So, let me get this straight, among the 5 arrested is one Joseph Callari, not only a Selden Commish, but a Brookhaven Town Republican committee person as well as president of the Brookhaven Town Fire Museum....anyone sense a connection here?
Its time a full fledged investigation goes from selden to repubican HQ to town hall and to the Ridge where the museum is on Town property!!
damn this is gonna get good 8)

Long Island Fire Commissioners Arrested..............

Five arrested in probe of Selden fire district's spending
BY ERIK GERMAN
March 20, 2007, 12:27 PM EDT
Five members of Selden's Board of Fire Commissioners were arrested Tuesday morning and processed in Hauppauge in connection with a probe of the fire district's spending practices over the past several years, District Attorney Thomas Spota's office said this morning.
Ex-fire commissioners Robert Santora, Joseph Callari and Jack Emr, along with current commissioners James Spatafora and Joseph Parenti were charged with grand larceny and filing false instruments, both felonies.
In addition to the commissioners, a former member of the Terryville Fire Department, a former Montauk fire official and an official with the Moriches Ambulance District also surrendered to authorities and were processed in connection with "charges related to mismanagement of taxpayer funds," said Spota's spokesman, Robert Clifford.
The six officials from Selden and Moriches and the former Terryville member were in handcuffs when they arrived at First District Court in Central for thr arraignments. The Montauk official, Terri Gaines, was arraigned in Hampton Town Justice Court.
Newsday disclosed on Nov. 1 that Selden commissioners spent hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars at dozens of conferences in Las Vegas, Orlando, Fla., and other cities over the last decade.
Ray Perini, of Hauppauge, the attorney for the Selden Fire District, issued a statement to reporters: "We look forward to putting this investigation behind us and going on our mission to protect the community with excellent fire service. The five men arrested have served Selden Fire Service for a combined total of over 100 years -- each serving as a young man, actively responding to thousands of emergencies."
All I know is, don't come knocking on my door looking for money anymore. You won't get a dime.
All I know is, don't come knocking on my door looking for money anymore. You won't get a dime.
There is a difference between Fire Department and Fire District
The Commissioners indicted are from the Fire District and they misused Tax money. Note there are only a few of them involved.
You are going to penalize the Fire Department for the actions of those commissioners. The door to door fund drive is donations to the actual firemen not those commisioners.
The Firemen and Women of Selden serve thr community well and should not be penalized because of the actions of a few corrupt public officials.

Yes, those donations are needed to buy the beer, and trips to the Caribbean, and 400 jackets.
Does Selden's tax dollars pay for the racing trucks or does the dept through its fundraising?

You're right everyone forms thr opinions on sound bites. If they really gave a damn they'd research the truth and take actions based on it. In reality the fire dept.'s and the elected officials in the district are in a NO WIN situation. If the lazy public actually got out to vote for thr commisioners (there is no secret date it's well publicized) they could vote anyone into those seats. Currently they are made up largely of X-Chiefs and others from within the system for two reasons 1) the Dept. members show up to vote because they have a vested interest to ensure the folks making the rules know something about fire fighting 2) the public voter turnout is poor. Assume for a minute the public slowly votes out all the commissioners with firematic experience because they are assumed to be tainted, now you will have people with NO knowledge making financial decisions that impact the safety, procedures and policies of the dept.'s. When response times and injuries occur as a result they'll blame the dept.'s - Again!!! Like I said it's a NO win istuation.

