View Full Version : Ward System
Can anyone tell me what type of background or experience one would need to have a successful chance of being elected to one of these seats? and/or the process to get started? I have decided to get involved on local government, and found that most of our current officials have a law degree and are younger than they used to be.

They are high-caffeine lawyers that work within the system and are good at figuring out how it works. Younger people tend to be more career-oriented, using an office as a stepping stone, while older pols may have other reasons -- their careers are already established and they are concerned about the direction their district is going in.
I think the ward system could bring us more "(wo)man of the people" style candidates, who may be less savvy but more well-liked. Politics may be less about power suits and backroom connections and more about electing people like Little League coaches, bake-sale moms and the local pastor.
(That's a good thing -- for all you cynical folks who post on this site!)

I think the candidates will be more every day people who have a commitment to their coomunity and their districts. People who are involved in their communtities and know what the residents want.
I dont think anyone should take an office as a stepping stone..or do it to takethe next step..The new breed of candidates should do it for the right reason..to do something for their community and to represent the people in their districts and to actually care about what goes on in their district and in the Town as a whole.
If you oppose the overtly ambitious politician, I guess you are not a Suozzi supporter.

Thanks for the info... sounds like you could be my first vote. I have been waiting for replies from the powers that be in relation to district lines and if the November election will allow people like me to run, have not heard anything back as of yet. I would meet with my councilman but not sure how much help he would be to help someone possibly replace him

TOB, are you Republican, Democratic or independent? The two major parties have much different styles in BH.

I am Republican (as much as one can be), most likely because most of the politicians am influenced by through my office are republican. I have liked the way situations have been handled on my projects buy the R representatives. However I am young and I tend to go with my gut on everything...may not always seem republican.

A lot will depend if an established councilman lives in your ward (coucilman district is the fancy term!). Generally, GOP politics in BH is about power. If you have some, you will be the candidate. If not, get a bunch of signatures and run a primary.

I have been talking to a lot of people about my interest, and just recently learned that I could get a petition signed by 500 members of the chosen party and then winning a run off in September... must be what you wrote about running a primary.
I noticed your user name "Retired Colonel"... a while back a retired Colober ran for office? I am definately green when it comes to goign thru this petition process, it would be great to find someone that knew what, where, when and the how.
I did not state anything about myself in these posts, key points (not sure if they are a benefit or not); I am 26, always lived in Brookhaven, I am very successful Traffic Engineer for a private Consultant firm, I am a private pilot, I coach a local H.S. Ice-hockey team, however I am not a powerful, experieced old political figure...still interested in the concept of me up and running?
Many have asked me "Why"? Through work I can improve the roadway network, I can make it safer, If I get politically involved I can use my knowledge of the town processes to work for and against land-use issues, tax collecting & spending, etc... within the town. My main concern would be transporation planning and land use issues.
