tragedy tonight
06-17-2006, 01:20 AM
Ex-Captain from the West Babylon Fire Department (Suffolk County, Long Island, New York) was tragically killed this evening while removing a salvage tarp from the roof of a building that had previously burned.
While removing the tarp off the roof, Ex-Captain Mike Green was electrocuted and has passed away. We will provide more details as soon as they are available.
Our deepest sympathies go out to the members of the West Babylon Fire Department but especially to the family and friends of Captain Green.
My heartfelt condolences to Ex-Captain Green's family both at home and his extended family at West Babylon FD. Our prayers are with you during these difficult times...
I saw this on News this morning - my condolences to his family and his fellow Fireman. This could happen to anyone at any time, we forget sometimes that it is a very dangerous thing to do. Lets all be safe out there.

My deepest sympathies to the members of the West Babylon Fire Department but especially to the family and friends of Captain Green.
While any death to a member of the fire service is tragic, this one is made more so by the fact that he was killed retrieving a $20.00 tarp. I would sure hate to be the Officer who ordered this action to be taken.
Is this the definition of a freak accident? Undoubtedly, but it just goes to show you that there are potential hazards on even the most routine call. Perhaps this tragedy will cause us all to pause and consider the worthiness of the risks that we all undertake and make better decisions about which are worth it, and which are not.
A man is dead and the lives of his family changed forever over a $20.00 tarp. Am I the only person who thinks this absurd? The investigators handling this situation should not just be looking into the possible electrical deficiencies involved but also the thought process that caused him to be in this situation in the first place. Who the hell goes back for a tarp anyway?
What I think is absurd is a jackass like you trivializing and placing blame on any part of an incident like this. You think whoever told him to go get the tarp isn't beating themselves up already. You realy are a j-off
Of course!!! we always retrieve -or should- averything we leave on scene. We don't leave garbage, tools or tarps. We behave like professionals, not asses like you. Would you feel better if th etarp cost 1,000?????????

WHAT???????????? R U KIDDING ME!!! FIRST GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT- THEY WENT BACK TO THE SCENE OF A FIRE, 3 DAYS LATER, TO INSPECT THE SCENE. FROM THE 3RD RUNG AT THE TOP OF THE LADDER, THE EX-CAPTAIN INADVERTENTLY TOUCHED AN UNGROUNDED LIGHT SIGN, AND WAS ELECTRICUTED IMMDIATELY. AFTER HIS BODY WENT UNCONSCIOUS, AND HE WAS HANGING UPSIDE DOWN, PROBABLY FROM A LEG LOCK ON THE LADDER AS HE WAS MOST PROBABLY A WELL TRAINED VERTERAN OF THE VOLUNTEER FIRE SERVICE, A WAITRESS SAW HIM HANGING WITH HIS HEAD BY THE FRONT DOOR, AS SHE HEARD A LOUD NOICE, PROBABLY FROM THE EX-CAPTAIN'S FALL! (read today's newsday)-
Yes there was a tarp on the roof, covering a whole that was made by the firefighters to vent the fire three days earlier. Yes, routinely, we volunteers retrieve all our property, after going to work. (even our ambulance backboards are sometimes retrived from hospitals days after we transport a patient and leave it there) Most of all, we do our best, to protect our individual districts LIFE & PROPERTY as best we know how. Sometimes, we even give our own lives in the process. ALL GIVE SOME, BUT, UNFORTUNATELY, SOME GIVE ALL! Our prayers go out to the family friends and members of the W. Babylon Fire Department at this most horrific time of loss! TUESDAY NITE, 19:30 HOURS, THE ENTIRE FIREMATIC WORLD WILL BE THINKING ABOUT EX-CAPTAIN MIKE J. GREEN- RIP OUR BROTHER!

I hope you're not a member of the fire service. What an embarassment. Your stupidity has rendered me speechless.

Oh Boo Hoo Already...you people in WB have nothing better to do.
Let's all move on already, the man is dead!! Let his family grieve, and then move on!! Volunteer firemen are retarted for doing that type of work for free anyway

Hey big mouth post your name and then make the same statement. I am a memeber of WB. I invite you to come on down to discuss your statement as well as the idiot before yours. You won't though because you are the same coward who hides behind your PC and can't handle what we do. Again an open invitation is there for you to take. Come see me. And thanks to the person who made the call to tell me what was here. You will never be as brave or courageous or half the man our member was. If you are going to hide here then don't respond.....
LT
Whoever you are that is bashing West Babylon, better get in line for an a**whooping. How dare you make small of the fact that one of our own has answered his last call. A death is a death. Give some compassion to his family and his fire family. If nothing else, his death has pulled all 3 houses together during this time. I am very pleased to be a member of WBFD and to see all pulling together. It is a very hard time for all. Whether you are paid or volunteer a death of a comrade hurts all the same. My heart and that of my family goes out to Mike's family and to my fire family. I will miss him. Thank you to the Rescue crew who did a fantastic job responding, working him up and getting him to the ER as quick as they could. Alas there was nothing more any of us could do. Mike, RIP
I am part of a service so I do know what I am talking about

