Bush is not pushing a vote, and nther is the leadership of ther party. The Dems know this is a losing issue for them, and in any case, there's no way in hell this bill would make it out of the House Judiciary Committee short of a miracle. Bush is paying lip-service to look moderate on the issue, because he knows the backlash against him in the pro-2nd amendment community would be massive if he were to sign a ban into law or actively work to have it brought to the floor in Congress.

Though House Majority Leader Tom DeLay says "The votes in the House are not there" to renew the measure, Fnstn and Schumer have introduced a bill in the Senate to renew the law, and they will press the House for a roll call vote in the upcoming election year. Unfortunately, President Bush has rterated that he SUPPORTS the gun-ban and will sign the renewal bill -- an affront to the Constitutional right of all law abiding citizens to own semi-automatic rifles for lawful purposes.

You'd be surprised. Many NRA members are single-issue voters, which means if you don't support thr issue, you're out. If the choice is between an anti-gun Republican and an anti-gun Democrat, well, then you don't lose much by voting for a third party anyway, do you?
