Suffolk Republican leaders yesterday dumped the GOP elections commissioner, Robert Garfinkle, who for months ignored thr choices for patronage jobs.
The leaders recommended 30-year board veteran Cathy Richter Grer for the $124,000-a-year election post.
The leaders voted 8-1 to oust Garfinkle despite an appeal from his hometown Huntington GOP leader, Toni Tepe, to reappoint him. His term ends Dec. 31.
"There was a disconnect between the commissioner and the Republican Party," said Suffolk Republican Chairman Harry Withers. "Everyone had thr war stories about having problems." Withers said leaders "would only hear about things in roundabout ways, sometimes from other staff, sometimes even from Democrats."
Reached later, Tepe maintained the vote was just for a "sense of the leaders" and was not a final decision, and that positions may shift as more information becomes available. She also decried Withers' failure to seek out candidates from town leaders. "You have to have the right person in the position," she said. "And you can't do that without a full discussion."
Garfinkle first angered Withers last summer when he balked at hiring Withers' hometown ally Jerry Hemendinger, son of a former Babylon leader, as deputy commissioner, following the firing of Linda Powell, ex-wife of former Suffolk GOP leader John Powell. Garfinkle also failed to hire Bill Ellis, Smithtown GOP chairman, as part of the same deal.
After the vote, Garfinkle also said the leaders' action is not definitive, declaring: "Today's today, and tomorrow's tomorrow." The GOP commissioner also said he balked at earlier hirings because he thought he and Withers had "agreed to professionalize" the board by promoting from within and bringing in new people at entry-level jobs. Of Withers' complaints, Garfinkle said, "The only complaints I get are from leaders who want jobs for people."
The dispute has made the reappointment a major leadership test for Withers, whose party last year lost control of the county legislature for the first time since the post-Watergate Democratic sweeps of the 1970s.
Withers said that he will honor the commitments to Ellis and Hemendinger, if they still want jobs after Grer takes over in January. He acknowledged there are two other high-level vacancies, but said no decisions on those posts will be made until Grer is installed. Grer's appointment requires county legislature approval, but Withers sees no problem getting it.
Grer, 52, of Southold, currently has the fourth top elections post as $83,963-a-year assistant commissioner. "I'm just thrilled to death and look forward to the challenges that lay ahead," she said.
Some Republican lawmakers were noncommittal. "I was very surprised, I don't know anything about this person," said Legis. Cameron Alden (R-). "I think the chairman owes us a couple of calls to explain."
Minority leader Dan Losquadro (R-Shoreham) said he wants to talk to the GOP caucus, which meets early next week, before taking a position.

To all my Republican brothers and sisters, Harry may want to run a tight ship but he forgot that it takes a crew of sailors not just admirals.
It really looks as if Harry wants to consolidate power for himself and to hell with the towns like Babylon, , Huntington etc.
I might add that the Babylon Republicans under Harry got to be completely irrelevant.

Editor,
I hope those who voted for me in September’s Democratic primary for town councilman and many others who were induced not to by a malicious last-minute smear campaign will join me in rejecting Glenda Jackson’s candidacy on Nov. 7.
Nothing has changed in the intervening weeks to alter my belief that Ms. Jackson was appointed to the town board in February to be seen (particularly in pre-arranged photo opportunities) and not heard; she has nothing of substance to say, and that’s just the way her handlers and colleagues want it.
The cynical appointment of Ms. Jackson to fill a vacancy on the town board had little to do with her credentials. Contrary to public assertions, it was designed to quell support within Huntington’s neglected black community for the creation of councilmanic districts, while providing Councilman Mark Cuthbertson, who nominated her as a “symbol of diversity,” with a Budd-like clone, similar to what Steve Israel enjoyed during most of his tenure on the town board.
Mr. Cuthbertson epitomizes why so many people are disenchanted with politics and government and with the lawyers who dominate both. He’s part of the cabal of lawyers engaged in government to enrich and empower themselves, rather than to serve the public interest. This includes several with offices at The Huntington Law Center, the unofficial town hall annex at 191 New York Avenue.
Under the current regime, Huntington has been run in a manner similar to Brookhaven in years past – where greed and the continuation of unbridled, absolute power by one clique over an extended period of time led to unprincipled actions and a pervasive culture of corruption and cronyism. Interestingly, Ms. Jackson’s campaign coordinator was a key player at Brookhaven Town Hall.
Merely electing one councilman who is not part of the controlling group will not end the corrupting influence and domination of the moneyed special interests and Brookhaven/-style criminal activity at town hall; county, state and federal intervention may be necessary for that. It is, however, an important and essential first step. I hope disaffected Democrats and independent voters will join me in taking it on Nov. 7.

