my question is who do these people answer to? Why do they respond with 3 SUV's? If they are responding to fire department calls, then why do we need a bus in the fire departments?????

Why don't you get off of your fat lazy ass and help your community out by becoming a member instead of staying at home listening to your scanner thinking of things to bitch about. You'll then be able to see why fire departments and districts operate the way they do.

The scanner man has a point , if you live in the districts that have a FD ambulance why do you need to pay taxes for duplication of services with exchange ambulance ??????? Its a honest question not meant to be a hit on volunteers.

They report to the towns who have contracted them. But there appears to be little oversight from the towns.

They report to the Town of Islip for tax levy, and then all the same County and State EMS authorities as everybody else. They do tend to over react or jump calls sometimes, but for the area that they cover, on the 911 rotation, there seems to be plenty to go around. If you took their buses out of the mix there would be a shortfall. South Islip Town FD's., for the most part are one ambulance resources or EMS first repsonders with simultaneous calls.
They can be annoying at times, but really helpful other times. It can bee seamless and smooth one time, (one Chief, one fully staffed ALS ambulance), and other times, they just keep coming and coming like they emptied the barn. Not a duplication though.

I have said it before.
The exchange does a great job doing pick ups [You know Granny farted] or just a "take me to the Doctors. They even have a good ALS crew.
BUT that said the public does not need a buch of FireFighter want to bees trying to drag them out of a MVA with out the training and tools. Especially when a trained equiped Fire dept is Close by.
There just looking to get more Heavy Rescue Equipment that they can't use.

well one thing that you said is not really true. You said exchange has heavy rescue equipment! False. If you know where it is then come down to our building and show us because we have never seen it. Heavy rescue is for the FIRE DEPT not us. Yes there are EMS depts on long island that have HR equipment on their ambulances. We do not because we rely on the fire depts in our area to take care of that, and they all do a great job at it. We do EMS and thats it, MCI and rehab at fires we do also. It is our responability to see that you firemen are ok at a fire, give you someplace to rest and recoupe and to get back in the shit as quick as possable. We do not want to see any of you to get hurt. But if you do we are there to help. Keep up the good work fellas

IslipEMS GUY.
I agree and say thanks to you and all the others in your corps.
But you have to understand that it is common knowledge among the FD. members that the Exchange put in for a heavy resuce vehicle. I think the real problem is with county. They rotate between the FD and you, with out looking into the type of call.
Lets face it "cross training" especially with current protocals is Hard at best. I will be honest with you
It is nice to be able to call on you dedicated people at any-time.
But you have to also be honest and say you take great comfort in
seeing those Big RED Trucks and Engines Comming down the road ready and waitting to Jump into the jaws of hell .
While there is a lot of compition between the Fire Service and EMS. There is one thing that makes us Brothers.
We do what the rest do not have the GUTS to do, for FREE.
No other Service in the State of New York can say the same.

I have to say this is a little harsh. The exchange ambulance personnel train very long for rescue. The Fire departments train hard on how to fight fires & then think about if they have to run the ambulance. So stop knocking the ambulance personnel, most firemen don't want to run an ambulance they want to put out fires. Most ambualnce personnel want nothing to do with fires just saving lives. So why not just work together and quit the pissing contests.

I have been a member of Exchange for over 10 years. I am an ex Chief and i have seen alot of things around the company. I have never even heard of exchange wanting or asking the county about a Heavy Rescue truck. Why in gods name would we do that?? We are an ambulance company. Not a Fire Dept. We handle medical calls not fires, heavy rescue, haz-mat, water rescue, technical rescue. We are there to assist the FD in any way they need. Yes, we have people in our dept that are trained in the above but we dont have any equipment and we dont want any. Last year we responded 2400 times for service. Thats 2400 times!! We dont have time to do anything else. Yes, we have trouble getting out sometimes and that is being worked on. but what happends if we do not have Exchange ambulance in our area (I say WE because i live here to) the FD's have to take all of those calls too. I do not think that the East Islip FD would like to get a job at 3 in the morning for a meet the boat at Timber Point for four morons that got in a bar fight in Ocean Beach. Or the two "MEN" that got stuck together from the pines. (Yes its true) All of the FD's in our area do a great job, East Islip with the fires and MVA's, Islipo Terrace with the fires and MVA's. Islip with going to everyone elses fires and MVA's and Great River. No comment!! Rock on guys!!!
