Every decade, Suffolk forms a commission to review and update the county charter, such as getting rid of superfluous laws.
Presiding Officer William Lindsay (D-Holbrook) Friday named his five appointments - a judge, a professor, a labor leader, a retired politician and a retired police officer - to the 15-member Charter Revision Commission.
"I'd like them to look at the whole process and see if there is any way we can improve it," Lindsay said. "There are innovations that weren't available ten years ago that could change our process and procedures."
The appointees are:
- Sondra Bachety, former Presiding Officer of the Suffolk County Legislature.
- Arthur Cliff, a retired police officer and a former president of the Superior Officers Association.
- Suffolk County Court Judge Andrew Crecca.
- Thomas Germano, an arbitrator who is director of the Labor Management Center.
- Steven Kenny, professor of economics at Suffolk County Community College and a Town of Southampton councilman.
Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy also gets to name five appointees and the remaining five commission members would be made jointly by Lindsay and Levy.
Previous commissions have recommended changes, including the number of legislative districts and consolidating departments, Lindsay said.
By September, Lindsay hopes the commission would begin deliberations by holding public hearings to solicit comments from residents, civic associations and others.
