Calling it "a bad joke in bad taste," Suffolk Legis. Elie Mystal apologized again Wednesday for saying at a legislative hearing that he "would load up my gun and start shooting" if large groups of day laborers congregated in his nghborhood.
The Amityville Democrat said he was trying to express the frustrations of angry residents when he made the comment during a Tuesday hearing on a controversial bill that critics said would spur racial discrimination and undermine the ability of striking employees and others to protest injustices.
It was "insensitive and stupid," said Mystal, who added that he wanted to issue a more extensive apology to tamp down mounting criticism.
"I was completely out of line and again I am sorry," Mystal said Wednesday at a news conference in his office, flanked by Latino advocate Rev. Allan Ramirez, of the Brookville Reformed Church. "I absolutely and unequivocally did not mean to incite anyone to violence ... The last thing in the world that I would want to happen ... would be a hateful crime against a day laborer."
Legis. Joseph Caracappa (R-Selden), a sponsor of the bill, said Mystal's comment, while meant as a joke, "was definitely inappropriate. No doubt about it."
Mystal's remarks set off an uproar among advocates who said hostility against Latino immigrants already has created an environment that has fostered attacks in Farmingville, including the firebombing of a Mexican family's house in 2001.
Nadia Marin-Molina of the Workplace Project said the legislation was helping to stoke more anti-immigrant sentiment. "If a legislator who knows he's in the public eye can say something like that, imagine what this kind of legislation has people saying out in the streets," Marin-Molina said. "This is the kind of rhetoric it is inspiring."
Caracappa disagreed, and blamed advocates for fanning the flames. "All these pro-illegals, all they do is use the most volatile, nasty language," he said, noting that in public comments Tuesday Ramirez had said many Latinos now refer to County Executive Steve Levy as "teeny weenie Levy."
Mystal, who initially said he would vote for the bill, Wednesday said it would do nothing to solve the problem of large groups of day laborers gathering on street corners for jobs. "It's going to push it from one street to another," he said.
Caracappa said that if that happens, town government would have to step in to remove the men from town roads. The bill would prohibit people from obstructing traffic by soliciting motorists for work. County officials have reworked the bill and cast it as a traffic safety issue, and a vote can come as early as March 20.
For his part, Ramirez said that he accepted Mystal's apology. "You are forgiven," Ramirez said. "This is the season of Lent."

The truth about Rev. Al

He lives in Old Brookville/Nassau County, and has a uppity White congreration who wold run him out of town if he ever brought the Farmingville latinos to that community. He grand stands in Suffolk. The local churches in the area who's parishioners and members do all the real outreach and humitarian work to the day laborers. They use they're own funds and food pantries to provide for the undocumented during the slow work peeriods when many of them are unemployed. You don't hear much from them. i don't know how he sleeps at night knowing that he is taking credit for doing nothing other than shooting his mouth off. He needs to stay in Nassau and deal what is going on there. He's no differnet than Sharpeton. I am a latino and he doesn't speak for me.
By coming out to Suffolk this "sell out" is actually ensure that no blue collar latinos reside in that area. We should set up a day laborer site there and watch how fast he and his congregation of fake/phony liberals run the other way. I suggest a shuttle service to bring all the Farmingville day laborers to his church in order to use thr food pantries, and to use it as a shape up site. Stop trying to reap on fields you didn't sow.

After reading that posting I realized that there were several typos. This should be correct.
He lives in Old Brookville/Nassau County, and has an uppity mostly White congregation who would run him out of town if he ever brought the Farmingville Latinos to that community. He grand stands in Suffolk, but is the local churches in the area who's parishioners and members do all the real outreach and humanitarian work to the day laborers. They use they're own funds and food pantries to provide for the undocumented during the slow work periods when many of them are unemployed. You don't hear much from them.
I don't know how he sleeps at night knowing that he is taking credit for doing nothing other than shooting his mouth off. He needs to stay in Nassau and deal what is going on there. He's no different than Sharpeton. I am a Latino and he doesn't speak for me.
By coming out to Suffolk this "sell out" is actually ensuring that no blue collar Latinos reside in that area. We should set up a day laborer site there and watch how fast he and his congregation of fake/phony liberals run the other way. Just like in the other ones group did in Southampton . I suggest a shuttle service to bring all the Farmingville day laborers to his church in order to use thr food pantries, and to use it as a shape up site. Stop trying to reap on fields you didn't sow!

I love it. "Undocumented." They are ILLEGAL ALIENS. They broke one law crossing illegally. They break another working off the books. Another not paying taxes. Another not paying Social Security. Add a few more for forged licenses, SS cards, and the common buy a car, steal plates and drive it till u hit someone. If you get hit, sue the hardworking American CITIZEN for what you can.
Arrest them, deport them. Give amnesty to these 12 million skels, 24 million more will come over for the freebies. And I'm getting tired (and broke) of supporting criminals and thr kids with schooling, education and free medical, when American CITIZENS have to go to Canada and Mexico to get medications to survive.
You can't put 50 people in a 10 person life raft. We can't support the world. Get your kids off the computers, play stations and give up a sport or 2, and let them learn the value of a dollar. That will help them more than after school volleyball, or Play Station 3.
The "Rev" Al is a race-baiting sinister minister. A POS with a collar.