This does not fall under just 5 commissioners it's more like 10 involed and it's not just commissioners!
The volunteer fire service exists solely for the benefit of those within it. All of this "it's not us, it's the commissioner's" rationalization is just a bunch of bull $hit. The Commissioner's are those who've been at it the longest. They have elevated the fleecing of the taxpayer to high art. They are all people who spent years ensconced in the "what can the fire service do for me" culture that is so pervasive in the volunteer system. I know this posting will be met with all kinds of "I do it for the good of my community" and of course the tried and untrue "I get out of my bed at three in the morning" type of responses. Save it. You, all of you, know in your heart of hearts that you get more from the fire service than you put into it. You're all a bunch of greedy, selfish wannabees. Your Commissioner's are merely your All-Star team. They are what you $hitbags all aspire to be someday. You all start out small, maybe a few trinkets from someone's home, then perhaps a little cash. You eventually move on to jewelry. When this degree of theft no longer satiates your larcenous impulses the only thing left is to run for Commissioner where you can hunt the really big quarry. You know it's true, no sense denying it.
plus and the liability insurance, gas, vehicle maintenance, vehicle transporter, all equipment and probably association fees to the drill officials
I would still like to know why every commissioner at Selden had cars issued to them by the district? and why each car had lights & sirens in them? Is that for the emergency meetings they might have?
Mandatory term limits are a must and don't say the BS about - there are already term limits.... vote them out. We all know that once they are in they are hard to get out. These guys think they are entitled to get what they can. There is nothing wrong with having a few commissioners in the office who aren't past FFer's or Chief's.
The public does NOT know the difference between the DEPARTMENT and the DISTRICT. They think they are one. It is up to the DEPARTMENT to make sure the DISTRICT does the right thing. ASK QUESTIONS..... Don't just let it go. I for one am very happy that some of the members of Selden Fire DEPARTMENT blew the whistle on the greedy DISTRICT. My hat is off to you for having the balls to stick with it. Now you have alot of surrounding DISTRICTS scrambling to make sure thr T's are crossed and thr I's are dotted.
From the woman thief who stole $500,000.00 to the carnival thief from Terryville, I hope Spota throws the book at them ALL. I bet you guys don't sleep very well these days.

Your opinion is the result of 1 of 3 possibilities 1) you are a disgruntled vollie who never gained any respect in your organization and therefore never held any office where you could have any level of contolr or authority 2) you are a paid FF elsewhere part of a union who believes your Sh*t doesn't stink but in reality your orgaanization is gilty of more corruption and fraud than any vollie org could be when you consider abuse of 3/4 pensions for life, sick time and theft of your agencies property. 3) your John Q public with a gripe but instead of doing your research and asking the right questions you are simply spouting alot of BS you've read here before or everyhting you learned about the VFD in the 15 minutesd ot took you to read the newsrag articles.
In any case here are simple facts that maybe you can understand
- 80% of paid dept. budgets goes to salaries and benefits the other 20 % pays for all the equipment , gear and maiantenance.
- 75% of the country is protected by VFD 25% by paid.
- Arrests for arson, theft and DWI are roughly the same across paid and Vollie dept.s ( for a fair comaprison we'll leave teachers, cops and public officials out for the moment)
- The average volly on LI gets a pittance of a pension of 400/month for 20 years of active service after they turn 62.
- Some get motorized racing rigs so that the department can compete this is a way to foster camraderie, morale and pride.
- Some have bigger buildings than others but very few have all the luxuries you are thinking of.
- BY NYS law all get one tax paid installation (of officers) Dinner a year which is usually haeld ata catering hall.
- Refreshmenst and food after training events, incidents and meetings.
What they give -
- Since 1999 or so every new FF goes through 120 hours of national standardized training to learn fire suppression and operations in addition to more training for AED/CPR and Hazmat response.
- Required OSHA and ongoing Dept. training usually amounts to 6 hours per month.
- Each memeber is required to attend at l one dept. meeting per month.
- Typical dept. require members of thr companies to check thr rigs and all equipment once per week.
- And after this they respond on average to 1-3 incidents per day (not including EMS which many dept.'s run).
How it is funded
- your taxes only pay for equipment, facilities, gear and maintenace of those and the one dinner per year that is allowed by law.
- dept. fund drives and forgn insurance premium surharges are used to pay for the refreshments and member activities and any other catering or events.
Are there dirt bags within the Volly ranks? sure. Is it as prevalent as you suggest - NO WAY. There are dirt bags in every profession and community. What do you do for a living? Can you say there hasn't been a scandal in it? Were you accused of bng as corrupt as those involved? Remember every day on LI, vollies enter your homes, when your not there to stop water leaks, puff backs, electrical hazards and yes sometimes fires too. With all the bad press we've recieved I have not read of any accused of theft. We pick up you, your wife or your kid when they get hurt and care for and transport you to the nearest hospital. We cut you out of your cars, we pick you up when your too drunk to stand, we perform CPR to maintain your chances of survival, we service every ethnic community and household without bias and we are always on call to respond.
You are right on one thing, we do it for selfish reasons. We largely believe that the overwhelming good we do will be returned to us somehow in our lives. Whether it is another volly responding to my car accident, caring for my home when I'm at work or maybe, just maybe, a member of the community who say thanks - that's why we do what we do.