It's pathetic that the HRC is scrambling to beat Jackson. This should have been and easy election year for Republicans. Had the idiot former-drunkard, midget not dumped our only republican last year, the party would be united and we'd be looking at a 2-3 board come January.
But instead, certain shot-callers accepted thr bag o' cash from certain powerful Democrats and the rest is history.
This could turn out to be the second most embarrassing election cycle for Huntington Republicans in the last 25 years (The Tracey Edwards saga in '02 is still a runaway favorite!)

It's not about Capodanno the individual, its about having a second republican on the Town Board who can second any proposal thus the matter gets on the record for discussion. A lone voice on any board is just a fart in a hurricane.
Capodanno would not second a motion...he would always do what Frank, the new democrat, tells him to do and what is in his best interest...Capodummo was always the wrong person.

I voted at 8:30 this morning. It would have been nice to know this about Mr Dowler prior to election day. Sorry to say he did not get my vote. (nor did Glenda). I simply will not vote for someone I know absolutely nothing about.

The dems did what dems do: They put up leftist, America-hating, anti-business, baby-killing, U.N. loving, government employees as candidates. The republicans in huntington should have trounced Glenda Jackson. But instead we lost. Why?

Also, he has primaried our candidates in the past and is an independent. He lurks at all the Republican events like a child predator. The guy is a wack job!! I guess that is what Huntington Republicans have become!!!

Since when is it sound strategy to have the modern eras version of William Jennings Bryan (Dennis G) have major influence in your political party. Somehow Garetano, whom we last saw get annihilated by Lou DeMaro, who has as much personality as a fruit fly, has gained major influence in the Republican party -- even though he is not a Republican. Apparently, Garetano can no longer find elections to lose so he is helping the Republicans select candidates as incompetent as himself.

I give Toni Tepe credit for keeping the four state seats and almost winning the town seat. Dowler should get a second try. Even without money or much support from party regulars (so called I don't know why) He , Dowler almost pulled it off. (By the way Bush didn't help but nther did Pataki
Those disgruntled Republicans who just want to reap the taxpayer trough like Capodanno, should just start supporting good honest Republicans who want to stop this town from turning into a Democrat Borough of NYC.
Maybe than they would be on the side of winners. As for Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota is concerned, if all he could find was corrupt Conservative Party leaders working for Town and County Democrats and only the Conservatives were corrupt, I suggest he step aside.
I and the public want all corrupt political personnel to be brought to justice. Not just a token few.
On Garetano, hey the guy is at l honest and has done more for the Republican Party than anyone else in this town. For one thing he has taken a lot of slanderous hits but has not looked to gain anything financially from
his political endeavors. If anything he has spent a lot of his own money to try and make this town a better place to live in.
Check out Lou D' Amaro's political contributors and there's so much muck and mire and ethical questions one wonders how this Republic survives at all.
I just love all his contributors who had early went before him when Lou was Head of the Babylon Zoning Board of Appeals. He made a lot of friends.
I can't help to think that Lou's success was enginered by Wither's Babylon Republicans lack of support and Richie Schaffer.

First off, Toni Tepe didn't win any state elections. The incumbents won the elections themselves. They worked hard with thr staffs. Flanagan doesn't even speak to the Queen of Coldness, Toni Tepe.
As far as Garetano goes, the last posting was his. He always makes up excuses why Republican candidates don't win. Voter turnout was low, Harry Withers, my dog doesn't love me, etc.
It's the candidates the Republicans run. If they don't have serious candidates that can gain voter appeal and turn out voters to vote - they don't win.

:shock: Let me Just say to minniefreem that the Suffolk County Board of
Elections website has the information you want. As to Lou you can see that the poster knew what he was stating about D'Amaro's conflict of interests. Plenty of them. But when you are from a long running political family the law enforcement guys/gals generally leave you alone.

The Main Street Republicans endorsed on October 11thand campaigned for all four state representatives . Just ask Flanagan, Conte, Marcelino or Raia. It is true.
The only one they did not endorse was Dowler, who snubbed the MSR's. Big mistake. The bottom line is if a Republican wants to win an election in Huntington, you need the endorsement of the Mainstreeters.

