I want to run this by everyone here, to see what you think.
I have noticed how conservatism vs. liberalism seems to mirror a child's relationship with his/her parents.
Conservatism definately has roots in the father archetype. The conservative philosophy seems to be interpretted to mean that the quality of your life depends on your own personal achievements, without much help at all. This may be the reason why that Conservative, Republican condidates feel spending on social programs is ruining the game. After all, why can't people fend for themselves without sapping money from our pockets?
Liberalism seems to stem from the philosophy that all people are interconnected, and that a healthy and happy society comes from everyone bng able to eat, sleep, and get medical care. This certainly (to me) seems like a maternal philosophy. Liberalism also includes tolerance for the ideas of others, and a progressive attitude towards society, "We need to change that? Let's do it!"
My general point is, the difference between liberalism and conservatism seems a lot like the difference between a maternal and paternal philosophy. Maybe it even stems from the Christian/Conservative belief in a VERY paternal seeming God. I do believe that more Christians are Republican than democratic (of course, I can't back that up with evidence at the moment).