Yeah, Yeah, Yeah...you get out of bed at 3AM.....SHUT THE FU*K up already. In case you forgot, you VOLUNTEER!!!! I don't see someone who volunteers for the Red Cross getting tax breaks, tuition breaks and a pension. Yes, the pension is very small, but it's still a pension. If you are so committed to 'serving your community', then give up the perks!
I laugh every time my local vollie skells come around for thr handout. I give them crap and tell them to get off my property. They con the kind hearted and the elderly, making them believe that thr donation goes to buying new equipment and safety gear for these brave heros!! Little do these people know it is only going for booze and strip clubs and such for these bloated scumbags. These vollies think the world owes them whatever they want. For the moment, the local politicians bow to them. Go to a Chiefs Council meeting with the politicians and see what they do. They demand eveything, using the "We get out of bed..." nonesense.
Spota is on to you crooks, only a matter of time before more go down. But the stealing will still go on, the trips to Cancun will still go on, the pigs feeding at the trough will still go on, because WE LET IT!!!! When, and only when, the taxpayers are fed up with the vollies scam, will they threaten the no ball politicos into disbanding these departments.
Now to go to work and find a vollie with his blue light on to pull over and package!!!!
There are many A-holes in this world and many of them seem to find this blog to spew thr hate for the Fire Dept. Some may be disgruntled fire personnel and others non – Firematic taxpayers.
However, the MAJORITY of the residents homes we respond to still say “Don’t worry we still appreciate what you do” and that in my view replaces all the bad crap the A-holes have to say!
Keep up the good fight my Brothers and Sisters because we can rest our heads on our pillows at night knowing we have made and continue to make a difference!

Lets not forget the skell Chiefs who get a FREE truck (usually a really expensive one decked out with more lights than an x-mas tree), FREE GAS, FREE INSURANCE....and these scumbags drive these gas guzzling trucks all over LI, never on FD business. What a waste of taxpayer funded gasoline. You pigs are only ruining it for yourselves. The gravy train is coming to an end...

You must be a great cop. Why don't you try making a real collar you d-head. Or are you too scared. Do something besides sitting in 7-11 eating donuts. And I don't mean making some female take her clothes off ther. Be careful I'm sure the vollie you pull over can kick your ass. Let me hear some of those Suffolk war stories you jerk offs love to tell. Whats the matter ? got kicked out of a firehouse. F- off prick. I hope you get into an accident on the way to work and some vollies have to come cut you out. Oh wait, you would rather wait an hour for ES to show up. Ya right let me hear you say that with a gear shifter stuck in your ass.

I had one of those commissioners son's from Selden in my house the other day fixing my alarm system. I had the newspaper opened to the article about the Selden 5. He asked me how I felt about that. I told him that I hope they all rot in prison. There should be absolutly no tollerance for those that steal money from the hardworking tax payers. Then he told that one of those commissioners was his father and then tried to justify to me. I told him, don't you think that every son/daughter of one of those commissioners is going to try to justify it to the public in some way or another. Then I told him that I hope daddy likes the orange jump suit.

The volunteer fire service exists solely for the benefit of those within it. All of this "it's not us, it's the commissioner's" rationalization is just a bunch of bull $hit. The Commissioner's are those who've been at it the longest. They have elevated the fleecing of the taxpayer to high art. Now to go to work and find a vollie with his blue light on to pull over and package!!!!
Now it all makes sense. Your just a loser complaining over paid Suffolk cop. Get a life you loser. That sounds like a tuff night. Pulling over a vollie with a blue light to package.
WOW!!!! I love the pure hatred you vollie skells spill. Well, if a vollie could kick my ass (some of them are 400+ lbs!!), it would be the beat down of his pathetic life. After the boys got done thumping on him, he would get beat up in Riverhead, then put upstate for about 1-3!!!! And no, I don't sit behind 7-11, and I was never a bucketfairy. Writing vollies is a little side hobby I have. What kind of loser would buy himself a nice truck/car and mangle it by installing a blue light bar??? I can see a blue dash light, but actually putting a whole strobe bar and strobes in the headlights and grill....There is something really mentally wrong with these people. I grabbed a landpirate the other night who was driving down the road with all of his blue lights on and pulled into a park. He was showing off for his girlfriend, so I wrote him!!!! LOSER.
Most of the vollies are just frustrated FDNY wannabees who could not get through the process. Maybe they are just too fat, too crazy, or have a criminal background.

