MINEOLA – Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi’s bid for governor suffered another setback Monday when his longtime campaign manager and ally resigned.
Kimberly Devlin, who managed Suozzi’s first campaign for county executive in 2001, stepped down, citing personal problems, according to a source close to the campaign. Devlin had been dealing with the death and illness of close friends and relatives, the source said.
“She’s been looking to ease out,” said the source, who demanded anonymity so that official word would come from the campaign itself.
The resignation arrives at a difficult time for Suozzi’s campaign for the Democrat nomination for governor. Suozzi has failed to gain traction against Eliot Spitzer, the Democrat attorney general who commands 60 point margins in polls.
Earlier this month, one of Suozzi’s main supporters, Nassau Legislature Presiding Officer Judy Jacobs, switched her endorsement to Spitzer.
But the source said Monday’s campaign shakeup had much more to do with Devlin’s personal problems than with faltering momentum.
“The bottom line is that it isn’t that dramatic,” the source said.
