The Nassau Democratic Committee this week nominated candidates to run for county-wide elections this fall, but it remains unclear who they'll name to run against Republican Hempstead Supervisor Kate Murray.

Party officials named Valley Stream attorney Gary Carlton, as a "place holder" until a candidate is picked.

John Lewis, chairman of the Hempstead Democratic Committee, said the party has two weeks to find "a viable candidate" to run for Hempstead supervisor.

To run against republican John Venditto for Oyster Bay Supervisor, the Democrats named Joseph Terino, a Syosset attorney. Terino is a former assistant district attorney and is now a part time prosecutor for the Nassau County Traffic and Parking Violations Agency.

In the Republican dominated town of Hempstead, the Democrats have chosen some relatively unknown residents to run for council seats and other town positions.

Chumi Diamond, of Woodmere, will run against Hempstead Councilman James Darcy. Diamond is the county's Deputy Director of Environmental Coordination.

Bob Young, of Merrick, will run against Hempstead Councilwoman Angie Cullen. An environmentalist and activist, Young is member of the Merrick-Bellmore Democratic Club.

N. Scott Banks, of West Hempstead, will run against Councilman Edward Ambrosino. Banks was elected to the Hempstead Town Board in 2000, but as a result of redistricting, had to run in a special election, and lost. In 2004, Newsday reported that Banks was fired from his part-time job with the Nassau County Assessment Review Commission for not putting in enough hours and then continued to get paid by Nassau for about six months while putting in no hours at all.

Adam Moser of Hewlett will run against Hempstead town clerk Mark Bonilla. Moser was a district court judge and is now an attorney in Rockville Centre.

Jeff Prime of South Floral Park will run against Recver of Taxes Don Clavin. Prime is an attorney.

Democrats also nominated three candidates for the three City Council seats up for grabs in Long Beach in November. They are incumbent Robert Tepper, 35, who is an attorney with Nassau County government, and challengers Gina Guma, 49, and Lawrence Benowitz, 69.

Guma, an employee of Long Beach Medical Center, is a members of the Lions Club and the Long Beach Chamber of Commerce. Benowitz, a retired businessman, is on the Facilities Advisory Committee of the Long Beach school system, and often testifies at City Council hearings.

In Oyster Bay, the following candidates were named to run for council seats:

Carol Gordon of Massapequa, a mental health clinic manager for veteran's affairs; Jay Cherlin of Massapequa, a health facility administrator and Kth Scalia of Massapequa. Marie McCormack, an attorney from Jericho, was nominated to run for tax recver and Denise Gang, of Massapequa and an advocate against domestic violence, was nominated to run for town clerk.
