To Any and all,

I just stumbled across this site while searching for local politics. It seems like a good place to talk.

I am an ex-republican who is disappointed in the Long Island, Suffolk County, and New York Republicans. I don't think I could ever be a Democrat, but I don't feel that the Republicans represent me, ther. In fact, on the island, I just seem to see Republicrats. Republicans don't seem to be, well, Republican enough for me.

Am I the only one, and if not, is there anything that can be done to save the Republican Party on Long Island?

You can join the Conservative Party, but they probably aren't "Republican" enough ther. New York politics is decidedly more liberal than than the politics of the American heartland.

Try asking a Long Island GOP leader to explain the difference between thr party and the Democrats. For many LI-GOPers, ideology is an alien concept.

Hi Bill (the no-spin zone?)

I think that LI and NY Republican Politicians THINK that they have to be more liberal to win. But look here: When they put Lazio against Clinton, he failed to energize the more conservative voters with his "I can do that too" platform. He lost. Then the Suffolk GOP put up Joan Johnson for his seat, and she was a black, pro-abortion, anti-gun liberal. She lost. Carolyn McCarthy has been unable to be beat, and she isn't all that good. Recently, Grucci loses to a Dem because, again, he doesn't vote like a Republican should.

The party needs to recognize this, and act more republican. This will energize the Repubs and the Independents and they could start winning again. No?

Grucci lost because he ran a miserable campaign.

His voting record was fine

Except for the fact that he voted anti-environment and "mistakenly" voted for the farm bill allocating lesser amount of funds.

And voting anti-women, etc.

Great voting record Felix!

When was this vote on outlawing women? I missed that one.

I'm glad it failed. Things would be really dull and a lot less fun without them.

You are correct, the NY Republicans don't stand for Republican values any longer - especially the Nassau ones. Only one GOP Congressman from all of downstate, and you know what....he ain't no shining GOP light house ther.

Best bet, abandon them. Let them collapse into a heap of thr own manure. Let them rot there a couple of years. Then take a decade and rebuild.

I've got time.

Sam, that's a very short term view. It may make people feel nice to 'teach the Republicans a lesson', though I'm not sure for what (Gulotta refused to raise taxes?).

Just keep electing Democrats, especially judges. Sometime, maybe ten years from now, the public will be screaming "HOW COULD THAT JUDGE HAVE DONE THAT?!", but they will have forgotten they elected that judge to a 14 year term to 'teach a lesson'.

I think people will discover the mistakes they made in voting for democrats regret it and come back the republican party. Suozzi is the perfect example of this.

You are right as always Mr. GOPher.

Keep joe Mondello right where he is, 50% of all local offices and declining.

Scandals roll on and on, vote goes down and down. Offices fall and fal. Mondello keeps blaming someone else.

All is right with the world.

Grucci was a dismal failure as a Congressman. His voting record, as far as I am concerned, was awful. He voted for the 245 (i) which would give thousands of illegal aliens amnesty for the sum of $1,000. All the Congressmen from N. Y. voted for it and three abstained. It passed by one vote. Grucci stabbed us in the back. If he voted NO, the bill would not have passed the House. Grucci promised the folks here in Farmingville that he would help us if we would support him in his run for Congress. We should have known better as he was a dismal failure as the Town Supervisor also. Fool us once but you will not fool us twice. Grucci lost. Bishop did not win.
