Former Smithtown highway chief pleads guilty to using campaign cash on personal expenses

Smithtown -- The former Smithtown Superintendent of Highways pled guilty to filing a false document Tuesday before Acting State Supreme Court Justice Michael Mullen in Riverhead.

Edmund Lynch, 59, of 39 King Arthur Court in Saint James, served as the elected town Highway superintendent from 2002 through 2005. During his guilty plea before Judge Mullen, Lynch admitted spending $6,000 of campaign money on personal expenses. Lynch hid the improper spending by rmbursing himself with campaign funds and reporting the expenses as campaign-related on official disclosure documents filed with the Suffolk County Board of Elections.

Lynch illegally used campaign funds to pay for meals with family members in upstate New York and Massachusetts restaurants, the purchase of a laptop computer for one of his children, fees for a membership at St. George's Country Club in Setauket, expenses to learn an exercise regimen to improve his golf swing, and season tickets to New York Giant football games in 2002 through 2005. Lynch re-sold the football tickets and pocketed the cash in 2002 and 2003.

He pled guilty to the felony charge of offering a false instrument for filing in the first degree and pay $6,000 in civil forfture.
