View Full Version : The Rape of North Hempstead
A Slap in the Face
01-31-2006, 04:23 PM
Chairman Mondello, it is time for your resignation. You have kowtowed to the West End leaders who supported the Town of Hempstead candidate, Thomas McKevitt, and have taken any hope of North Hempstead has of creating a viable Supervior candidate. Oh and of course East Meadow is a WONDERFUL place to bring a candidate out of. You drive down Hempstead turnpike and it looks like Main Street Flushing. Not to mention the fact that the area is cut up into at least three different assembly districts.
For too long, we have sat by while you destroyed what many throughout the nation considered the Preeminent Political Machine of Suburbia. You're fear of a coup led to Tom Gulotta's gimmick budgets, the lack of money spent on North Hempstead campaigns leading to the loss of all but one council seat, and finally the loss of 4 of the 5 major county wide elected officials. Finally, you have sucked the air out any hope North Hempstead had to trying to recapture at least one other elected official position.
When is enough enough for the Town of Hempstead Republican Committee?
5 council seats, The Supervisor, The Receiver of Taxes, The Town Clerk, The 14th, 19th, and the 21st Assembly Districts, The 6th, 8th, and 9th Senate Districts, along with the 3rd, 5th, 8th, 13th, and 15th Legisilative Districts aren't enough??
19 Elected Officials aren't Enough!?!?!
I am ashamed at the fact that you are the Chairman of this County Committee. You rule through fear and have no respect for anyone. I assure you this, I will drink champagne the day you are tossed out or run in fear of a coup.
One thing is for sure, we need a leader from Outside the town of Hempstead. We need a leader that is willing to stand up to threats. We need a leader like Joe Margiotta. A man so dedicated to our County Organization that he was willing to go to jail for it. You are a shame and a laughingstock. It's time for a change.
Dear Douchebag,
Get a life.
Best Wishes,
Supporter of Joe M.

Republican greed helped to kill suburbia in nassau County and now the democrats have perfected that to help the people who most likely will vote for them RENTERS, IMMIGRANTS, ILLEGAL ALIENS (MANY HAVE PHONY ID'S), old hippies, old yuppies, developers, brokers, mortgage lenders, any business who wants over population.
face it unless you live in Muttontown your screwed :x

Win some races up in North Hemp and we would be glad to help.
You have lost all major races with a lack of leadership.
You bring in lousy numbers in County wide races. Maureen only won because of Hempstead.
Your candidate who interviewed blew it.
Win and you shall revceive.
Wrong leader, I'm a disillusioned NHPer. We all know who should've gotten the nomination.

Then he should have stepped up, rather than sat back.
Really, how do you reward North Hempstead when they don't do a thing, have no organization and continue to get blown out of the water.
They dont even get literature out up there.
In addition, the real saving grace of the district is Garden City.
If anythin, they should be pissed off. That was Balboni's/Garden City seat to start with.

wow Jay....you need to look in the mirror...like your post though
Isnt it the case that several TONH areas have barely any institutions at all? Manhasset for instance... heavily Republican. and yet, the numbers dont reflect that. What gives?

The "deal" is that North Hempstead is a Democrat Town. It is the the Democrats what Hempstead is (for now) to the Republicans.
Calling the McKevitt selection a "rape" of North Hempstead is hyperbole, but it certainly is true that the Hempstead GOP leaders are selfish and that the picking of a North Hempstead person would have certainly helped up here. The litany above of Hempstead elected officials is telling. How short sighted it is to add one more to an already impressive array.
The selection of a North Hempstead person for that positon would have done exponentially more good for us here than it will for the Hempstead GOP. But, the pigs in Hempstead have succedded once again in adding 2 or 3 more patronage positons to their trough while all the other farm animals go hungry.
If one is going to go by the premise that North Hempstead Republicans somehow do not "deserve" to have anything or any position allocated to them, because they are not successful, well, then, I say that too is certainly short sighted. It also is a prescription for never having a chance to improve here or to elect more Republicans, or even to compete and force the Democrats to keep themselves honest.
I do not know McDevitt (?) and he may be the best thing since sliced bread, but all I can say, from a NH perspective is that it sends the message LOUD AND CLEAR to all North Hempstead committeemen and club members (yes, there still are some) that NH is not a factor in any decision made on Post Avenue and that long and distinguished service to the party (aka Rich Nicolello) and the pleas of an earnest Town Leader (aka Peter Cavallaro) are meaningless and are for naught if you hale from north of Old Country Road.
A few in Hempstead (one of whom only has maybe 2 EDs in the 17th) continue to feather their beds at the expense of the rest of us. This time it was North Hempstead. Next time it will be someone or somewhere else.
McKevitt Wins

And he wins NH too. So thar!

