2003 should be an interesting and a defining year for the Nassau County GOP. A local election with all 19 County Legislative Seats in play and a signficant number of judgeships. It appears that if the GOP is to make a comeback, the momentum from the 2002 election must carry over to the local elections in 2003. It is hoped that the leadership recognizes that "your grandfather's GOP" may not cut the mustard with the new generation. Here are some suggestions for success as an opposition: a) make alliances with key interests groups, such as business, law enforcement, insurance, and other communities that are harmed by overzealous Democratic regulators, b) carefully monitor local issues and recruit active civic leaders as candidates for office, rather than rely upon old blood, c) take even the "hopeless" races seriously, as today's candidate against an entrenched incumbent may be tomorrow's front runner, d) provide core service benefits that are not simply focused on placing people in government patronage jobs, but place qualified people into jobs in the private sector, e) genuinely embrace the philosophy that those in the public sector serve below the people, and not above them, f) never again allow candidates to run for office who do not understand the issues, tell the press they are running "as a favor" or who poorly reflect upon the image of the Republican Party, g) genuinely adopt a philosophy of a limited and less invasive government that adequately addresses and provides for human need, h) re-establish connections with your ideological core, particularly in the churches and with people who support self reliance, family values and strongly desire to hold the line on taxes. i) communicate the basic precepts of these core values to constituencies outside of the traditional Republican base, especially with reference to the African American, Hispanic, Asian, and other minority communities, j) directly or indirectly help as many people as possible flourish and achieve the American Dream, and k) get rid of the bums.
