View Full Version : paid cheaper than volly
Gordon hghts FD soon to be gone, and then all the rest when they all see its cheaper to have a small paid dept
Gone to be absorbed by other larger volly departments not a small paid department. Get your facts straight. Oh and FYI Garden City, a small paid department, is more expensive then other all volly departments, dont do any EMS which is the majority of alarms, there response times aren't much better then all volly departments, and have staffing that most other paid departments would laugh at. Again get your facts straight.
Facts are inconvenient things to the ignoramus volunteer-bashing losers that frequent this site.

Stop your lies and look at the surrouding districts budgets Garden City is about 32% cheaper than all surrouding districts.
32% in numbers alone. The surrounding departments are larger and more populated which means a high budget due to the tax base your taking from (more people = more tax revenue per capita) and more area to cover needing more equipment and more people to get volunteers from which mewans more money needed for PPE, training, insurance, LOSAP ect.

No silly, it was E. Elmhurst FD.

I'm sorry, but that never happened in Wantagh. Maybe another District or Department, but not here.
those that couldnt pass the physical or psych for fdny don't want anyone to realize that paid obiviously makes more sense for they typical LI taxpayer......they'd rather you think that a bunch of buffs driving 90mph from thr residence to the firehouse, then to the call, is more efficient than a real crew responding

A paid dept will only need half of the trucks and houses the volly's have and do the job better and faster
ITS TIME SUFFOLK COUNTY ALL GOES PAID.

Do you actually know how much a paid department would be? Nassau or Suffolk it would closely mirror the FDNY's budget of Lets say 100 and something million or more. Leave the Vollies alone, but the vollies have to remember that thr it and if they don't show up who will and how fast.
paid is much more expensive than 97 percent of the fire departments. Look at G.C. as the third most expensieve department on the idland with the most waste, relying completely on mutual aid from everything from EMS to Workers.
Vollys from other towns supplementing fire suppression costs for GC.
Another poster here said it better than I am.
My take on Paid vs. Volly , in no order. This is for Fire service alone. EMS would add another 50% or more
1] The county { Suffolk} does not own the Trucks, engines, equipment, turn out gear, land or the buildings. So it would have to buy it from the districts, which in turn { I guess, would turn it over to the townships ]
1a] Even though they could sell off [ to Who ?] the extra Vehicles. It would not even come close to a small percentage of the total cost of the vehicles kept. The county would also have to keep at l few vehicles in reserve.
1b] The county would have to build or buy at l 3 vehicle repair garages. More Money ??? and the county would have to staff and equip them them !
Millions just for the Vehicles alone ???
2] Buildings and Land , a few but not alot of mains and subs could be shut down, and maybe sold.
I say not many because , the county would have to consider "traffic" in the responce times as far as what houses are shut down.
2b] Now you also will have building maintance costs.
Water, electric, personal. ETC.
More Millions ??????????
3] Firefighters. Do you think that they would not be close to what SCPD makes ???. Plus officers, drivers, pump operators, ETC get more. District or Battalion Chiefs [ who also get free cars]??? even more. Plus insurance and retirement.
3a] How many county wide "Heavy Rescue" Units do you have at even more cost.
MORE Millions ?????????
4] How many firefighters do we have on call full time, 24/7 ?
4a] Where do we train them ???? at what cost and where ???
Again More millions
5] Civil service tests don't come cheap. Whos brother, son, daughter, ETC gets a LEG up ?? Fire Comminisser ? and staff ?
5a] Legal department ?, Fire Police, secretarial dept. Lots of paper work to be done. County wide uniforms, badges, turn out gear ? ETC.
Now where do the millions upon millions come from ??
For the same service that is done that is done CHEAPLY and free personal ?

I agree with your points about a paid FD versus the current situation. A county wide paid fire system would cost a small fortune.
I disagree on the EMS costing 50% more. A county wide EMS system would bill insurance companies for transports (as do FDNY, Nassau PD, and all "real" systems). If managed correctly I think a "paid" county wide EMS only system might actually turn a profit.

Ok, I completely agree, a County Wide EMS system would provide the greatest benefit for saving lives and would pay for its self. Lets get on with it quickly through our politico's / government.
Also agree, a paid fire department would cost a large fortune and would provide no appreciable benefit over the current system.
Investing some more money in the fire service for fire prevention, code enforcement, and change laws requiring centrally monitored detection, and auto sprinkler system would be cost justified for saving lives.

Well put.
But I still stand by what I said. But with a NOTE. I ment 50% than what were paying for EMS. coverage as it stands now.
Not everyone will cough up an insurance card.

Lets be honest and Frank. The Volunteer fire districts around LI we are getting ready to vote? Why is it none of the eligible chiefs are trying to cut costs, cut spending? they just look to spend and build bigger and bigger fire houses on LI NY.
I have issued with the many large and over the top firehouses, they contain big profession kitchens with high end appliances I can never afford, large catering halls for members only, bars fully stocked and many plazma or lcd tv's these are fire houses not Knights of Columbus's halls?
why so many over the top items supplied by tax payers?

As I read the article about Elmont volley Fire district they had a member who got hurt doing drill races? NBC question them why they do drills and have race teams they threw NBC out - but later said it is a $1.2 Million dollar cost every year, for race equipment, trailers, supplies, mechanics, garage for storage, new speed equipment?
That sound s excessive to me to spend $1.2 million for race rig for Volunteer members to play race trucks against other fire houses across Long island NY!
Calculate the other fire districts who race and $1.2 Million was no doubt a low number a fudged - 40 or 50 X 1.2 million dam thats allot of tax money to waist!

Because the firefighters are volunteers and everyone knows volunteers need to be compensated.
Oh, wait - I just looked up the definition of "volunteer" and it means to serve without compensation.
I guess the real reason is that they feel entitled to it and have always gotten away with it. So stop asking and just keep paying your taxes.

Getting rid of the paid is not going to save you any money because your home owners insurance will take away the large discount you get for having a 24 hour fire system. It's probably about even! Do your homework before you start running your mouth. You are just jealous volley that couldn't pass the civil service test to get on the real job!

Definition of VOLUNTEER
1
: a person who voluntarily undertakes or expresses a willingness to undertake a service: as
a : one who enters into military service voluntarily
b (1) : one who renders a service or takes part in a transaction while having no legal concern or interest (2) : one who recves a conveyance or transfer of property without giving valuable consideration
The Military is all voluntary and they get compensated, remember bng a volunteer means you were not forced to join. Nothing to do with not getting compensated. You get a pension right? Well that's compensated after so many years of service. Get it right people!!!
