Addresses of some of Huntington’s Affordable Housing Activists
Some of our most vocal advocates of affordable housing are people who seem to live the farthest away from areas they want to see developed or downzoned for higher density housing. They proclaim that to be against them on this issue you are then somehow a racist, against young people, against old people, against diversity, against working poor etc.
Never do they mention where they live and how often secluded, exclusionary and ruralistic it is. They never have even offered to try and change the zoning where they live to accept higher densification of people into their neighborhoods. You will be called a NIMBY and much worse by people who live opposite of the way they want you to live.
Many of these so called do gooders are associated with Churches, newspapers,
affordable housing and low income housing organizations, developers, politicians,
Pro immigration groups, real estate brokers, etc. It isn’t lost on many of my neighbors and others in the community where I live of the blatant hypocrisy of it all.
Here are just a couple:
Housing Help- Robert Ralph, Little Neck Road, Northern Centerport, 1 acre of land.
His neighbors also have acres. His property abuts a town park and beach. His large house is on the water and also has a beach and water rights. Nearest neighbor Vanderbilt Museum, Town Park.
Church Group-and very active affordable housing activist in town- Charles Kerner,
Sweet Hollow Road, West Hills, 3 1/2 acres of land.
His neighbors also have acres of land. His property is close to a County Park with over 100 acres of woods. Very rural setting.
Affordable Housing Activist, member of housing advocacy groups- Harriet Varady,
Indian Well Court, Northern Elwood, 1+acres of land. Neighbors also live on over acre plots. Property abuts little known County Park with aprox. 80 acres of wooded land.
One time President of The Huntington Housing Coalition-“ A coalition of affordable housing activists ,church groups, politicians, developers, etc”- Elizabeth Hubbard,
Mallard Cove, Lloyd’s Neck, lives on over 2 acres of land abutting Long Island Sound looking West. Have beach and water rights. Her neighbors also live on many acres of land. Lives also near State Park with almost 1,000 acres of land. Inclusive neighborhood for deers, foxes, raccoons, chipmonks, birds etc. Zoning laws strictly enforced.
My neighborhood was downzoned by Huntington officials to allow more people in our houses which sit on average of only .18 of an acre of land with not much more than 1,000sq ft of living space. Our Accessory Apartment Law enacted by Real Estate Broker and developer former town councilman Quentin Sammis, Huntington Bay Road, Huntington Bay, on aprox. 1 ½ acres of land. Zoning laws strictly enforced. No accessory apartments for his neighborhood.
NOW THATS HYPOCRISY
