View Full Version : Patronage in Huntington

The common worker in the Town of Huntington stands little chance of getting a promotion. Politically appointed Directors promote their sons to blue collar formen positions seniority is thrown out the window. Enviormental Protection on New York ave. is a perfect example. Forman who make in exess of $100,000 dollars a year one is a Directors son the others conservative party bigwigs. The elected officals look the other way as its jobs for endorsements. The Forman in question have less than 5 years service with the Town of Huntington. The union contract which Frank Petrone signed states that the senior person is to be given the opportunity for promotion. The director who made his 25 year old son a supervisor in enviormental protection is the worst offender he is in the process of harassing a forman with over 20 years of service in hart bus. The politically appointed Director who has abused his authority will be the downfall of the Town Board who appointed him and apparantly santions his actions.

that ain't nuttin

State Scheme to Select Judges Found to Violate Voter Rights

U.S. Court Determines Party Bosses Control Nominations
No Subscription Required

By Tom Perrotta
New York Law Journal
January 30, 2006

The system of electing Supreme Court justices in New York violates the rights of voters and judicial candidates and must be scrapped, a federal judge said Friday in a scathing ruling that could change forever the way judicial offices in this state are filled.

Eastern District Judge John Gleeson enjoined the New York State Board of Elections from using the unique — and likely unconstitutional — system of conventions and delegates that now determines which candidates for Supreme Court judgeships appear on election ballots.

Judge Gleeson said Supreme Court justices should be nominated by primary elections until the state Legislature enacts a new statutory scheme to replace New York Election Law §6-106.

"The plaintiffs have demonstrated convincingly that local major party leaders — not the voters or the delegates to the judicial nominating conventions — control who becomes a Supreme Court Justice and when," he wrote in , 04 CV 1129. "The highly unusual processes by which that extremely important office is filled perpetuate that control, and deprive the voters of any meaningful role. The result is an opaque, undemocratic selection procedure that violates the rights of the voters and the rights of candidates who lack the backing of the local party leaders."

The decision will be published Friday.

For the citizens' group and eight potential judicial candidates who challenged the election process as unfair and virtually impossible without the backing of key party leaders, Judge Gleeson's ruling was equivalent to a grand slam in the bottom of the ninth inning.

"The ruling is a victory for the voters of New York state and the judiciary," said attorney Jeremy Creelan of the Brennan Center for Justice, which represented Common Cause and the potential judicial candidates, including Margarita Lopez Torres, who is now one of two Surrogate judges in Brooklyn. "After more than 100 years of domination by party leaders, voters will finally have a meaningful say in the nomination process for Supreme Court candidates."

Arthur W. Greig, who represents the state Democratic Party, said the defendants would appeal and seek a stay of the injunction from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.

New York's century-old convention system is unique in the United States and only applies to Supreme Court justices. At conventions, candidates for the court are chosen by delegates.

The problem, according to the plaintiffs, is that those delegates, who represent various Assembly districts, are chosen by leaders of the state's Democratic and Republican political parties and simply do what those leaders ask. The plaintiffs argued that it is impossible to either unseat these delegates or lobby them for support.

Judge Gleeson agreed. Without the backing of political leaders, he said, it is "virtually impossible" for a challenger candidate to field a slate of supportive delegates from various districts sufficient to win a place on an election ballot.

The judge found that an insurgent candidate for Supreme Court in Brooklyn or Staten Island would need to gather 24,000 to 36,000 signatures drawn equally from 24 Assembly districts to have a chance at the nomination.

The judge also dismissed the idea that a candidate could lobby delegates and win their support. He cited the example of Judge Lopez Torres, a potential Supreme Court candidate in 2003 who repeatedly wrote to the Kings County Democratic Committee to learn the date of the convention, the name of delegates so she could lobby them, and whether she could speak at the convention.

Seven months later, the county executive, Jeffrey C. Feldman, wrote back to her, "mocking the request for a list of delegates to lobby," Judge Gleeson wrote. Mr. Feldman said that no such list existed "anywhere in the world" and added that Ms. Lopez Torres could not speak at the convention.

"Margarita Lopez Torres demonstrated in 2003 that indisputable qualifications for the job and immense popularity among the candidate's fellow party members are neither necessary nor sufficient to get the party's nomination," Judge Gleeson wrote. "Something different is required: the imprimatur of the party leadership."

The ruling comes nearly two years after the lawsuit was filed, partially in response to judicial scandals in Brooklyn that have resulted in one judge, Victor I. Barron, admitting to bribery, and another, Gerald Garson, being indicted (he has yet to go to trial). The Brooklyn District Attorney's Office has since won two convictions against Clarence Norman, the former Democratic Party leader and Brooklyn assemblyman, for election law violations, and continues to say that Mr. Norman could aid the office in further investigations of judicial corruption (Mr. Norman has denied this).

Party Leaders Control

While defendants in the suit have denied that party leaders, specifically Mr. Norman, controlled the sele- ction of Supreme Court candidates, Judge Gleeson dismissed those contentions in no uncertain terms.

"The record of financial contributions by candidates for Supreme Court Justice to political groups controlled by Norman has fostered not only the (accurate) perception that he, rather than the voters or delegates, controlled the selection of the justices, but the further perception that he used the wrong criteria in making his decisions."

He added: "Based on the substantial body of evidence before me, I conclude that the plaintiffs have made a compelling showing that the New York system is designed to freeze the political status quo, in which party leaders, rather than the voters, select the Justices of the Supreme Court. By preventing competition among candidates and deterring voter participation, the system is successful in fact at achieving that goal."