There never was any question as to whether or not McKevitt would win (or any of the other republican candidates for that matter), but what was the right thing to do for the party as a whole.
He SHOULD even win North Hempstead even the first time out since most of the good NH Republican areas on the southern tier are in the 17th.
The NH GOP is cooked. Try some new leadership and get a few wins under your belt before crying foul. The same tired old faces will lose time and time again.
You're the Dems' punching bags and everyone knows it.
Where's the farm team? Where's the drive?
There is a valid point with some of these statements by people about North Hempstead's Organization. North of I.U. Willets Road, the party is a disgrace. We have hanger-ons and sunshine patriots, all who show up a week before election day and like to do nothing but stand around and BS.
The Southern Tier continues to be the only last strong hold. The fact is Manhasset, Plandome, Munsey Park, etc. have all become "too rich" It used to be a well to do lawyer was interested in his taxes and always wanted to be able to get his kid a job. They would support the party and in many instances become committeepersons. However with the increase in the NYSE fortunes, people don't care about the taxes up there because they don't get hit as hard. Port Washington's demographics have changed dramatically starting in 1985 going from Italian to a heterogenous mix of several ethnic groups and many of them from outside Nassau County.
Great Neck might as well become its own City, like Long Beach or Glen Cove. The fact is where we used to lose the 33 ED's in Great Neck by only 3 to 1, we are now losing it 8 to 1. The only way North Hempstead's Organization can rebound is if we do exactly what Ben Zwirn did against John Kiernan. That is find an issue to run on and harp on it for two years, allowing other issues to arise and pounce on them as they present themselves. Between Zwirn, The Democratic County Committee, and Resident for a More Beautiful Port Washington, some estimate that the three groups combines spents between Half to Three Quarters of a Million Dollars for the 1989 campaign.
The only way to jump start the organization in North Hempstead is to pool resources from the County Committee and the other two Towns, using the knowledge that Hempstead and Oyster Bay has in Organization and use the leaders who actually know North Hempstead's issues, like Rich Nicolello, to develop and important and issue oriented campaign, while still be willing to fight dirty the same way Zwirn, Middleamrk, and Biamonte did. But I must concur with some of my fellow posters, this is the wrong message to send to North Hempstead while ylling at us for not developing an organization. The simple truth is, we need a face to represent the new organization and a North Hempstead candidate could've been that face.
So, one of the few female Republican elected officials in Nassau vacates her office. The Nassau GOP, facing demographic shifts and declining enrollment, searches far and wide for a candidate to run for her seat. And . . . . they come up with a white male from the Hempstead Town Attorney's office. You gotta love these guys.

Yes, and the dem's choose a Indian who works for teh County executive in a dstrict consisting of mostly irish and italians, gotta love Jay
The GOP candidate is going to win the special election with 70% of the vote no matter who the Dems pick. The Asian popluation is growing every day, especially in the southern part of North Hempstead. The Dems are reaching out to that population. The Dems seem to be playing for the long term. The GOP seems to be mostly intersted in protecting what they have in Hempstead over the short term.

The NH GOP has a face - it's Mikey Balboni. Newsday likes him. The only problem is that Mikey doesn't want anything to do with the NH Gop unless its handing out money.
Angelo Ferrara is fed up with the party, Jimmy O'Connor left, and Maureen O'Connell was never available to the party when she was here.
Face facts. The NH GOP will be at least a decade rebuilding unless some miracle happens.

If it annoys you, then primary him. Get Nicolello to declare, run a primary and beat McMuffin out of his shoes, which he is capable of doing. You guys are so afraid of Mondello and his crew that of course they are going to stick it to you. Where are the consequences? All that you have guaranteed with this is the loss of yet another solid Republican seat.

Right now, with all of this stuff going down with the legislature, the hospital, and Tom Suozzi's insipid leadership, Cousin Bruce Bent ain't lookin half bad.
The North Hempstead GOP is toast.
The North Hempstead GOP is toast.
Oh really!!!!!!
The reality is that the NH GOP has been toast for years. It had nothing to do with this recent fracas.
There is no effort afoot to counter the Great Neck democrat influence and unless that is achieved then we'll remain toast. Plain and simple.
NH is totally and completely unwinnable by the GOP without the Great Neck vote.

The NHGOP will never get the Great Neck vote.
To be competiitve, the GOP needs to generate greater interest, activity and pluralities from its strengths: Manhasset, Mineola, Carle Place, Westbury, New Hyde Park and the Willistons to compete. It should also be able to do better in Port Washington than it does at present. Not only from Republicans but from blanks and Is too. The Republican enrollment is just not enough in NH to win any more by itself.
Anyone who thinks that Great Neck, Roslyn, New Cassel will ever vote Republican is deluding themselves.

Most of the southern tier went for Suozzi in a big way in November 2005. Kathy Rice did very well, too. You call that strength?
The Enrollment on TONH is not THAT Bad... its just that a well oiled institution with perks, incentives and motivation does not exist. It can be done, folks, Balboni and O'Connell can do well in NH... it just takes some creativity

It takes hard work. Something the GOP has forgotten how to do. All talk, no action.

Cavallaro is Galante's piss bucket, but consider whar he has to work with:
A State Senator who could care less about the party and who is more interested in looking like a "statesman" by cozying up to the Democrats.
A County Clerk who, as an Assemblywoman, paid so little attention to the NH part of her distict (her home) that she was barely ever seen there.
A Town Councilman who should just as well change his enrollment to Democtrat since he likes to kiss their assess so much.
A County Chairman who foolishly removed yet another elected office from the NH committee.
And, let's not even start to talk about the local "leaders' that he has to deal with in many parts of the town.
No, depite what the Dummycrats on this site want to say, it isn't about "hard work". The Republicans in NH, for all their faults, still have a better organized party apparatus than the Democrats do. The Democrats have the advantage in terms of party registration, incumbency and a patronage machine/mill that they play to the hilt.
The Democrats can fool themselves all they want, that they are in power in North Hempstead because they somehow deserve to be, but many of us know better. If the republicans had areas that voted for them knee-jerk 12 to 1 or 8 to 1, they would be in charge. But, alas, they do not. Republican voters are too smart and independent to vote that way (too bad).

You can always get my legislator Lisanne Altman to switch. She clearly would rather be with Peter Schmidt than the Democrats in the Nassau County Legislature.

Why would anyone want to be a county legislator anyway? Stick with North Hempstead Mr. Lieber. You can do more good there!
