Towle Aide Hired
Legis. O'Leary hires Doyle for district office

Newly elected Suffolk lawmaker Peter O'Leary (R-Moriches) has hired William Doyle, who served as legislative aide and campaign treasurer for former Legis. Fred Towle, to work in his district office in Shirley.

Doyle, a trustee on the Shirley-Mastic-Moriches Community Library board, signed off on campaign disclosure statements for Towle, who pleaded guilty in May to recving a bribe and using campaign funds for personal use.

O'Leary, who took office Thursday, little more than a week after a narrow 341-vote victory over Democrat Carol Bissonette in a special election to fill Towle's unexpired term, said he has full confidence in Doyle.

"I wouldn't hire him if I didn't," O'Leary said. "I trust Bill Doyle implicitly."

But Bissonette, who will face O'Leary again in November, said his decision to hire Doyle runs counter to his claims of bng a political reformer. "It is perpetuation of the same old machine," she said.

Doyle began managing the finances of Towle's political action committee, Suffolk 2000, after George Rehn, a certified public account, resigned because he could not verify the sources of Towle's campaign contributions or expenses.

As treasurer of Suffolk 2000 and Brookhaven 2003, another Towle political action committee, Doyle routinely submitted disclosure statements listing thousands of dollars of unitemized credit- and debit-card expenses, despite a state election rule that such expenditures be itemized.

For instance, in March 2001 Doyle signed a report that listed $700 in undisclosed credit card expenses, $2,711 for New York Mets tickets and $5,603.19 in unspecified debit-card charges.

Last year, he submitted a report to the board of elections listing $1,540 for season tickets to the Long Island Ducks, $3,388.74 in unitemized ATM debit charges, $4,260 for an Islanders luxury box and $6,148 for Mets box-seat season tickets.

Doyle, who worked as Towle's legislative aide from July 2001 to June 2003, said that he was unaware Towle's activities were illegal, and that therefore he had done nothing improper.

"I stand by the disclosures," he said in a telephone interview last week. "I did not know that what he was doing was illegal. He had use of the bank card but he didn't tell me what he did with it."

But Lee Daghlian, spokesman for the New York State Board of Elections, said campaign treasurers are accountable for the information contained within the filings.

"They are responsible for the whole ball of wax," he said. "If we need to sue somebody we sue them."

Is Bill Doyle also the treasurer for Pete O'leary? Will he do the same things for him? It kind of fits in well. Bill didn't know about the campaign irregularities (wink, wink) and Pete didn't know the EMHP was bng overspent by 34 million dollars. How do these guy's balance thr own checkbooks? Then again they probably don't have to with all the extra income they surely bring in.