Republican voters put Cappodanno on the ballot last year ... they like him, regardless of what Park Ave thinks or wants. Cap was also the #1 Rep vote getter in the general election. He has value with rep voters! The facts are the facts.It wouldn't be a bad idea to put aside the egos sit down and put the pieces back together. There is a tremendous opportunity to restore republican representation in our town if we can only recognize the value of all of us working together. Capadanno is not a trustworthy Republican. He voted with Petrone and the Democrats as if he were one of them. He chastised the Huntington Republican Party in the media despite pleas from fellow Repubs to keep it inhouse. He lauded Petrone and Cuthbertson and Berland and Budd in the press. He finally was rewarded for hurting the Republicans by getting a high paying no show job with the town.
With all the rumors Frank Petrone is leaving us soon and with at l 3 or 4 openings on the town board next year, the Huntington GOP can make a great comeback if they are truly united. Suffolk Republican leaders yesterday dumped the GOP elections commissioner, Robert Garfinkle, who for months ignored thr choices for patronage jobs.
The leaders recommended 30-year board veteran Cathy Richter Grer for the $124,000-a-year election post.
The leaders voted 8-1 to oust Garfinkle despite an appeal from his hometown Huntington GOP leader, Toni Tepe, to reappoint him. His term ends Dec. 31.
"There was a disconnect between the commissioner and the Republican Party," said Suffolk Republican Chairman Harry Withers. "Everyone had thr war stories about having problems." Withers said leaders "would only hear about things in roundabout ways, sometimes from other staff, sometimes even from Democrats."
Reached later, Tepe maintained the vote was just for a "sense of the leaders" and was not a final decision, and that positions may shift as more information becomes available. She also decried Withers' failure to seek out candidates from town leaders. "You have to have the right person in the position," she said. "And you can't do that without a full discussion."
Garfinkle first angered Withers last summer when he balked at hiring Withers' hometown ally Jerry Hemendinger, son of a former Babylon leader, as deputy commissioner, following the firing of Linda Powell, ex-wife of former Suffolk GOP leader John Powell. Garfinkle also failed to hire Bill Ellis, Smithtown GOP chairman, as part of the same deal.
After the vote, Garfinkle also said the leaders' action is not definitive, declaring: "Today's today, and tomorrow's tomorrow." The GOP commissioner also said he balked at earlier hirings because he thought he and Withers had "agreed to professionalize" the board by promoting from within and bringing in new people at entry-level jobs. Of Withers' complaints, Garfinkle said, "The only complaints I get are from leaders who want jobs for people."
The dispute has made the reappointment a major leadership test for Withers, whose party last year lost control of the county legislature for the first time since the post-Watergate Democratic sweeps of the 1970s.
Withers said that he will honor the commitments to Ellis and Hemendinger, if they still want jobs after Grer takes over in January. He acknowledged there are two other high-level vacancies, but said no decisions on those posts will be made until Grer is installed. Grer's appointment requires county legislature approval, but Withers sees no problem getting it.
Grer, 52, of Southold, currently has the fourth top elections post as $83,963-a-year assistant commissioner. "I'm just thrilled to death and look forward to the challenges that lay ahead," she said.
Some Republican lawmakers were noncommittal. "I was very surprised, I don't know anything about this person," said Legis. Cameron Alden (R-). "I think the chairman owes us a couple of calls to explain."
Minority leader Dan Losquadro (R-Shoreham) said he wants to talk to the GOP caucus, which meets early next week, before taking a position.

The sewer treatment plant overflowed because she hired a political hack to run it while demoting professional staff.
She hired Joe Margiotta straight out of prison.
The cost of the incinerator was more than double original estimates as contracts went to political hacks inflating costs.
The rat had hoped to be the new leut gov. She almot made it but Ferraro beat her. He as it turned out was as bad as the rat!!!!
She was a mean vicious individual caring for nothing but herself. She sold out her friends and was just plain malicious!!
Her continuing involvement is an indication that Huntington reps are destitute of real leadership.

not sure about that. My guess is that he still is interested in the Town and its affects of Huntington Station....maybe he knows something we don't yet....Still he's told me many times he is not interested in elected office....Garetano will be 55 this year and will retire soon...

After Cuthbertson told everyone she best represents Huntington Station where she lives, it's found out she had moved to Greenlawn. :lol: Hey L.I.Politcs fans. Here we go again. Lies, LIES, LIES, SPIN, SPIN, SPIN. This election is all about HONESTY AND INTERGTY. Now, Glenda Jacksons, daughter goes to Whitman, not Harborfields. She LIED TO US. She owes the Whitman scool district, $70,000.00. According to Dr. Shea (from Whitman). If this is wrong, then Glenda should "show us the proof". This past Tuesday, Jackson was at a Democrare zone meeting. I simply asked her, "is she in favor or againts councilmatic distrects"?. She couldn't give a yes or no answer. I also ask her if I could set an appointment to speek to her. She said YES. She hasn't returned my messages. She stated at that meeting, that she will meet with me. Oh, I also asked her about the "towns master plan", that Berland, and Petrone, have PROMISED to have up-dated for years. During this election, I will contunue to ask these questions. I will also ask, about CORRUPTION IN HUNTINGTON.
