Why Did the GOP Cave on t

"What a disappointment."

That can sum up state and local republicans pretty well. Big Boy Petey Schmitt bitches about the democrats in nassau but forgets it was his party that has the power in albany and they passed a ban.
The NY GOP is dead. No issues, corrupt and plunged counties in debt during prosperous times.

NY GOP are the original cave men. If it weren't for patronage there wouldn't be any reason to vote Republican.

I don't have any problem with the ban. I don't like smoke with my meal, on my clothes or with my drink. Just go outside. Its no different than the RTL-ers or any other group wanting to get thier way in politics.

Patronage? Hell - the younger GOPs would sell thier grandmother for an appointment. Get a look at the judicary.

It's the american way with the spice of local politics - I got mine now lets screw em all.

Apparently the squeeky wheel gets more oil. The restaurant owners caved - they were the last hold-outs and they caved in to Foley. They apparently were vocal about the ban. But when they gave in so did other legislators. Does anyone know how they all voted?

It is the best thing the state of new york has done in decades. The NY GOP will forever be known as the party that saved lives. Say whatever you want, secondhand smoke kills.Three cheers to the dems in Nassau County as well.

The bill, S3292 was sponsored by Fuschillo. In the Senate, the co-sponsors included LIers Balboni, Hannon, Lavalle, and Marcellino. It passed 57-4, with all LI Senators voting yes.

In the Assembly, the co-sponsors of A7136 included Alfano, Barra, Eddington, Engelbright, Sidikman, and Wsenberg. S3292 was substituted and passed 97-44, with LI Assembly members voted yes, EXCEPT Alfano (absent), and NO votes by Barraga, Fitzpatrick, Labriola, and Levy.

Lost revenue from income and taxation will have to be made up some where.

Guess who is going to see tax hikes?

I guess we are going back to the days of prohibition.

Maybe speak easy's will make a come back?

If all the smokers in the state boycotted buying cigarettes in ny for a week, do you think albany and the city of ny would get the message in the taxes lost.(like the french lost on a boycott of thr goods)

Anyone living on Long Island can purchase ciggerettes from the Indian Reservation at great savings and most do.

Lost revenue everywhere you look.

Boycot 7/11, gas stations with daily price adjustments (those closest to the LIE & SunRise) illegal landscapers and builders, the list goes on.

Stand for something, or watch your Island FALL for every trick in the crook book.

Or Call 1-800-RentATruk and move

As far as I have been able to determine, the only two candidates in the Suffolk County Executive race this year strongly opposed to the smoking ban are Green Party candidate John Keenan and Libertarian Party candidate Chris Garvey.

I personally am in favor of the smoking ban, but if you are among those voters who regard the ban as a violation of the "rights" of smokers to destroy the lungs of others and as your top priority issue, then a vote for Keenan or Garvey would seem your most appropriate choice in the upcoming election.

Go to the school in September as kids get off the bus and walk to school and observe those that are obese.

Go to the beach, the park, the local McDonalds and Wendy's and take a look.

More and more Americans are obese, diabetic and dying from various cancers. If you care so much of what is going into your body I'd be looking at the ingredients in the food as well as the portion sizes.

At the rate the population is growing, baby boomers are hitting the Social Security collection age and as citizens with health insurance they probably have a good 10 years left in them. The natural resources are dwindling here and we are more and more dependent on forgn oil etc, something has to give right?

Let slothful Americans kill themselves with food rather than cigarette smoke it's a "kinder gentler" way to die I mean reduce the population rate???

Better yet, feed them fish every day because the bigger species are loaded with mercury. Not only will it reduce the population, but they will forget it ever happened.

FYI - Memory loss is a side effect from mercury poisoning.

RESPONSE TO ScarletLadyNY (one post up):

ScarletLadyNY, you misread my post. I specifically stated that I personally am in favor of the smoking ban. However, I did point out that those who regard themselves as having a "right" to smoke and destroy the lungs of children and others who don't might find Green Party candidate John Keenan or Libertarian Party candidate Chris Garvey (both of whom are opposed to smoking bans) an appropriate candidate for whom to vote in the Suffolk County Executive race.

That said, I am NOT supporting and do NOT recommend that voters cast thr votes for ther Keenan (despite the fact that he is the candidate of the party in which I am enrolled) or Garvey. My vote is going to be cast for Steve Levy (that is, if Levy manages to beat anti-environmental, developer-connected, carpetbagger-financed Bill Cunningham in the Democrat primary).

By the way, I agree with all that you say about McDonalds, fast food, natural resource depletion, mercury poisoning, etc.