I say it should be manatory to drug test, Private companies do it, as a town employee and a tax payer I think that the public should be able to expect that the employees on a public payroll are drug free!

 New Stop and Shop Super Store going up on Jerich Tpk and Dix Hills Rd

The newspaper said it'll be Huntington's first. Hate to tell them we have at least two other super stop shop stores and not far away.

One is about 2 miles East of the Dix Hills Rd store, it's on Jerich Tpk in Elwood the other is on Rte 25A in Northport.

We have a Waldbaums and a Pathmark within 1/2 a mile of this new store both on Jericho Tpk.

The owner of the store said it will provide 150 new jobs. Not exactly the high wage jobs one would need to support him/herself on Long Island.

It'll attract low wage jobs for many people who live outside the town. Now they must have affordable housing which means they will have to find cheap rentals in the area to live.

Our town government and their army of elitists would have it no other way. But what the hey. At least Breslin's campaign donations have helped him to live in Muttontown.

Perhaps one of the reasons that the poster repeats these inane listings of surrogate court data that are several years old is because he was burned by some of those people. Mr. Thury is one who feels he was burned by some of those people. He feels people were out to have him ousted from the Conservative party leadership. The lawyer in question worked in a law office that Mr. Thury's Conservative opponent worked in. So Mr. Thury will blame people by guilt through association. But when he does lose his Conservative Party Leadership, it will be because he worked out corrupt deals with Frank Petrone and the Democrat Party. Because either knowing or should have known that his other Conservative party leaders were forging signatures on Conservative petitions and also using drugs as a Huntington Government employee on taxpayer time in a town vehicle.

Whoever is posting Bronwyn Black's judicial appointments should stop. As the last poster said it is simply useless noise at this point. I am not suggesting you do not have a valid curiosity into the propriety of these appointments, but you method of making your point has been going on ineffectively for months. I suspect BBK herself is reposting your post in order to accentuate its repetitiveness.

In a nutshell - nobody reads it. You have cried wolf too many times.

If you truly believe there is wrongdoing, here is my suggestion:

create a spreadsheet of every DISTINCT appointment BBK has gotten, each index #, the Judge, the date, the fee she got, and the size of the estate.

I think BBK would welcome a full and fair examination of her appointments.

I dont know which was funnier, that BBK post and reposts her appointments or that she would welcome a full and (get ready) FAIR (HO HO HAHA) examination into what appears to be special treatment from at least three suffolk judges ... Leis, Sgroi and Cziger or that there could be a fair examination of political paybacks to republican lawyers in the courts of Suffolk County by judges.

last poster hasn't been to many fundraisers or candidate vettings with the infamous BBK while she scowls around the room at anyone that "can tell me who can do me better than you can, BBK..."

Thury is a weasel, and if he is posting it, then it proves he really is insane, just as insane as appointing C Sullivan to his position. Sullivan was always crackhead, that fat little weasel Don McKay painted a funny picture in the LI'er of how good sullivan was that he was promoted, everyone knows he got booted out of the last place because he was a crack head skell then. Or maybe Sullivan promised not to bang McKay's wife if he lied, after all charlie has slept with everyone elses wife- Do they ever learn? Want to solve the problem, drug test all town employees.

Thury's obsession with anyone who tries to remove him from power is evident on this board.

Huntington Conservative Party Second in Command Arrested

Sullivan resigns from Huntington Town Job after Cocaine Arrest

"POLITICALLY MR. SULLIVAN WAS NOTED FOR HIS WORK TO DELIEVER THE CONSERVATIVE CROSS-ENDORSEMENT TO DEMOCRAT PARTY CANDIDATES"

No wonder he and others in the Huntington Conservative Party have been accused of forging over a hundred or more signatures on petitions

Will the DA do the right thing and investigate this fully to find out who possibly ordered Mr.Sullivan and others to do this dastardly deed ?

Looks like Ms. Black's law office does a lot of Surrogate's business. Wonder what percentage of her practice comes from this relationship?

The true obsession is the Republican leadership believing that the Conservative Party's failure to endorse Republicans is the reason for their many losses at the local level.

Conservatives and Democrats whine and whine but facts are facts.

as printed in the Observer:

"This time, John Poli an attorneys representing Republican candidates filed a lawsuit challenging designating petitions submitted by the Conservative Committee. In the lawsuit, Mr. Poli alleged that designating petitions submitted to the Suffolk County Board of Elections by Mr. Sullivan and his wife Sheila, and others contained forge signatures. The civil litigation was dismissed based on a technical insufficiency. Mr. Poli subsequently referred the forgery case to the Suffolk County District Attorney's office.

In a private investigation undertaken by Mr. Poli, 22 individuals have signed sworn statements attesting that the signatures on the Conservative petitions are forgeries. In addition, the private investigation allegedly uncovered another 122 forgeries for which sworn statements could not be attained for a variety of reasons.

In some cases, the individuals named on the petition no longer reside at the address. In other cases the individuals named on the petition own the home, but did not reside there. In other cases, a subject admits to signing one, but not both of the petition sheets circulated."

If the Suffolk County District Attorney does not follow through with a thorough investigation then the Federal Government will have to look into this undemocratic and corrupt electioneering fraud. The Conservatives in Huntington have been doing the bidding of the local Democrats for a long time now. Lets find out how deep this corruption really is !

I would love to see a town-wide drug test. I know of several employees in the Dept of General Services who would have a very, very difficult time passing ...
