View Full Version : Young Republicans. . . on the move!

Former Proud YR

Like their website, www.nassauyrs.com, says, the Nassau County Young Republicans are surely "on the move!"

Last Monday, I had the pleasure of attending their beautiful Inaguration and January meeting. Peter Schmitt installed the officers, and Town of Hempstead Receiver of Taxes Don Clavin, Hempstead Mayor James Garner and Hempstead Leader Ray Rhoden addressed the crowed of over fifty people - standing room only for some!

The Young Republicans have a large agenda for this coming year and have grown so much in these eleven months since Nina Petraro has become president.

As a former YR, it makes me proud to see the club is finally becoming what it used to again!
I encourage all Republicans to support their valiant efforts!

Question

The YRs are expanding their base and are doing right for the party by meeting in Hempstead. It will definitely prove successful in the long run, especially with President Bush's popularity increasing in minority constituencies.

A move by a local Karl Rove?

Maybe you can get the Republican party in this state to be more like the n'l Republican party. Pro-life, lower taxes, less big brother, less gay rights above anyone else's, and all the rest.

As a YR, I can tell you that we definitely are. We can deliver the message of conservatives to a whole new generation and do not like the oppressive legislation being passed like smoking bans, higher taxes and the SONDA bill.

The way I see it... a young person today has to make a conscience thoughtdul decision to register as a Republican. It is not the "in" thing to do..... lets face it, Hollywood makes it seem EVIL to be a Republican.... and Hollywood has alot of influence on today's young people. Nassau YR's are to be applauded and assisted by the senior republican committees as much as possible!
Thank God for the intellingent, convicted, resolved, young republicans of tomorrow.... It is refreshing!

You young people are nutzoid if you think the GOP is gaining any ground whatsoever in the minority community.

Trent Lott and Strom Thurmond are just the tip of the iceberg. Locally you got John Ciotti, Tom Alfano and Bob Barra.

The YRs are trying to make inroads in minority communities. Their recent decision to have their regular monthly meetings in the Village of Hempstead shows this. The Republican Party has a long way to go, but by following the lead of President Bush, Governor Pataki and locals Mayor Garner and Ray Rhoden, the Nassau County Young Republicans can recruit and grow in ALL ethnic communities!

first of all, what are these comments about John Ciotti, Tom Alfano and Bob Barra that former "GOP YR" makes? say what you mean, if you know what you mean that is!

also, the republicans have nothing to be embarrassed about as far as minority citizens are concerned - their platform is one of equal opportunity for all! it's the reason people of all shades are moving over to the GOP side!

it's the democrats who take minority citizens for granted and do nothing to help them they are all talk, no action!

I head from my friend in the yrs who wanted to meet in a different area that there was a vote on the Hempstead thing. he said vp chris bastardi led the charge FOR Hempstead and that the executive board basically followed suit with only the one dissent. it is obvious that bastardi wanted hempstead and actually believes the GOP has a chance with minorities, but did the other board members really think this too, or does he just have that much power that they follow him?

Young Republicans just might be reaching out to minorities with success. I was listening to Steve Malzberg a few weeks ago and a number of conservative blacks phoned in and didn't seem to like the Democrats. I sure wish I could remember all the comments they made, but it made me realize more and more blacks are realizing the Democrat Party is not for them.

I was just reading that pro-lifer Bob Dornan, who used to be a congressman, said Nancy Pelosi showed her prejudice by telling him - what if your daughter were raped by a black man, then wouldn't you want her to have an abortion? Pretty sick, don't u think?

My Take

does bastardi have that much power?

well, i'd say he gets credit for his motivation, intellect and dedication to the GOP, but the perks of dating the president must be plenty (at least enough to get passed what he wants passed)

Be Happy

everyone on this board makes everything sound so sinister!

are chris bastardi and nina petraro dating? yes.
however, they were been dating prior to even being a part of the yrs.

he doesn't get things passed because of their relationship. they get things passed because they have used their relationship for good to help the republicans.

the yr board is made up of mainly people from east rockaway (nina's area) and valley stream (chris's area). by running on a ticket with members from these two communities, the yrs have gained a lot of momentum and have been able to make progress without the obstacles of geogrphic competition. the yrs have even made up a west end and east end club recently (see their site) to bridge the gap into those communities not represented on the executive board.

and for your information, as a yr, the relationship is such a non-issue. many do not even know they are going out because they are such professionals in teh organization. they rarely even drive to the meetings together. they present a great team and have forged the way for the republican party to have a future in nassau county.

does bastardi's position in the yrs help him as far as maybe taking over after nina leaves-obviously yes, but he would win that election anyway with all he does.

to sum up: pre-petraro and bastardi - yrs a failing mess. no members, no money, no recognition

because of petraro and bastardi - yrs a success story and the apple of the GOP's eye once again. visits from the governor's daughter, fundraisers, parties, website...you name it, they've accomplished.

just let me know when i can vote for them for elected office-BOTH OF THEM!

You might want to ask Bob Barra about his role in designing a campaign flyer for N. Hempstead candidates in 1991 that featured a photo of a dilapidated Harlem brownstone with a bunch of black folks sitting on the stoop under the tag line "KEEP THIS OUT OF OUR COMMUNITY - VOTE REPUBLICAN"

Or, the annonymous flyers circulated in White Italian neighborhoods in the first two Ciotti campaigns warning against "CROSS BORDER CRIME WAVES" if the Democrats gain a political foothold.

Or, Tom Alfano's advocacy of legislation permitting racial profiling by Nassau Cops whom he thinks should have the authority to stop, question, and frisk without any suspicion that the black individual was associated with a crime.

And the YR's think the GOP has the potential to make significant inroads into the minority community. Your absolutely nuts.

As for those few alleged Black Conservatives calling into right-wing radio, they are so far out of the main stream of the black movement as to be laughable.

Go ahead, keep meeting in Hempstead, but your at cross-purposes with the leadership of your organization from the top down to the bottom - Washington to Westbury!

you seem like a dem trying to pretend he is a republican. the fact is democrats use race in campaigns - the NAACP (now just a wing of the Democrat party) ad in Texas regarding the Byrd killing is just the most recent and glaring example.

Clinton "remembering" church burnings that never happened in arkansas. Democrats calling republicans racists constantly is jsut another example of their lack of ideas and you fit right in, so be truthful, if thats possible!

Blacks are more socially conservative than not and the movement is towards republicans.

racists like you will lose!

In fact, I'm a D'Amato Republican, voted for Ford, Reagan on and on and attended 2 National Conventions with the Nassau delegation in the 80's.

Fact is, I'm correct. Got my facts right about this.

Go ahead, ask Barra bout his role in race baiting.

Ask Ciotti. Ask Alfano.

Go ahead young and uninformed one.

you sound like a former goper, not just a former gopyr - adding to the false stories about republican race insensitivity and not responding at all about democrats race baiting.

Why are you so negative and obsessed with race??

Blacks and other minorities are realizing, more and more, that their values are those of the Republican Party. I won't stand by and let you, whether democrat shill or former republian shill, talk as if the Republican Party is or ever has been racist! It is democrat senator byrd who was a former member of the kkk, it is the democrats who play race against race, not republicans!

as for the issue at hand, instead of calling the present YR's nutzoid, try seeing and understanding all their hard work, for republicans of any race - it isn't them that are obsessed with race, it is you! maybe you used race in your republican days or maybe you are just a democrat (more likely!) trying to use race like democrats always do! in fact, if you are or were truly as involved as you say you were, put up or shut up, tell us who you are! or else go back and crawl under your rock, the rock where haters like you live, or pretend to live.
