NEWSDAY Editorial endorses McQuade for NYS Assembly
20th DISTRICT
Southwest Nassau
One of the most recognizable public figures on the South Shore, Assemb. Harvey Wsenberg (D-Long Beach) is seeking a ninth term in Albany. Despite his formidable presence and his seniority in the party, Wsenberg's leadership on issues that directly affect his community continues to disappoint.
Republican opponent Francis McQuade, 52, a long-time political activist and attorney in the city, is hardly a fresh face but he still has the zeal of a reformer.
At this point in his career, Wsenberg seems to have too little interest in trying to tackle some of the area's problems. While he supported the now-rejected Army Corps of Engineers project to stop beach erosion, Wsenberg seems too weary to develop a fresh solution to the area's flooding concerns as well as the city's deteriorating infrastructure. His critics say the veteran lawmaker also is not focusing on such key issues as gang violence and the lack of insurance for the coastal area.
Wsenberg, 72, has a well-deserved reputation advocating for special education students and he sponsored legislation requiring defibrillators in all schools. But he needs to broaden his focus.
McQuade, who has lost prior races for the county legislature and the city council, says his Albany priorities are "Silver and gold." He wants to challenge the leadership of Speaker Sheldon Silver while controlling spending and reducing taxes.
A former Roman Catholic priest, McQuade favors more support for private schools, such as vouchers. He also favors restricting access to abortion.
Newsday did not endorse in this district in the past two elections. McQuade, however, is an engaged and energetic candidate who stepped forward to hold Wsenberg accountable for his limited record. He is clever enough to shake things up locally and in Albany. Newsday endorses McQuade.

Harvey Wsenberg is clearly been affected by the political campaign challenger Frank McQuade has engaged him in.
Harvey seemed almost annoyed he had to answer to the audience last night at a LOWV Debate in Hewlitt despite recving several softball questions.
It is way too early to tell, but McQuade could defy conventional wisdom and take this seat if this current political process plays itself out.
As for McQuade, he appeared to be focused, well spoken and thoughtful. McQuade's responses were consistent and articulated issues that the audience supported such as School Vouchers and Charter Schools.
Can you imagine an incumbent Assembly Democrat losing his or her seat in a year when Democrats are scheduled to dominate Republicans in New York and Nationally?
No wonder Wiesenberg is losing a great deal of sleep?

Nice commentary? Attack the people you disagree with but God forbid you attack thr rationale and balanced argument that while Wiesenberg has been dedicated to the disabled, he does nothing for the man in the street.
Wsenberg communicates how he, Assemblyman Wsenberg led the passage of a law requiring Defibulators in every school in the State of New York. Wsenberg informs the public how this bill has saved as many as seven lives.
However, Wsenberg does not inform the public he placed the cost or as it it referred to as an "UNFUNDED MANDATE' down to you the taxpayer. Despite a $113 Billion NYS Budget, Wsenberg couldn't be bothered to attach the funding to provide for this equipment.
Do you think Harvey and the NYS Dems recved some generous donations from the Defibulator companies?
Newsday put Harvey on notice 4years ago, and he thought he would never be challenged based on his nice guy / FOS personality.
Now Harvey is in the political fight of his 30 year career and he has no one to blame other than himself.
Who is the knucklehead who tore down a McQuade sign by the Island Park train station yesterday?
THE 55MPH WIND

Just a 55mph wind; you sir are an ass!
Feel however you want about the Ws, bottom line is he's going to be swept back in on the strength of the Spitzer juggernaut. To suggest, as some here do, that voters are so unhappy with Harvey that they are going to go off the Dem line and pull for McQuade is just plain stupid. Frank is a fundamentally decent guy. Harvey is pretty much a dinosaur. It doesn't matter. Harvey and every other Dem (Hevesi included) are going to make it in a walk. It's just not going to be a good year to be a Rep candidate here in NY state.

Harvey came out for Gay marriage. It seems like he lost it. I guess this is a winning issue in his district with its orthodox Jewish community and Christian community.
Looking at some of the numbers, it looks like he is in trouble. Its possible he may benefit some from Spitzer ( who looks like a angry Mickey Mouse), however he seems to be fumbling.
Weisenberg not bothered..

Wsenberg is not bothered with McQuade. Wsenberg is already confiding to friends and supporters he expects to kick McQuade's political ass on the coattails of likely Governor Eliot Spitzer's election. Wsenberg is having the last laugh as he was concerned if Suozzi had won the nomination and sponsored a likely primary against him. Harvey can really pick the political pro's who know how to win.

There have never been any coat tails in a NY Governors race. If say, please cite one. If harvey wins, it will be sheer luck. He has lost it and is nothing more that a place holder in an office seat.

Silver and Wsenberg!
I am deeply disappointed with the Assembly Speaker Silver and my Assemblyman, Harvey Wsenberg for covering up for aide and alleged rapist J. Michael Boxley
New York State has been defined by a history of partisan voting districts, well financed campaign war chests and strong public relations that are responsible for distorting thr performance as public servants. This self serving process contributes to the confusion that often dominates elections and permits the relection of incumbents who have been ineffective. Let there be no confusion this November.
In 2001, former Assembly staffer Elizabeth Crothers, then 24 years of age working as an aide to Assemblyman Manning, alleged that Boxley raped her in similar fashion. Formal criminal charges were never brought, but Crothers did file an internal Assembly complaint.
Silver informed Crothers he would have the case investigated by Deputy Majority Counsel William Collins. Collins owed his position to Silver and was also a subordinate to Boxley.
The investigation was nothing more than Collins interviewing Ms. Crothers and his boss, Boxley. While Collins was taking Crothers statement, she maintains Silver telephoned Collins three times and on two of the occasions Collins left the room to speak with privately to Silver. Silver, issued a public statement declaring Boxley would be exonerated.
In June 2003, a 22 year old woman described by the authorities as an Assembly employee was allegedly raped by a top aide to Assembly Speaker Silver, J. Michael Boxley. According to District Attorney Paul Clyne, the woman who was raped “described a situation where she felt overcome with an odd sensation, disoriented, entirely inconsistent with the consumption of alcohol. She lost consciousness at one point during the incident.”
During the execution of a search warrant at Boxley’s Albany apartment police discovered a large bottle of pills determined to be a combination of Tylenol and codne, for which Boxley did not possess a prescription. Authorities disclosed that they suspected the substance was used as a date rape drug.
Assemblyman Harvey Wsenberg defended Silver and Boxley with “it’s not the responsibility of the institution – what happens off campus.” Let there be no confusion this November. I am deeply disappointed with the Assembly Speaker Silver and my Assemblyman, Harvey Wsenberg for thr attempted defense of this repugnant situation.
Harvey, did you have to defend Boxley or Silver?
Why Harvey?

Why did you open your mouth and defend this slime? Why?