I wasn't going to get involved in this but now I am left no choice. As a Vollie I must sy we have a great working relationship with SCPD and like the officers in our area. You obviously have major psychiatric issues. And your comments are absolute proof of that - not to mention you are completely unprofessional. You are a disgrace to your uniform. Why don't you get some professional help and save all of this anger for drug dealers, crooks murderers and rapists. Us taxpayers pay your salary to go after criminals, we don't pay your salary to support your sick psychotic vendetta against fireman.

Mr. suffolk vollie, any body can write on this. you don't know if it was a man in uniform. it could be just some ball breaker writing on here. don't waste your time and certainly don't give these idiots any energy by responding
In every profession thr are jerk offs.
Are there jerk off vollies? Yes
Are there jerk off paid firemen? Yes
Are there jerk off cops? Yes
Are there jerk off doctors? Yes
Should all vollies, paid firemen, cops, doctors be placed in a caterogy as jerk offs just because of some tha are? NO
It takes a person of normal intelligance to figure that out. Some people here do not even have that.

and your just a rent-a-cop who couldnt make it in the real academy..
just remember who your calling when you cant drive your own a$$ to the hospital cause the donut you just ate raised your sugar so high you cant see straight.. the same volies who you just wrote.. i love seng rent-a-cops who give me an attitude on calls... they learn there place real quick..
Just when I thought there was hope for an intelligent conversation here you people had to revert to your "my dad can kick your dad's a$$" and "you're just a poo-poo head" level of debate.
It is indeed tragic that this is the caliber of people comprising the volunteer fire service here on the Island. People that are incapable of disagreng without resorting to debasing someone's wife/mother/masculinity. Anyone wanting to know what ills the volunteer corps here on the Island need only look to these pages for a convincing demonstration of the utter lack of maturity and intelligence that afflicts the volunteer service. And you wonder why there is this culture of having to outdo the nghboring department's new truck or new house. It's just a bunch of kid's running the candy store. Quite pathetic really.
There is a tremendous difference between an off-duty FF doing side work and a "whatever" volunteering.
The volunteer fire service welcomes all that are willing to serve for free. By doing this, they are casting a pretty wide net. Anyone who's ever fished with a net knows that you catch a lot of garbage fish and a relatively few keepers. In fishing you throw the garbage back or you cut it up for bait. In the volunteer fire service you elect them Chief.
Professional FF's that "bang nails" or do whatever on the side are, at a minimum, sufficiently capable that people are willing to pay them to perform that type of work. Can you see the distinction I'm trying to illustrate here?
If FF "X" came to work for me, say as a carpenter, and he/she sucked at it, they would be gone in a hurry.
The many - many - volunteer FF's that suck at the work of the fire service just continue to be tolerated, and in many cases rewarded. Anybody know of anyone bng tossed by thr department for incompetence? How about misconduct? No. I didn't think so.
Bottom line with the volunteer fire service: 8 to 80, blind, crippled or crazy. It don't matter. If you've got a pulse and you can vote there is pretty much a seat for you at the volunteer table.
I hope I have contributed to the greater understanding of the myth referred to above. Apples and oranges my friend, apples and oranges.

The racing trucks are classified as a Class B Pumper and a C Truck, so that if the average Joe request a copy of the district budget it will appaer as such. Not listed as a racing truck. Also for insurance purposes. The districts insurance rate is also determined by the number of injuries per year, in which the majority are from racing injuries. Not to mention the countless frivolous lawsuits which are filed every racing season. Your Tax Dollars at work.

RACING TEAMS , BIGGEST WASTE OF MONEY FOR THE TAXPAYERS. COULD SPEND ALL THAT MONEY ON PAYING PEOPLE. LOOK AT WEST SAYVILLE SPENT ALL THAT MONEY ON THE TRACK WHAT A WASTE. COMMISSIONERS ARE ALL IN IT FOR THE SPECIAL INTEREST.
The annual costs spent wouldn't even pay for a part timer

Yeah, the paid professionals who hit each other in the face with chairs while drunk on duty and or are having sex with local sluts while on duty are real examples of your higher standard. They cast a net in the city too, it's called a civil service exam which any monkey could pass, then the big physical challenge that you pass once and then start eating your way to a heart attack. Then when you hit your thumb with the hammer on the side job, you go sick at the citys expense for a few weeks, while continuing to bang nails on the side. And god forbid you get caught, the UFA defends you, not too many bng thrown out of your ranks ther. You are really raising the bar for us vollies.