You people are questioning the cost of a tarp or who sent him up the ladder......we are trained to save lives not point fingers. Things like this happen all over all the time. Don't lose focus, this is someones husband, father, son who no matter how he lost his life has changed the life of others forever...how sad. Lets learn from this not blame anyone one person. In a few short weeks this will all be in the past and we will carry on as usual. Life is too short people, we all do what we are trained to do to make up a good Fire/EMS service and yes accidents do happen to us too. Not only do we save lives but we put our own on the line and thats the price we pay for choosing to do this. It could have been anyone of us. We see it happening more and more and the best thing we can do is stay alert and remember those that we have lost. We may be from different depts and yes we all have people we can't stand and we may battle it out during softball games, drills, parades or even on this web page but isn't it time we respect eachother and the loss of a member no matter what dept they are from......
Rest in Peace

along with about 1500-2000 fellow volunteer brothers from long island and elsewhere, I had the unfortunate pleasure of seng EX-CAPTAIN MIKE GREENE tonight. More important, I had the unfortunate pleasure of seng first hand what a true brotherhood is all about. Listening to the member of CO#4 speak about Mike, i could not help, as I'm sure others couldn't as well, hold back the tears, and the chills in my body. his words touched the hearts of all, and he should be commended. The professionalism by the whole wbfd in handling what must be a horrific time for them, is to be acknowledged. and last, but certainly most important, our prayers are with his wife and 4 kids. I am sure teh wbfd will take care of you guys- RIP MIKE GREEN

Couldn't wait a few days to say something rancid? You are a disgrace not only to your dept, but the fire service as well.
Your mother should have swallowed you that night.

to the j-offs (as Mike Greene would say) who have been questioning the course of action that caused Mike's death or have chosen to make such disturbing comments about people mourning him, just ask yourself how you would feel if that was your best friend, spouse, child or parent who was killed?
I would never wish this pain upon anyone including you big-mouths who choose to mock his friends' sadness. Mike was an amazing person who brought nothing but good to WBFD and the people who knew him best. He loved bng a part of Co.4, bng a father to his kids and making people happy, let's just leave it at that. Mike Greene was one of a kind, a gentleman, and you people writing negative comments, you will never be even half the man he was.

Mike's Bud. Well said. As for the dou<hebag who posted this: Common courtesy usually prevails to wait some time before spewing crap like you and the other a$$hole.
Her personal life should have NOTHING to do with the fact she was his 1st Lt., and a friend. Her personal life should have NOTHING to do with her mourning, or anyone in the WBFD, for that matter. If her situation is another story, as you put it; then save it for another post.
Don't desecrate MG, his accident, his wake/funeral or his memory by posting this crap. Posting this crap is abshing MG, whether you believe it or not.
Look at it this way: Leave politics and personal feelings out of this post.. Dou<hebag

Are you an English teacher? Fire away. And FYI, practice what you preach.
For example:" Many a beer with Mike you just need to learn the english language"
1) Between Mike and you should have a comma/semi colon between them. I'll admit I am not sure of which one, but some sort of punctuation should be there.
2) When using the word English, the letter "E" should be capitalized.
BTW, I'm not a volunteer fireman.
As for letting anyone join, as you so eloquently put it, you're living proof of that. Glass houses come to mind.
But then again, there is not much glass in a trailer.

Man, is this the best you can do? You are without a doubt, one of the shining stars of the WBFD. But for fun and games, I will pacify you.
I met MG (RIP) through mutual friends who are in the WBFD. And through them I heard about this wonderful, informantive site. But real tacky people like you could not wait to post something cynical, cruel, and asinine attacking anyone. Thanks to people like you, the volunteer fire system is a joke.
The handful of dedicated people can't continue to carry the do nothings like yourself, who come on this "informative" site spewing trash. Hold on to your silverware set for the annual dinner, cuz that's about all you are good for.
Stay in your trailer park, and if you can't come back with any information worth a crap, don't bother replying. You will just show your ignorance to everyone else here.
P.S. I'm not in the vollies, vamps, etc. I grew up around it and saw what a$$holes like you did to it, so I strayed out. With no regrets.

Will all of you please stop this. You are disgracing the memory of a good man as well as yourselves. Let it go. Mike will be missed by all of us no matter what we are. Friend, vollie, co-worker, nghbor whatever. Just stop this nonsense and remember the man and honor him in your own way. Think about it. Would you really want him to see this.
