Finally a Commissioner with some balls. Someone whotells the taxpayers what is going on. I hope more Commissioners come forward.

NOTE to taxpayers vote for the person come this December who has the taxpayer in mind and not someone who will rubberstamp what the other Commissioners want. Pick someone with a backbone.

Yeah, elected by the residents and disgruntled members, gonna change things, make the world a better place. So he has to go to the newspaper? Obviously ineffective can't sway any votes to the positive, what was it a fistfight in the board room? Elect someone else. What was his resolution on the budget, where is he in the minutes on all the expenses during the work session, can make a resolution in a heartbeat by requiring permissive referendums and can do it alone allowing others to look like fools if they stop him in the record. And what District Budget requires the listing of what specific expenditures are to come out of the equipment reserve fund at the time the tax levy is presented as long as it is within the spending limit allowed on the calculations from the State as to the spending limit? None, he just decided to tell everyone what the others were thinking because they don't get along, great way to stop that later, gain even more votes for common sensce, maybe he will be invited to the meeting when they actually buy it.

You people don't need someone with backbone, It seems you need a new accountant and five people with a clue if a hose tender was a line item in the tax budget, rather than a permissive later in the year and argued about in the minutes. Makes every well run District look like crap and puts yet another law to impeade a normally workable system. Can't stand to see it, you all are killing yourselves slowly.

All Fire Districts need oversight. The party is over; start working for the taxpayer and not for the good old boy network. If you all don’t get with the changing times jail terms will be in your futures.

Well what I dont get is its a $2.9 million increase. The bedget hasn't been raised in 10 years or so? OK, and the amount the contraversy was over was about 10% of the increase (you rocket scientist still with me?). Now take out the money to do the rec rooms over because who knows how long its been since they've been updated or worked on and the pay raise bringing the guy from a terrible 30,000 to a better 42,000 (which you still can't live and raise a family off of in LI) and your left with the 55,000 for the racing truck. This is the only thing I agree with. If you want to race raise the money yourself, don't use tax money. I mean hose and nozzles are 1 thing but a new rig is somethings else. Regardless the guy never should have taken it to the papers. All this over $55,000 thats 2% of the total budget increase

I agree but what is lost here that if he didn’t say anything then the public won’t have known and that the problem. I have no problem if you need to buy stuff but the TAXPAYERS need to know. You as Commissioners have a duty to keep the public informed. If you don’t then you violate your oath of office. You are not just there for the members of you Department; you are there for EVERYONE in your Districts. So to all the Commissioners of Nassau and Suffolk remember why you are there, not for the Political bosses that put you there, for the drill team who helped you get elected or for the fact that not come out to vote but the Department. You still have a duty to the taxpayer not just the Department. If you were do your job in the first place then those new laws wouldn’t have been needed, THINK ABOUT IT.

The poster before you, it's not a 2.9 MM increase that is the total budget. Yeah probably a typo but thats all people will read, same as newsday. Yes it is a 20 + percent increase in property taxes for fire, but that is still relatively small if they held the line for a number of years. What the disgruntled Commissioner is harping on as well as newsday is the racing car and the rec rooms along with evidently his pet project to provide paid EMS around the clock. Which they have, but not to his standards. As to your comment, the purchase of the hose tender was, will be advertised in a legal notice for public comment as are all purchases of that type and always have. Think about it, if the taxpayer took the time to watch the special districts as much as they bitch once and awhile along side an obviously ineffective gadfly that they probably didn't vote for and is pissed when he can't get his way, come on, think about it. Look at the Nassau County Legislature a cast of clowns and the joke of the nation, New York State legislature can't pass a budget on time for how many years, Suffolk Legislature worried about illegal aliens and you want more oversight from these people on special districts? Yeah, if we were to do our job in the first place....
THINK ABOUT IT..

Who are the commissioners who voted this guy in??? I can't believe it but then again, politics is a nasty sport!!

10-08-2006, 03:40 PM
90% of the voters are fire persons. non fire person eligible voters are to lazy to help themselves. Thats why all districts can get away with what they are doing. If more and why not. If they don't care then screw 'em. As a commissioner I would not concern myself with thos people

as stated above that is why we have these new laws because Commissioners don't care about the Taxpayer. Change your ways or jail maybe in someones future.

That's what board meetings are for...they can't spend money unless the vote for the expenditure is done in public session..alot of people go to the school board meetings, if not to voice thr opinion, to at l see where thr tax dollars go..can't say the same about the fire districts..nobody cares (look at the attendance at the meetings). As for the new laws, If everyone was honest & trustworthy, we wouldn't need the justice system. But we all know, some people don't play fair...and for the most part, alot of the writers here are disgruntled members/employees that are pissed off because they didn't get a 6% raise so that thr career as a janitor doesn't help get thr salaries up to 6 figures or members who are asked to actually do something in the firehouse and contribute to the FD....

Yeah, people go to School Board meetings because the school districts account for 65% of the average taxpayers tax bill, another 20% goes to the County for Police protection. The bottom line is that the Fire District Taxes are the smallest portion of the tax bill, in most cases less than $300. per year for both ambualnce and fire protection - not bad when you consider the average school tax bill in suffolk is over $6500. So there's no wonder why school board meetings are well attended and fire district meetings are like ghost towns.

10-17-2006, 07:06 PM
It makes sense - but why not come down and see what goes on here as well? The commissioners at my fire dept. are counting on your busy schedules to keep you away.

Not EVERY school district or EVERY fire district is corrupt and stealing money.
Some are. Most school districts cost A LOT more than the HIGHEST budgeted fire district. Both serve the community. Both have good and bad members. Some are more, some less efficient than others. Some have the latest and geratest tools and equipment others do not. Some have palatial buildings others do not. Sorry to ruin this thread with FACTS.
