? There is a potential for abuse here. While Dave's motives may indeed be altruistic, what if some of the officers feel that they "owe" Dave for paying for these tutorials and they tip off say, automobile accidents or reported falling accidents, to ther Dave or possibly an investigator who works for Dave? Obviously, there is a potential for corruption which needs to be addressed.

If there was a course that excluded blacks and latinos, you'd see them marching in the streets. They are spoon fed ways to pass the test. The best person for the job should be hired no matter what thr race. If excluding certain members of the public from a course based on thr race isn't racist then I don't know what is.

Mejias never "fudged" anything in his life I bet. He never "fudged" his loyalty to Sal Pontillo, or to the Farmingdale Republican Club. He never "fudged" his loyalty to Tom DiNapoli in 2001, while having secret deals with Tom Suozzi. He never "fudged" on any detail regarding funding as Treasurer of the Nassau IDA. He never "fudged" on the Crowe-Deegan/Nassau IDA relationship, or on Sylvergate. He never "fudged" when he went started out as a Catholic, then attended Christian Fundamentalist church services to appease the far right, and then, when the far right rejected him, became a staunch advocate of the Domestic Partner Registry and Homosexual Marriage. Much like the Detroit Tiger catcher is called Pudge Rodriguez, I think it would be a safe bet to call the current Nassau County Legislator from the 14th District "Fudge Mejias."
